KANATA NORTH NEWS Marianne Wilkinson Councillor, Kanata North Place useful, unwanted items on the curb Give

Away Weekend
Think twice before you throw out that coffee table or that painting youve had tucked away in your basement for years. Hold onto those items for another week for Give Away Weekend, a longstanding tradition in the City of Ottawa and in Kanata. As the saying goes, one persons trash is another persons treasure. On Saturday, June 5, and Sunday, June 6, this special weekend-long give away event will once again be held. Simply put any items you no longer need out onto at the curb with a free sign placed near them, and watch the items disappear into the hands of a new owner. This is a good way of diverting reusable items away from going into the landfill. Remember to respect each others property while treasure-hunting and ensure you bring any items that have not been collected kept indoors by evening. The number of Kanata residents who have kept this tradition alive by participating in this annual event impresses me. The former City of Kanata started a Give Away Day on the recommendation of Diana Pilsworth. It was cancelled by the new City of Ottawa shortly after amalgamation. In 2006, the Beaverbrook Community Association brought it back as a way to reduce garbage. I then put forward a motion at city council to make it a city-wide event and you now can find such treasures in the spring and fall (and sometimes in between!) in every part of Ottawa. Intelligent Communities Conference, NYC

At the time of writing this column, I was in New York City for the Intelligent Communities Conference. Ottawa, was the only Canadian city in the final seven. Please see next weeks column for more details.

Greenwoods Families for Families Campaign

What a great contribution from a Montessori school where the senior children are in kindergarten! Greenwoods Academy has raised more than $7,500 towards the purchase of HousAll System shelters for Haitians who were left homeless by the devastating earthquake. I applaud Sharleen McCorrister, school owner and director, for her and the childrens efforts to date. You are truly making a huge difference in not just our community, but in the world. You can help the children continue to donate by attending their garage and bake sale on June 5 from 9 a.m. until noon at 1065 Klondike Rd.

Senior Star
One of the events I look forward to every year is the annual Senior Star event put on by the Chartwell Kanata and Empress Kanata. Its always so entertaining to see what tunes seniors will play or sing, and the fun they have from this event. This year, I will have the pleasure of being the emcee for the event, which runs on June 15 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Kanata Seniors Centre. This is such an uplifting event for not only the audience, but for the contestants themselves as they vie for the ultimate chance to be crowned the Senior Star. Come out and enjoy some amazing talent. For information, please contact Bonnie Miller at 613-591-8939.

Tech Town Hall

In 2008, I held the first Town Hall Meeting for representatives of technology companies in the Kanata North Business Park at the Brookstreet Hotel. This year, the second Town Hall Meeting will take place, on June 17 at the Kanata Legion (70 Hines Rd.). The event is to provide information on City services to hi-tech businesses, as well as to recognize and support the important role technology businesses have in maintaining Ottawas economic health. The goal is to continue to have open lines of communication between the City of Ottawa and businesses in Kanata. There will be brief presentations on areas of interest to the business community as well as networking and table-discussions, aspects of the meeting that attendees valued in the past. For information, please call my office at 613-580-2474 or email [email protected].
