Week of September 10, 2012: Honor Before Honors
The Williams School works with each child to build an enduring foundation for academic, moral, and social success. Williams School students embody integrity, confidence, discipline, and a love of learning.
Honor before Honors
Last week I wrote you about routines. For our children, having a routine both here and at home is an important part of their successful development. Knowing what the expectations are for them and understanding how and when they meet those expectations increases success and lowers stress. It is equally important being keenly observant of our children while they establish their routines. Our teachers spend a considerable amount of effort talking to and watching students as they go through the day. They want to ensure there is a healthy balance in their individual routines. If an occasion should arise that things get out balance, the staff bring resources to support our children. Sometimes that support is the addition of academics resources. Other times it may be with the students academic advisories. Also, it involves communicating with the parent about our observations and responses. It is important that parents are actively part of this process. As your childs first and most important teacher, you are in a position to evaluate the routines your child establishes. If you perceive problems or activities are getting out of balance, we encourage you to let the school know about your concerns. Please feel comfortable contacting your childs teachers, advisory, counselor, the school nurse, or Head of School. We pledge to work with your child and you to find solutions to whatever the problem might be. I am looking forward to seeing everyone at the Family Picnic on Friday, September 14. This will be the culminating event of the Big/Little Week which is certain to create excitement around The Williams School. And speaking of excitement. There are a lot of good looking kids here today wearing bow ties.
Please join us... The Williams School 2012 Big/Little Reveal and Family Picnic Friday, September 14th
Your children will remain in their classrooms until 3:30pm. Snacks and our Big/Little Reveal will begin at 3:30pm on the playground. Bigs and Littles will remain together while playing supervised games until 5pm when our parents are welcome to join us. The faculty will be with your children until 5pm when they will be returned to the TWS playground just in time to meet you for the picnic. Our school-wide picnic, in front of our school, will begin at 5pm. All children must be picked up from the playground before beginning the picnic portion of our evening. There will be no afternoon bus service and no Extended Day on the day of the picnic. Parents must notify teachers if they will not be attending the picnic and a chaperone for their child must be in place. Please bring blankets and lawn chairs. Hello Fellow Williams School Parents, I hope this finds you and your family off to a great start of the school year! I want to take a moment to let you know about the Girls on the Run program we are offering at the Williams School this fall. Girls on the Run combines training for a 5k (3.1 miles) event with healthy living education. We use exercise, positive reinforcement, and encouraging role models to help girls discover the confidence they need in those critical pre-teen years and beyond. Through interactive activities such as running, playing games and discussing important issues, participants learn how to celebrate being their unique and real selves. Our hope is that every girl believes and can say, I belong just the way I am. The girls are encouraged to run, walk, skip, or hop. The goal is for them to move forward, just as in life! GOTR is a non-profit organization founded in 1996. There are now 191 Councils in 45 States and Canada. In 2011, over 108,881 girls were involved with the program nationwide. This fall, we will have 40 teams (approximately 600 girls) participating in the Hampton Roads area. The 10-week session will begin Tuesday, September 25th and will conclude with the Santa Shuffle 5K in Downtown Portsmouth for everyone on Saturday, December 15th. The group will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:15 4:30. The program will be offered to all girls in grades 3rd-5th. Online registration will be available starting September 1st and will be on a first come; first served basis. We can only accept 15 girls. If your daughter is interested in the program, she must attend both days of the session in order to participate. The link to register is: http://www.active.com/framed/event_detail.cfm?event_id=2040346 You can also go to Active.com and search GOTR South Hampton Roads and click on the Fall 2012 Registration link. Please do not wait to register. The group tends to fill up quickly. We are very excited about this program. It is about fun as much as it is about fitness and learning to make good choices. We invite you to visit the GOTR website at www.girlsontherun.org. Our local website is www.gotrshr.org. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions!
