KANATA NORTH NEWS Marianne Wilkinson Councillor, Kanata North EXPANDING THE BEAVERBROOK LIBRARY

The expansion and change of the Beaverbrook Library to turn it into the West District Library will be the major topic of discussion at my Ward Council meeting on Monday Feb. 28 in the Program Room of the Kanata Seniors Centre, 2500 Campeau Drive. Library representatives will provide a project overview and site placement options, following which, questions can be asked and the display boards reviewed. This part of the meeting will commence no later than 8 pm so that adequate time will be available for discussion. The first part of the meeting will have the report of our community policing officer, followed by my City Hall report. Key issues at City Hall are the budget discussion including a rationalization of the bus system to be more effective and costefficient. I will provide some preliminary information on possible changes to the bus system and receive your feedback on them. In March, I will be holding meetings concentrating on the bus arrangements prior to a final decision being made on April 20th. OC Transpo is considering buying more double-decker buses to serve the long express routes such as the 60 and 68. These buses have about 82 seats and less standing room so they would provide a more comfortable trip for commuters. Id appreciate your view on this at the Ward Council meeting or by email. Council will be having a final debate and approve the budget at a special Council Meeting starting on March 8th. Three days have been reserved for the budget and regular Council business. On March 1st you can attend the Mayors Spending Control Meeting at City Hall to make specific suggestions on reducing costs. You can also send me your comments and suggestions by email prior to the budget meeting.

CIVIC EVENTS FUNDING PROGRAM

Local not-for-profit organizations, such as volunteer-based community or recreation associations, are invited to apply for funding to provide one to two-day civic events with free admission that foster civic pride and bring the community together. Events are to be linked to a civic/statutory holiday in Ontario such as New Years Day, Family Day, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Civic Holiday, Labour Day, and Thanksgiving Day, and held in a specific geographic part of Ottawa, and provide a broad range of activities and family entertainment. Apply by March

23rd if you are holding such an event. The maximum grant is $3,000. For more information e-mail [email protected]

CAMPEAU SIDEWALKS
The province will be doing considerable work on highway 417 over the next few years. This involves repairs to the March-Eagleson Bridge, reducing it to 3 lanes while the work proceeds, closing ramps while they are being improved and widening the highway to the Highway 7 turn off. When the ramps are closed detours will increase traffic on Campeau Drive. I have met with staff and they have been able to designate sufficient funds to build the sidewalk on the south side of Campeau in advance of the road being widened (which is some years away). This will then provide a continuous sidewalk from Kanata Ave. to Colchester. The sidewalk will be well back from the existing road and will connect to existing sidewalks by the Royalton and across from the Mlacak Centre. Once I have a final design I will bring it to a Ward Council meeting for review.

WEATHER ISSUES
As warm spells begin, and particularly if rain also occurs, there is a growing danger from water filled streams and ditches and puddles on streets. Please keep your children away from water filled depressions and storm water ponds. Contact 311 if you have flooding on the roads or ditches overflowing.

COMING EVENTS
Feb. 28 7-9 pm, Ward Council, plans to expand the Beaverbrook Library and City budget, Program Room, Kanata Seniors Centre, 2500 Campeau.
