KANATA NORTH NEWS Marianne Wilkinson Councillor, Kanata North FIRE ON REMNOR

On Friday May 20th, after returning from the Kanata Theatre performance I received a message that a four alarm fire was underway on Remnor (in Kanata Estates). I immediately went to the site to ensure that residents were safe. It was an incredibly hot fire that might have spread from the units under construction, which were ablaze, to occupied homes across the street. That didnt happen because of the tremendous effort of Ottawa firefighters on the scene. The firefighters went door to door to ensure everyone was out of their homes in case fire spread and then continuously sprayed water onto the roofs, cars in laneways and sides of the homes to ensure that fire couldnt spread. Although the siding on one home melted and windows cracked, no fire spread to any home. Once the fire was under control they checked to ensure each nearby home was safe for people to return to their homes. I spoke with many of the residents who praised the work of the firefighters and commented on how professional and pleasant they were in dealing with a difficult situation. I have passed my thanks to the department for the fine way in which they dealt with this terrible fire. Eight homes under construction were destroyed or severely damaged, with the loss estimated at $2.5 million dollars. Arson is suspected. If you have any information about how this fire started please contact Ottawa Police.

GIVE AWAY WEEKEND

This weekend take the opportunity to give those items you no longer want to someone who does want them. Give Away Weekend is June 4 & 5. Just put those items at the curb with a sign FREE and watch them disappear. From left over renovation materials to clothes that no longer fit, these items are better reused than sent to the landfill which costs us tax dollars and creates the need for landfill expansions.

PARK AND RECREATION ISSUES

The Request for Proposals for the final design and building of the Kanata North Recreation Centre Complex is scheduled to be released this Friday, June 3rd with bids accepted until July 7th. Yes, it is finally coming! Completion is now scheduled for mid 2013.

An ATV has been seen using the park trails in Kanata. Residents are reminded that motorized vehicles of any type are not permitted on trails, paths or sidewalks as they create a severe danger to pedestrians and cyclists. Please report any incident to 311. Courtesy on paths also means that cyclists give way to pedestrians and alert them when coming from behind.

DOORS OPEN OTTAWA

This weekend is Doors Open Ottawa when 111 sites are open to the public and all are free. In our area consider visiting Pinheys Point, the Diefenbunker and St. Marys Anglican Church.
