FAITH AND WORKS
On this controversial issue of salvation, Catholics and some non-Catholics have conflicting beliefs. Catholics believe that salvation is attained through faith and good works, while some other Christians believe that one can be saved even by faith only (sola fide). St. James, in the Second Reading this weekend, affirms the Catholic stand on this matter of salvation. Faith without works is dead. The fruits of faith in the God of goodness should be visible in the believers life of goodness. Relationship with God cannot be purely personal or private. Faith demands obedience and it finds its fulfillment in obeying the commandments of God. The two greatest commandments of loving God and loving neighbor are inseparable. The gospel also supports St. James claim that in the time of judgment, God will judge each one according to his works (Mt. 25:31-46).

WHO DO YOU SAY THAT I AM?

These words from Jesus demand personal knowledge of Him and connection with Him. He did not only pose this question to His disciples, but to all will believe in Him through all generations. Who is Jesus to me personally is a question that we cannot avoid answering because the answer determines the kind of spiritual life we live. Jesus can be for some the greatest man who lived on earth, whose story can be read in the bible. For others, he is just one of the founders of great religions of the world. Still for many others, he is a prophet, a teacher, a healer or the sum of all these. But for those who love God, Jesus is not just a name or idea in history or religious books. He is alive and present in every moment, leading, guiding and nourishing his people. Those who love Jesus take his teachings seriously, follow his way of life religiously and embrace the Way of Jesus as the principle of their life and existence. His true disciples in every generation live and die for Him, for He is the origin, the reason and destiny of their life.
