Parish Priest: Revd Trevor Smith 9 Union Street Kilmore 3764 Ph: 5782 1155
First Reading: 1 Kings 2:10-12; 3:3-14 10Then David slept with his ancestors, and was buried in the city of David. 11The time that David reigned over Israel was forty years; he reigned for seven years in Hebron, and thirty-three years in Jerusalem. 12So Solomon sat on the throne of his father David; and his kingdom was firmly established. 3Solomon loved the Lord, walking in the statutes of his father David; only, he sacrificed and offered incense at the high places. 4The king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, for that was the principal high place; Solomon used to offer a thousand burnt-offerings on that altar. 5At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said, Ask what I should give you. 6And Solomon said, You have shown great and steadfast love to your servant my father David, because he walked before you in faithfulness, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart towards you; and you have kept for him this great and steadfast love, and have given him a son to sit on his throne today. 7And now, O Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David, although I am only a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in. 8And your servant is in the midst of the people whom you have chosen, a great people, so numerous they cannot be numbered or counted. 9Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, able to discern between good and evil; for who can govern this your great people? 10It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this. 11God said to him, Because you have asked this, and have not asked for yourself long life or riches, or for the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern what is right, 12I now do according to your word. Indeed I give you a wise and discerning mind; no one like you has been before you and no one like you shall arise after you. 13I give you also what you have not asked, both riches and honour all your life; no other king shall compare with you. 14If you will walk in my ways, keeping my statutes and my commandments, as your father David walked, then I will lengthen your life. Hear the word of the Lord: Thanks be to God Psalm 111 (said antiphonally) 1 O praise the Lord. I will praise the Lord with my whole heart; in the company of the upright and among the congregation. 2 The works of the Lord are great; And studied by all who take delight in them.
His deeds are majestic and glorious; and his righteousness stands for ever. 4 His marvellous acts have won him a name to be remembered; the Lord is gracious and merciful. 5 He gives food to those that fear him; he remembers his covenant forever. 6 He showed his people the power of his acts; in giving them the heritage of the heathen. 7 The works of his hands are faithful and just; And all his commandments are sure. 8 They stand firm for ever and ever; They are done in faithfulness and in truth. 9 He sent redemption to his people, he ordained his covenant for ever; Holy is his name and worthy to be feared. 10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and of good understanding are those that keep his commandments; His praise shall endure for ever.

Second Reading: Ephesians 5:11-31 11Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. 12For it is shameful even to mention what such people do secretly; 13but everything exposed by the light becomes visible, 14for everything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, Sleeper, awake! Rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you. 15Be careful then how you live, not as unwise people but as wise, 16making the most of the time, because the days are evil. 17So do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit, 19as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts, 20giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 21Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ. 22Wives, be subject to your husbands as you are to the Lord. 23For the husband is the head of the wife just as Christ is the head of the church, the body of which he is the Saviour. 24Just as the church is subject to Christ, so also wives ought to be, in everything, to their husbands. 25Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26in order to make her holy by cleansing her with the washing of water by the word, 27so as to present the church to himself in splendour, without a spot or wrinkle or anything of the kindyes,
so that she may be holy and without blemish. 28In the same way, husbands should love their wives as they do their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29For no one ever hates his own body, but he nourishes and tenderly cares for it, just as Christ does for the church, 30because we are members of his body. 31For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. Hear the word of the Lord: Thanks be to God The Gospel: John 6:51-58 The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John chapter six beginning at the fifty-first verse. Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ 51I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh. 52The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat? 53So Jesus said to them, Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; 55for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. 56Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. 57Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. 58This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live forever. For the Gospel of the Lord: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

They provide an opportunity to celebrate a simple Eucharist, hear the Scripture readings of the day, consider the lives of holy men and women of every age, and spend time in meditation/prayer as we listen to 12-14 minutes of Bach. We are few who gather on Wednesdays at Christ Church and Thursdays at St Matthews and I invite anyone and everyone to come along and spend some specific time apart from the world as a mid-week re-charge of your faith in the presence of the Holy Spirit. Parish Friday Night BBQs: All are welcome to these social gatherings. Their aim is twofold: first, is to enjoy each others company and perhaps, get to know each other a little better. And second, to build a sense of community within the parish, and to encourage a unified purpose as a parish community. The BBQs are BYO meat and drink with a salad or dessert to share. We will attempt to have these gatherings on the fourth Friday of each month. See the Parish diary for upcoming BBQ dates and venues. The Parish Friday night BBQ for August will be the last Friday of the month which happens to be the 5th Friday. The venue is the home of Caroline Burge, 6.30pm, BYO meat, drinks, and either a side dish or dessert to share. Please contact Caroline or Trevor for more details.
Invitation: Anglican parishioners are cordially invited to a farewell morning tea/lunch (depending on your definition) for Peter Rankin after the 10.30am Mass on Sunday 26 August 2012. We hope to see as many there as can make it. Regards, John Dixon. Prayer List: If you have put someone on our prayer list please review their needs so that we can remove their names if prayer is no longer sought. Please contact Trevor with any changes. Wanted: Now is a good time to start thinking of striking cuttings in readiness for the Fete Plant Stall in October. If anyone has any small or medium flower pots for cuttings they would be gratefully received. I need about 30 but if anyone else needs some then they can be shared around. Wardens please make sure there is container for donations in each centre. Saints Days this week: Mon 20th Bernard of Clairvaux, abbot & teacher (d. 1153); Fri 24th Bartholomew, apostle & martyr. Pew Reflections for the Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost: Jesus again tells us that he is the Living Bread. This bread is not like the manna that God gave to the Hebrews as they traipsed around in the wilderness, but rather bread which effects eternal life in the one who consumes it. Those who eat it will be raised up on the last day. Todays question: In what ways do I encourage fellow Christians to eat the Living Bread? Pray that people will be attracted to seek baptism and receive the Living Bread. Give thanks for the faithfulness of those who already believe that Jesus is the bread that came down from heaven
