When it is Tutoring will be available on Monday and Wednesday evenings in our ASL lab, 491, from 3 to 6 pm, beginning next week Monday September 17 and continuing until the end of the semester, the week of December 12. Tutoring will also be available on Tuesdays, from 10 to 1 pm, room to be confirmed. There will be NO tutoring during Intersession week, October 22 26. Who? ASL tutoring services will be provided by George Postlethwait, who is completing his graduate studies at York University this fall. George has a lot of experience teaching and tutoring ASL at different educational institutions such as York University and the University of Rochester among others. His MA thesis, Under the Medical Model: Exploring the Cultural and Linguistic Values of Deaf Adults in Ontario, Canada is currently under review by the thesis committee. What it is ASL tutors will assist you with ASL skill development, sign production and clarity and provide feedback on demonstrated work while practicing in the lab and may recommend resources and ideas for skill development. What it is not Tutors are not available to provide counselling services, engage in issues that are program and/or college oriented. Should you require services that are not within the tutors scope, please avail yourself of academic services as provided by the college. Your role Come prepared to utilize the tutors time wisely and appropriately. This entails having samples ready for review, having a specific goal/idea of focus for the evening, course materials, resources, and feedback forms from your Professors. If you have been given specific feedback, as they pertain to your skill

development, please share this with the tutors so that they may be able to better support you. How? In order to serve you more effectively, there will be a sign up time sheet posted every Friday morning on the lab door. Each person will be allotted 25 minutes if meeting on a 1:1 basis, however, if a small group of you wish to meet then the group will be allotted approximately 35 minutes. Please indicate on the time sheet whether your session is individual or group. In order to respect everyones time, please arrive and finish as per your designated time slot. Due to the number of students that may wish to use the service, please sign up for one time slot per student per week. On the day of the tutoring session, you may wish to check the sign up sheets one hour before the scheduled start time and if there are additional time slots available, you may sign up for a second time slot for that week. If you have any concerns or wish to provide suggestions or feedback, please email the program coordinator, Phyllis Beaton Vazquez at [email protected] Thank you.
