Winning entry for the EV300 Ideas Competition for Most Practical Overall Scheme - Summer 2010
Crco rccc nacr ccnriLoicns. sic an, rahic ccsin
Dana Porter square is a very important and central point within the
University of Waterloo, as many people walk through it everyday. An
important challenge is to maintain it as a connecting point of the many
buildings that surround it. Another challenge is to improve accessibility
and creating a community feeling.
What is the purpose of a civic square?
A public square should be designed with social interaction and recreation in
mind. It has the purpose of bringing people together, as it is the center of civic
activity and acts as a public symbol. Public squares also serve as a setting for
public buildings, as a place for ceremonial occasions, commerce and
entertainment and sets the social identity of the space.
Planning and design challenges
By applying various design principles and elements in order to enhance social interaction,
accessibility and the integration of its surroundings, all with a sense of aesthetics in mind.
How to overcome this challenges?

Site Plan
3D Model of Deck and Green Area
Site Context
Dana Porter Square is centrally located between Dana Porter Library, Modern Languages Building, Arts Lecture Hall, Tatham Centre, and the
Graduate House. The existing architectural, topographic, and pathway features include a sitting circle with a considerably large tree, a set of steps in
the center of the plaza, a very narrow accessibility ramp, a wood bark-covered green space with several mature trees, and various spaces with trees.
One constrain is the inability to replace the existing steps, and the dierent ground levels that result from this. The existing architectural and
landscape features represent an opportunity to preserve them while enhancing their natural and aesthetic value within the plaza, as contemporary
designs can be integrated with it.

Plan 110 - Final Assignment
Design Concept
The proposed Dana Porter Square design consists in creating a
focal point that can achieve multiple uses such as a spot for
conferences and concerts that uses the existing steps as sitting
space, a pergola for shading, a multiple-level deck with patio
tables, and increased and enhanced green spaces.
The concept addresses the design challenges by integrating the
existing buildings with the new elements, providing a completely
new accessibility ramp for bicycles and wheelchairs with a gentle
slope. Avoiding the addition of too many new architectural
elements in order to maintain the value of the square as a
connecting point in the campus. Instead, existing structures and
landscape features are enhanced by integrating modern design
elements into them.
The proposed design utilizes existing landscape features as
they provide an ideal setting to preserve and enhance nature
by creating designs with geometric inspiration and
expanding those green areas.
The tree-circle is an architectural element that can be perfectly
integrated as one side of the multi-purpose deck.
