Minnesota will remember former Gopher linebacker Gary Tinsley in numerous ways this year. The most visible will be the GT51 patch the team will wear on the front of their jerseys. The team also wears a GT51 sticker on the back of it helmets during practice. A large mural of Tinsley is visible upon entering Minnesotas locker room at its Gibson-Nagurski practice facility and there is a new team award named in Tinsleys honor as well, which will be given to the player who best exemplifies his underdog attitude. Tinsley was a senior at Minnesota last year and finished second on the team with 87 tackles. He passed away from an enlarged heart on April 6. Tinsley received his degree posthumously last May. In addition, one player will wear the No. 51 jersey each game to honor Tinsley.

bARKER LEADINg THE WAY
u Entering this season redshirt junior receiver A.J. Barker had once career catch and that came in 2010. Through three games, he leads the Gophers this year in catches (14), receiving yards (283), touchdowns (4). He is second on the team in scoring (24) and all-purpose yards (84.0). In the Big Ten he is fourth in receiving yards (70.8/game), tied for second among receivers in touchdowns (4) and tied for ninth in scoring among non-kickers (24). u Barker, who also returns punts, caught three touchdowns earlier this year in a 28-23 win against Western Michigan. ON THE ROAD
u Coach Kill has a knack for winning football games on the road. Saginaw Valley St. was a combined 18-8 away from home during the five years Kill was head coach. Emporia State was 2-3 on the road during both of Kills years at the school. At Southern Illinois, Kills squad lost its first 11 road games before going 21-10 away from home during the next five years. At Northern Illinois, the Huskies went 2-4 in each of Kills first two years at the school. In his final year, they were 5-2 on the road, which included a 34-23 win at Minnesota. The Gophers were 0-5 on the road last year, but are 1-0 away from home this season. u This weekend the Gophers are looking for their first Big Ten road win since they beat Illinois 38-34 on Nov. 13, 2010. WEARINg NO. 51
Each week a member of the Minnesota football team will wear No. 51 to honor former Minnesota linebacker Gary Tinsley, who passes away last April due to an enlarged heart. Tinsley was a senior on last years team and finished second on the team with 87 tackles. Tinsley also led Minnesota last year in sacks and tackles for a loss. Maroon and white Minnesota jerseys have each players name on the back of them. However, whoever wears the No. 51 jersey will not have their name on the uniform. Gold Gopher jerseys say Minnesota on the back. The combined score of two of Minnesotas wins this year has added up to 51 points (44-7 vs. UNH win and 28-23 vs. WMU). The last time that happened was a 27-24 win against Iowa in 2010. Below is a list of players who have worn Tinsleys No. 51 jersey this year. TCF bANK STADIUM
When the Gophers hosted the Air Force Academy on Sept. 12, 2009 it marked the first time since Nov. 21, 1981 that college football has been played on campus at Minnesota. Minnesotas 16-13 win over South Dakota State marked the final game of the inaugural season at TCF Bank Stadium. Minnesota put together a 4-3 record in its new home stadium in the inaugural season.
TCF Bank Stadium was the first Big Ten Stadium built in nearly 50 years. Beaver Stadium (Penn State) and Memorial Stadium (Indiana) were both built in 1960. At the time of its construction, TCF Bank Stadium was just the second new stadium built in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) and the first in a BCS conference since 1998. Akron has also recently christened a brand-new stadium. In May 2006, the Minnesota legislature made the stadium a reality, approving the $288.5 million facility. The stadium holds 50,805 fans and is an open-air facility. Construction began during the summer of 2007. TCF Bank Stadium Timeline May, 2006 - Legislature approves new stadium June, 2007 - Ground broken on TCF Bank Stadium January, 2008 - First steel rises from ground at stadium site April 7, 2008 - First brick laid at the stadium site Spring/Summer, 2009 - Scoreboards and lights in, exterior work finished Spring/Summer, 2009 - Scoreboards and lights in, exterior work finished May/June, 2009 - FieldTurf playing surface installed July, 2009 - University takes occupancy of TCF Bank Stadium Sept. 12, 2009 - First game at TCF Bank Stadium vs. Air Force.
The Golden Gopher football program saw a new tradition take shape in 2007, with the advent of the Gopher Victory Walk. Prior to each game, the entire Minnesota football team, led by the Minnesota Marching Band, will walk through the fans on Oak Street and head into TCF Bank Stadium. Each Gopher Victory Walk will begin two hours and 15 minutes prior to kickoff. The Minnesota Football program is encouraging fans to participate in the Gopher Victory Walk throughout the season, by lining the entire path from the bus to the stadium and cheering for the players as they arrive on game day.
gOpHER CHAMpIONSHIpS
Minnesota has won seven national championships and 18 Big Ten titles in the 128-year history of the Gopher football program. Minnesotas first national championship came in 1904 under the guidance of coach Henry L. Williams. The Gophers outscored their opponents 725-12 en route to a 13-0 record. The only team to score on Minnesota that year was Nebraska, as the Gophers downed the Huskers 16-12. Bernie Bierman would lead Minnesota to national titles in 1934, 1935, 1936, 1940 and 1941. The Gophers also won a national title in 1960 under Murray Warmath. Minnesota won its first-ever Big Ten title in 1900. The Gophers have a total of 18 Big Ten Championships in their history: 1900, 1903, 1904, 1906, 1909, 1910, 1911, 1915, 1927, 1933, 1934, 1935, 1937, 1938, 1940, 1941, 1960, 1967.
