Traces of Grace
Dear Fellow Parishioners; We have a new bishop! Bishop Kevin Vann has been named as the Fourth Bishop of Orange. His installation will take place in early December. I have met him a couple of times in this past week before he returned to his diocese of Fort Worth, Texas. He is an engaging man, of spiritual depth as well as an apparent willingness to roll up his sleeves to join this family of faith here in Orange. What follows are excerpts from his remarks last week at Marywood Center:

Bishop Vanns Comments for Press Conference Diocese of Orange, California 21 September 2012
I have learned over the years to try to place each day, every decision in the presence of the Word of God as it starts, to surround me and guide me, and all of us. Today is the feast day of St. Matthew, Apostle and evangelist. The first reading for todays feast day in the Churchs calendar is from St. Paul to the Ephesians when he says Brothers and Sisters: I, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to live in a manner worthy of the call you have received, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another through love, striving to preserve the preserve the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace: one Body and one Spirit, as you were also called to the one hope of your call; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. I cannot think of a better section of Sacred Scripture for me, for all of us today, to describe to what we are called as the Body of Christ. One of the many blessings I have learned from the Hispanic people is that the Church called by them as the Family of God. And, that, I believe with all my heart is who we are: this is what I have learned from my years in Fort Worth, and from what I have learned about all of you so far from Bishop Brown. You see, when Bishop or a priest is transferred from one parish to another or one Diocese to another, they leave one family behind and gain another. I have so much to be grateful to God for the people of the Diocese of Fort Worth, and north Texas and beyond. I will miss them very much. But, I promise that as we grow together in this exciting and dynamic time of the Diocese of Orange, I will love you and do my best to serve you, with the Lords help. That is one thing I learned in Fort Worth, and what I will live here. We are at an exciting time here in Orange: with the acquiring of what will be Christ Cathedral, we have the opportunity - with the gift of God that this is, as Bishop Brown has said - to continue to preach the Word of God here. We are also at the beginning of the year of Faith, a time and promise of new energy and celebration of Faith as we also celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council. I am truly blessed to be here with all of you now as the fourth Bishop of the Diocese, appointed by Pope Benedict. I thank Bishop Brown for his dedication, commitment and shepherding of all here in the Diocese, and promise my support and friendship for him in this new time in his life.

No one in our family ever wanted to see the killer of our brother and his wife put to death. We felt instinctively that vengeance wouldnt alleviate our grief. We wanted this murderer in prison so he could never hurt another person.Hatred doesnt heal. Every time the state kills a person, human society moves in the direction of its lowest, most base urges. We dont have to make that choice. Our lawmakers have the capacity to help us abolish the death penalty and along with it, the fantasy that it will make the pain go away.(Mary Bosco Van Valkenburg whose brother and sister-in-law were murdered) Join the Catholic Social Justice Ministry as we recognize that the dignity of the human person applies to both victims and offenders when it concerns the death penalty. Our next meeting is October 9, 2012, 7:00 PM, in the Church Meeting Room. Also, join us at a Death Penalty Panel Discussion on October 11, 2012, 7:00-9:00 PM, in the Church

Family, Faith & Prayer

If Your Pride Causes You To Sin Then Cut If Off "At various spiritual stages you can always acknowledge that you are like the Dead Sea of pride and, by your faith, you can call upon the abyss of God's mercy." S.C. Biela, Behold, I Stand at the Door and Knock (Ft. Collins, CO: IAMF, 2005) Join the Families of Nazareth formation group every Wednesday for 1 hour at 1:00 P.M. in the church cry room to help live out our call to holiness in the midst of the very real challenges of family life today.

FAMILIES OF NAZARETH

SICK AND HOMEBOUND MINISTRY

The sick and homebound ministry needs individuals to bring Holy Communion to those people who are confined to their homes and cant make it to church each week. It would involve approximately two hours of your time, you would attend a short training session on how to serve the homebound. If this sounds like a ministry you can help please call (949) 496-1307 X 2207 and leave your name and telephone number and someone will call you.

WOMEN OF WISDOM
Is committed to encouraging women of all ages to grow spiritually, emotionally, and in relationships. We focus on issues that encourage, renew, strengthen and unify women in their commitment to God, family, oneself, church, community, and others. We will meet every Wednesday in Knight Hall from 9:3011:30am .Spiritual Direction will be available. Shirley Filadelfia 496-1307 Your mind must be renewed by a spiritual revolution so you can put on a new self that has been created in Gods way, in the goodness and holiness of truth.(Eph. 4:24-25) We welcome all who would like to join us.

RESPECT FOR LIFE

The common outcry, which is justly made on behalf of human rights for example, the right to health, to home, to work, to family, to culture is false and illusory if the right to life, the most basic and fundamental right and condition for all other personal rights, is not defended with maximum determination. The human being is entitled to such rights, in every phase of development from conception until natural death; and in every condition, whether healthy or sick, whole or handicapped, rich or poor. Pope John Paul, Apostolic Exhortation Christifdeles Laici 38
