This document discusses evaluating alternative conceptual solutions and using decision matrices. It can be summarized as: [1] Engineers must evaluate multiple alternative solutions by analyzing how well each meets constraints and objectives. The best solution based on this evaluation will be used as the starting point for final design. [2] Decision matrices provide a structured way to evaluate solutions by specifying objectives, rating solutions against each objective, and selecting the highest scoring one. Objectives are prioritized, solutions are rated on their ability to meet each objective, and scores are calculated to identify the best solution. [3] Creating a decision matrix involves defining objectives, listing solutions, assigning weights to objectives, rating each solution, and calculating scores to select the

Recall: Engineering Design Process

Evaluating Alternative Conceptual Solutions

You now have many alternative solutions You need to figure out which one is best You do that by evaluating your solutions against your various constraints i.e. you do a feasibility analysis Solutions that remain are then evaluated against your key design objectives

Evaluating Alternative Conceptual Solutions cont

From your 5 options you need to pick the one that will be the starting point for your final design g It is an important decision Best decisions are informed and logical

Decision Matrices cont

Weights can drastically affect your matrix
Objectives have different RELATIVE importance Most important objective has the HIGHEST weight Some can have equal importance (ties) Can use Pair-wise Comparison Chart (section 10.4.1 in text) Put all objectives in a column and across the top Compare objectives along ROWS If row objective is more important than column 1 If row objective is less important than column 0 Add up scores for each row Highest score is most important objective Lowest score will be ZERO thats okay

Ratings
All objectives must be rated on the same scale Easier to use a simple rating scale (e.g. 1 5) Ratings must be based on research! Typically create a Objective Rating look-up table Measure(CDN$) Often take the largest 0 15,000 5 value, the divide into 15,001 30,000 4 even increments 30,001 45,000 3 NOT the same as 45,001 60,000 2 RANK
>60,000 1

All get a score of 1 so that no solution has a zero **unnecessary**

Design Assignment #4 and Research cont

Research (justification for ratings) should already be done as part of the alternative designs If not: (costs, properties, Many of questions (costs material properties etc) can be answered by consulting experts, technical literature, retailers and handbooks Reasonable inferences and extrapolations are also fair (based on similar situations) Be sure to reference your sources including any experts that you consulted!
