Shared Use

From the OUSD 2012 Facilities Master Plan: As Oakland Unied transitions into a Full Service Community District, each school will increasingly collaborate with community-based organizations, city services, and other partners. Supporting these community schools require some changes to facilities, including extended open hours, allowing access to certain rooms and buildings while the rest of a campus is secured, and new spaces designed with special attributes and amenities. These spaces include:

Case Studies: Unstructured Community Use


Schools as Community Hubs Pilot Project San Francisco, CA

The Schools as Community Hubs Pilot Project is a joint use partnership between the City and County of San Francisco and San Francisco Unied School District (SFUSD). The District allows the City to unlock outdoor playground areas for open, unsupervised use at twelve public schools throughout the city (one high school, one middle school, and ten elementary schools) on the weekends and selected school holidays during daylight hours. This project is meant to help increase the amount of recreational space available to the public. Physical and Programmatic Design Features The gates at participating schools have a second set of locks that City sta can lock and unlock. This double lock system ensures that either one of two dierent keys can be used to lock or unlock a gate, allowing the City access to project sites without needing the Districts master key. Case Studies: Co-located Public Programs


Sierra Vista Clubhouse Santa Clarita, CA Partnering together, the William S. Hart Union High School District and The Boys & Girls Club worked to construct and share a 27,000-square-foot facility that serves to support a growing student population. This joint use facility included an expansion to the Sierra Vista Junior High School campus and addition of a new Boys and Girls Club. The project was comprised of new classrooms and science labs, a new gymnasium and full-sized basketball court, arts and crafts center, computer labs, sports elds and track. The City of Glendale, California, and the Glendale Unied School District collaborated on a joint development project known as the Edison School/Pacic Park Project. The project provided a new elementary school, community center, library, and park expansion for residents in Glendale.
