Sample questions These questions are only typical of those asked in screening examinations for MS/PhD students in the Department of Chemical Engineering. They do not indicate the format or the contents of the examination. You may be tested on these and the concepts involved in answering these questions during the interview as well. Universal gas constant, R = 8.314J/molK.

1. The reaction N2 O4 2N O2 is to be carried out at 25 o C and 1 bar. Calculate the equilibrium conversion of N2 O4 under these conditions given the following data: The standard Gibbs free energies of formation of N2 O4 and 2N O2 at 25 o C are, respectively 97.9 and 51.31 kJ/mol. Standard refers to ideal gas state at 1 bar. Assume that the reaction mixture behaves like an ideal gas mixture. 2. The water gas shift reaction: CO(g) + H2 O CO2 (g) + H2 (g) is carried out at 1650 K and 1 bar. Assume ideal gas mixture. The standard Gibbs free energy change of the reaction is 15.8 kJ/mol. Calculate the fraction of steam reacted if the initial reaction mixture consists of 1 mole of CO and 2 moles of H2 O. Repeat for a stoichiometric mixture of CO and H 2 O. 3. The Antoinne equation relating saturation (vapour) pressure and temperature is given by: log10 P sat = A B , T +C
o

where P sat is the saturation pressure in mm Hg and T is the temperature in A, B and C for ethanol and methanol are listed in the following table.

C. The constants

Table 1: Antoinne constants A B C Boiling point (K) 8.08097 8.1122 1582.271 1592.864 239.726 226.184 337.7 351.4

Describe how you would calculate the bubble point and dew point at a given pressure. Describe how you would calculate the bubble point and dew point compositions given a temperature. Calculate the same at 72 o C. Qualitatively plot the T x y diagram. Assume ideal behaviour.

2 4. The rst order, isothermal, irreversible liquid phase reaction A B is to be carried out in a series of 2 CSTRs. Each CSTR has a volume of 2500 liters. The rate constant at the temperature of the reaction is 0.3 min 1 . Pure A enters at 50 mol/s and a concentration of 1 mol/liter. Find the conversion at the exit of the second reactor. If the reaction were to be carried out in 2 CSTRs connected in parallel, with 25 mol/s of A fed to each reactor, calculate the overall conversion. 5. The gas phase reaction A B + C is carried out in a closed batch reactor at 450 o C. Initially, pure A is kept in the reactor at 2 am. What is the total pressure in the vessel after 30 min. The rate constant for the reaction is 0.0212 min 1 . Assume ideal gas mixture. 6. A rst order process with gain 0.1 and time constant = 10 min is to be controlled with a PI controller. Draw the loop diagram, assuming all other transfer functions have unity gain. What is the ultimate controller gain for an integral time constant of 0.5 min? For a controller gain of 10 and an integral time constant of 0.5 min, determine whether the set-point response is overdamped or underdamped. 7. The open loop transfer function of a process is given by: Kp , a > 0, Kp > 0 sa Explain why the above process is unstable. Gp (s) = Show that the above process can be stabilized by a proportional controller. What is the minimum controller gain to be used? Assume all other transfer functions in the closed loop to be unity. 8. Alcohol is owing at the rate of 0.015m 3 /s in a smooth cylindrical pipe of diameter 10.23 cm and length 15 m. The density of alcohol is 789 kg/m 3 and its viscosity is 5.6 104 kgm1 s1 . Calculate the head loss in m (meter) and the power required (in Watt) to maintain the ow. 9. A 100 kmoles/hr of a mixture of benzene, toluene and xylene is fed into a distillation column. The mole fractions of benzene, toluene and xylene are 0.3, 0.45 and 0.25 respectively. The column is designed and operated such that 95 % of the xylene in the feed is recovered in the residue. The mole fraction of xylene in the residue is 0.99 and there is negligible benzene in the residue. Find the distillate and residue molar ow rates. Find the composition of the distillate. How valid is the assumption that there is negligible benzene in the residue. 10. Light lubricating oil (Cp = 2090Jkg 1 K 1 ) is cooled by allowing it to exchange heat with water (Cp = 4177Jkg 1 K 1 ) in a double pipe heat exchanger. The oil enters and leaves the exchanger at 375 K and 350 K respectively. Flow rate oil of oil is 0.5 kg/s. Cooling water is available at 280 K and a ow rate of 0.2 kg/s. Determine the heat transfer area for cocurrent and counter-current ow. The overall heat transfer coecient may be taken to be 250 W m2 K 1 .
