FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY By Elizabeth Liz Babine The Friends of the Librarys Big Book Sale, which was held on Saturday, November 3, 2012, took in $502.85. After this book sale, teachers from the area schools, as well as parents who home school, were invited to come to the library on Wednesday, November 7th and go through the books that did not sell and take, FREE, any books that they wanted for their students. This opportunity went through November 15th. The FOL felt that this book sale was a success since all books were buy-one and get-one for equal or lesser value FREE. There will be more book sales sponsored by the FOL in 2013, so be on the lookout. The Friends of the Library had a very successful year with their various fund raisers and community information forums. We want to thank all who made these successes possible, both the members of the FOL and those in the community. The FOL are looking forward for another productive year in 2013, and would appreciate your continued support. Well, 2012 is slowly coming to an end and a new year will begin. Please put on your 2013 calendar the FOL Annual Meeting Luncheon, which will be held on January 28, 2013, at noon. All of the FOL will be notified by mail of this coming event. Please bring a friend. I have enjoyed being your President for the past two years. I want to thank everyone for your support, work and ideas in order to make these last two years a success for the Friends of the Library. I look forward to continuing to work with this great worthwhile group which has helped make the Ozark-Dale County Public Library a leader in library services for Dale County. FOOD FOR FINES As the holiday season approaches, we want to remind our patrons that we have many less fortunate people in our community that will need a helping hand to make their holiday celebrations memorable. We will collect canned goods in lieu of fines until December 30th and will accept one canned item for every $4.00 in overdue fines. This will help us get our materials back, and it will help some family have a nicer holiday.
Eagle Stadium, an Alabama Landmark By Jocelyn Rayford In March 2012, Dale Countys Eagle Stadium was honored by being added to the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Historic Places. This stadium was built on 368 Martin Street, a residential district of Ozark. It has been a very important part of the Ozark community since its construction in 1946. In fact, Eagle Stadium is one of baseballs few remaining stadiums and playing fields that can be directly traced to the late 1940s. Minor league professional baseball was celebrated during the post World War II years. It is this history that makes Eagle stadium special in Alabama. The stadium was originally built on what was the 1920-1950 football field of Ozark High School. It was named the Buddy Williams Field to honor the man who owned and promoted minor league baseball in Ozark. After winning the National League pennant and the 1934 World Series, the St. Louis Cardinals played an exhibition game on Ozarks Buddy Williams Field. The following year, in 1935, Ozark built a stadium on this same field. Playing in this exhibition game held on Buddy Williams Field in Ozark, were Dizzy Dean, Joe Medwick, and Frankie Frisch. These were players accepted into Baseballs Hall of Fame. In 1946, Eagle Stadium replaced Marley Stadium on the Buddy Williams Field. This new stadium was built to host professional teams from the Alabama-Florida League. Eagle Stadium features a covered grandstand, albeit small. Sixty-six years after it was constructed, the area around this stadium is still predominantly residential. To those who use the stadium, and to those who appreciate its historic value and presence in our community, Eagle Stadium is a reminder of a time during the last century when small towns supported minor and hometown teams. These teams were considered a vital part of neighborhood life before the advent of television and the many major leagues.
