Chapter 1: Background Reflections. The Problem of the Earth

As 1 had indicated in the first Volume of The Qualities of Time series, my own exploration of some of the foundations of astrological theory came as a consequence of inner responses to certain life challenges. To recapitulate briefly, about twenty years ago 1 had an apparent heart problem which symptomatically manifested in the experience of intensive pain on the left side of my chest. Disinclined to seek medical advice at that time due to a youthful idealism inspired by a strongly held philosophical and metaphysical stance, I began to see the phemomena of the pain as a means - through becoming scientific about it - of gaining self knowledge. After perhaps six weeks or so I began to detect that the character of the pain seemed to vary - reflected in clearly discernible, rhythmic fluctuations. Shortly thereafter one of my teachers (I was attending an adult education school in England inspired by the work of Rudolf Steiner) mentioned a weekly cosmic rhythm related to the planets - that each 6 hourly period during the week had the character of a particular planetary sphere (see Volume 11 in this series for more about this). This concept met my sheerly empirical observations and seemed to characterize the pattern I had detected. Having recognized this I posed to myself the question: discerning that certain patterns of phenomena in my own experience have a relation to so-called macrocosmic phenomena what will I discover if I turn my attention to other cosmic phenomena - holding the open question whether I can see resonances of these within me. I think it is important for me to state here that to that time (about age 24) I had probably read only one book about 'astrology in my life - and that one solely a series of 12 meditations on the signs of the zodiac. So my field of observation was my own experience through self investigation (at first) then attending to others as well, in a phenomenological fashion. I should also mention that these experiences came 2-3 years into having worked intensively on my self through varied meditative exercises and perhaps six years into the process of intensive journal keeping, which was second nature to me before I began any explicit spiritual work, as well as before these methods became popularly practiced. As I have pointed out in The Qualities of Time. Vol. 1, 1 began to experience certain influences which led me to question the thoroughness of various astrological theories (which in years to come I studied). For example, I discovered that the Sun's motion through both the sidereal and tropical zodiacs definitely had a reflection within phenomena in the human being. That is to say, most simply stated, the human being participated in two different force fields simultaneously - one resonant to the Sun's movement through the fixed star zodiac, the other to the seasonal or tropical zodiac (more about this shortly). So here I was led to a serious question: why is it so few astrologers to date take both of these zodiacs seriously if a trained 'beginner's mind' experience through a clarified inner life clearly reveals their simultaneous operation. 7

Yet an even more baffling omission on the part of the astrological community was the virtual neglect of the Earth itself. For I began to experience some time into my observations that the Earth moving apparently opposite the Sun through both the tropical and sidereal zodiacs mediated forces from below up - as it were - into the human aura. If, for example, the Sun was moving through the sign of Libra and the constellation of Virgo, I could experience that forces entered into the human aura from below which set in motion more externally Aries related currents and more internally Pisces related characteristics. (This will be elaborated in detail in the following). As I experienced this reality day by day, year after year - now for almost twenty years and began to read more and more astrology books - initially with almost no mention of the Earth - more recently a growing question - I was left somewhat mystified by the one-sidedness of astrological work which seemed to disregard what to me was a palpably clear experience as significant, if so not more so, than the solar position itself. Of course for that increasing number of students of heliocentric astrology the Earth itself does have the significance although now often with the omission of the Sun. Yet my direct experience led me to feel that both were simultaneously operative -and each were operative through both the signs and constellations. Not long after my first few books appeared, in which I tried to share some of my findings, the work of a colleague and early teacher of mine in this field appeared.* In it he shared a very rich and comprehensive picture of the fruit of his own explorations into astrological questions. Interestingly, he emphasized the significance of the sidereal zodiac and cast serious doubts on the value and importance of the tropical zodiac. He further explored the importance of the heliocentric picture hence the Earth. What emerged from my study of this work and my reason for mentioning it, was the fact of major differences in the findings of my colleague (in certain areas) and my own research. This then led me to examine more of the tradition in regard to one of the areas of difference (the actual divisions of the constellation regions) through which I discovered even further varying views from different quarters. Although a reading of Dean's Recent Advances in Natal Astrology some years ago had led me to see the precarious state of astrological theory, it did not strike me so forcibly until my own work of twenty or so years was being contested! * cf. Robert Powell: Hermetic Astrology. Vol. 1 & 11. Available through Golden Stone Press, PO Box 974, Great Barrington, MA 01230 8

This led me to think about the dilemma of what is today called post-modemism in the intellectual world. Here we find the growing recognition of the so-called influence of the subject upon the objects of investigation; the relativism of systems of absolute 'truths' - even in the sphere of science which has so ardently sought these truths in the 'laws of nature' for the last four centuries or so. This is all to suggest that I thought perhaps 'reality' in terms of man's relation to the cosmos is far more complex than various inclusively tending systems understand - and that, further, there may be something erroneous in the readily held assumption that the experience of the ancients is necessarily translatable for our time. For just as we today postulate a concept of the evolution of consciousness, not solely an increasingly beleaguered concept of biological evolution would it not be fair to at least hypothesize that the human being's relation to the cosmic system may have also undergone an evolution - so a simple transplanting of astrological ideas from thousands of years ago to our time is to be questioned? Interestingly to me, Jim Lewis, the discoverer of the enormously innovative idea called Astro-Cartography argues that astro-cartography (the concept that if you move to a different location on the earth your 'birth chart' is altered, as will be your destiny, by virtue of your living in that particular area - most simply stated) is an idea 'whose time has come' - its discovery appearing about the same time when an individual human being has access to the entire globe, and many individuals in the course of their lives - either through actual change of residence or travelling - are living away from their birth places. In fact he suggests we are now, more and more, all citizens of the earth, not just our place of incarnation. So considering this thought I was led to wonder perhaps the human being's relation to the forces of the EARTH itself has changed in the course of history. And this is why, to date, it has been largely omitted; just as heliocentric astronomy and astrology was largely disregarded prior to Copernicus. Well this was one way I tried to understand why the astrological community omitted what to my own direct daily experience over many years was a transparent fact - the significance of the Earth's influence - at least in the latter part of the 20th century Now before I go into this question further, to make what I am discussing less abstract and more alive, I would like to introduce two articles I have written during the past few years. The first: THE FOUR SEASONS AND THE ARCHANGELS, What Ever Happened To The Earth appeared in the astrology magazine: Welcome to Planet Earth (I mention this because it clarifies the reference at the beginning of the article). As the reader will see I wrote this article to raise the question to the astrological community about the omission of the Earth. Although one of the intentions of the magazine is to encourage a dialogue between the writers -generally astrologers- and their colleagues or public - I'm sorry to say that with a readership of over 5,000 people I did not receive one comment or inquiry to my article! The question as to why this may be so - beyond my personal destiny circumstances - will have to be left open for now. I'd first like to look at this article, included here as a means of more full-bodiedly sharing some of the fruits of my exploration of the souls relation to the forces of the Earth itself during the course of the year.

Now I think any disinterested reader of this article may readily understand why I was further mystified to find that not only does the astrological community largely have a blind spot when it comes to the Earth - but when someone suggests that there may be a blind spot here - he has thus far been answered solely with a note of silence. What I hope will be clear from the fore-going article is the 'evidence' that Earth mediated forces must be operative to explain - at least assuming a certain correspondence with astrological paradigms - the rulership of these mythological (?) figures at their corresponding four seasons. The coordination of all four via the Earth's influence opposite the Sun is to me - at least tentatively - a little too clear a 'fit' to be simply coincidental. Yet here the earlier posed question can be raised: This may have been true in classical times, but if as you suggest there may have been an evolutionary development how can we be sure it is still true? In approaching this question I would like to share the second mentioned article: Santa Claus is Coming to Town: written for the Stella Natura 1992 Calendar - an anthroposophically inspired planting calendar giving indications as to how gardeners and farmers can begin to work again more consciously with cosmic influences particularly the Moon. Although the focus of this article is on the significance of both the tropical and sidereal zodiac I think its brief discussion of the earth - as well as viewing both zodiacs - will help clarify our further exploration. 12

I've included the preceding article to offer another argument for the 'evidence' of the influence of the Earth during the season of Christmas (moving through the sign of Cancer, constellation of Gemini), as well as an argument for the simultaneous influence of both the tropical (sign) and sidereal (constellations) zodiacs. I use the term 'evidence' simply to suggest that until one has a direct experiential participation in these influences they can - at least - be pointed towards through various 'signatures'. So let us assume that the reader, based simply on my suggestions, and the previous two examples, takes my indication as a serious working hypothesis. We can say that the Earth itself, as it moves through the signs and constellations, has a complementary influence to the Sun's motion through the signs and constellations. Starting with this premise I would like to again pick up my discussion, where I left off before these two articles. For years I consistently observed this daily influence of the Earth. Yet there were some aspects of this phenomena which presented unsolved riddles to me - and which consequently kept me from trying to draw together my impressions over many years into a coherent form. Let me look at some of these. In time I grew to ever more transparently experience that at any given moment the earth was affecting the human being's atmosphere or forces by virtue of its motion through the signs and constellations opposite the Sun.* Also I gradually discerned how these effects set in motion currents of force which appeared to have their shaping tendencies formed by virtue of planetary placements at the moment of birth (discussed in the second volume of the Qualities of Time series). Although I could discern these influences I remained confused as to the actual activity of the Earth position at the moment of birth as permanently fixed in the human being's field. Whereas for example, I discovered that when the Earth moved through the region of Leo - a Sun ruled region as I had discovered, confirming the generally held traditional view, forces coming from below up setting in motion the Sun related formative currents around the heart region. If, for example, the Sun was in Virgo at the moment of birth each time the Earth moved through a Leo related region, this Virgo Sun heart center would be set in motion sympathetically activating the solar plexus area, musculature and other Virgo related regions. Yet the question remained: where was the permanent impression of the Earth made within the human atmosphere by virtue of the Earth's position at the moment of birth? Now this riddle was exacerbated by other riddles.

*Due to the fact that I came to discover the constellations to be unequal in size, it does occur when the Sun may be moving through - for example the constellation of Taurus- the earth opposite will be for a time moving through the constellation of Libra. It also occurs that while the Sun may be in the 1st degree of the sign of Aries the earth may be moving through the 28th degree of the sign of Virgo. For a lengthier discussion of these dynamics see The Qualities of Time Volume I (Chapter on the Earth). 14

For example, at a certain point in my observations, I tried to focus in on the question of the daily motion of the planets through the houses. Unlike classical views where all the planets are transitting the circle of houses at any given moment (the foundation for the classical birthchart whatever house system might be used) I could only experientially access the motion of the ruling planetary movements through the houses. (see Volume II for discussion of this). Hence on Tuesday morning from 6AM - 12 Noon I could feelingly experience the activity of Mars in its present placement of the tropical zodiac moving through whatever respective three (approx.) houses it might transit during that 6 hourly period. This is an experience I have observed for twenty years. Now this is all well and good and I stand by the accuracy of it. Nevertheless I have also been able to observe over many years that all the planetary placements at the moment of birth impress themselves within what I have called the more external superphysical body of forces, and are ongoingly stimulated through present cosmic influences via the Sun, Earth, Moon or planetary movements (yet these only during their respective ruling periods). So as an empiricist I am confronted with two apparently contradictory spheres of phenomena. First, the influence of the planetary hours as succeeding each other - only one influence (along with Sun, Moon, Earth) being present at any given time. Second, the evidence that at any given cosmic moment all the planets are operative in their respective positions and relating to each other as reflected in their birth placement's influence on various force centers in the human field fixed throughout life. Now during the respective Sun ruled periods from Sunday morning (12-11-10 house), Mon. night (3,2, 1st house) , Wed. eve (6,5,4th houses), Fri. aft. (9,8,7th houses) I could only experience their character each week, I could not directly feel the activity of the Earth moving in the opposite houses. I never have directly felt this. Yet as in the above example I never have directly felt the simultaneous influence of all the planets moment to moment. Because I did not experience the motion of the Earth through the houses directly, nor of its obvious operation as an individualized force center in the human field, I went no further than characterizing its universal operation on everyman in the first Volume of my series, as well as this universal operation upon particular human beings' individualized force configuration by virtue of the moment of their births - independent of their particular Earth positions which empirically eluded me. Now this problem that the post-modem mind confronts of relativism, subjectivity of points of views, I have confronted as one individual in my own biography. The above example is one case. I could not reconcile my exclusive feeling experience of the significance of the ruling planetary spheres (in fact my first discovery based on systematic observations) and my observation of the evidence of the presence of all planetary placements impressed around the human being by virtue of the birth moment. Empirically I believe my observations are sound in both cases, yet epistemologically or conceptually I have not yet found the thought which would explain these experiences of mine - and their apparent contradictions. A further example is the following. In my early 20's due to certain spontaneous spiritual experiences that occurred I embarked instinctually on an intensive spiritual work with myself. In some ways a rapid progress led to heightened sensibilities. I could look to the eastern houses and feel the energies of the constellation ascending in the East. I could simply 15

look into the sky at the planets and feel the quality of radiation coming through those sectors of the sky tenanted by particular planets. Since then certain events have intervened which has altered my psycho-physical organization. For the last ten years I now have experienced the influence of the signs when they rise in the East; no longer the constellations. Also I now have an experience of the planets only during the ruling planetary hours, as they are moving in relation to the tropical zodiac. I can only now experience the influence of the Sun, Moon and Earth through the constellational zodiac directly - not the other planets. Now it seems unlikely to me that the cosmic structure or interaction with the human being has changed appreciably in the last twenty years. So I am left with the more reasonable proposition: that my own instruments for observation have changed giving me access to different aspects of what is a very complex web of life. These reflections lead me to the next step. About six months ago I had occasion to see a very unique course on Terrastrology - in which the author - John Lash - at a certain point, suggests that the position of the Earth itself is of profound significance for an individual. He suggests that the moral creative will of the individual is connected with the position of the Earth in constellation and sign at birth. This is suggested in the context of an evolutionary framework - which came to me through the study of the thought pictures of Rudolf Steiner the founder of Anthroposophy - and which provides a background for the above mentioned course. Putting it most simply, the argument is that our cosmic system is also engaged in evolution. By virtue of the incarnation of Christ - a being who it is argued is - as it were - the center of gravity for our system - the center of gravity has moved from the Sun - gradually to the Earth. The argument of Mr. Lash is that the cosmic system brought to birth the Earth which was sustained by the cosmos and the Sun. Now the Earth itself as child of the creative outpouring of the cosmic system - through the moral, creative will of the individual human being (Earth position) is destined to ray out this will substance into the cosmos. The Earth itself is on the way to becoming a Sun which will illumine from within out the cosmic system. Now, of course this is a concept of enormous proportions with implications in many areas of life. Yet anyone who looks at the way in which the Earth itself has been transformed (deformed many would argue) in the last few hundred years may well take seriously this hypothesis of the transference of the center of gravity into the human will. Now this bears also on the problem of my thinking about the Earth. I sometimes thought, following after my consideration of Steiner's articulation of this riddle, that the human being only slowly incarnates into the individualized will essence. Perhaps one could imagine this coming to greatest earthly, natural maturity around the age of 35. Because of this one is not as much in 'touch with this will essence until, at least, after age 21. This biographical development is mirrored in evolutionary historical development arguing that only gradually m evolutionary history are individuals taking hold or forming their will substance through which they will then transform the Earth as well as the planetary system within themselves. This was one way I posed to resolve this riddle of the omission of the Earth in the astrological community, as well as my blind spot to it. Perhaps the Earth is not significant from the moment of birth because the human being only gradually grows down into individualising 16

this substance - and in fact - in a person with a healthy evolutionary instinct, works upon this throughout their entire lifetime. This was one of the ways I tried to explain my lack of clear apprehension of individualized, unique will substances and efforts to shape it. The will related to the Earth position at birth can be simply seen as the person's creative. potentially moral impulse to shape and transform the earth itself. (I hope this will become clear in the following biographical studies). The cosmos is the mother ground for the birth of the Earth. The planetary placements are the mother ground for the birth of the individual Earth position and related living fields of influence. The Earth is born in us - ever more individualized - and through its radiation we remake the cosmic system within us - we reunite creatively with it - for union in the physical world brings forth creative issue. We go through the pain of separation to gain individualized self consciousness and volition. Then we can choose to bring our individualized condition into relation to that cosmic matrix out of which we were born and which, growing old, needs the support of the Earth centered radiating forces through our purified moral, creative wills. Or so my thinking went. This is a gradual historical process and a gradual biographical process. When meeting this argument recently of the significance of the Earth at the moment of birth, I once again turned my attention to this problem. I wrote out systematically about 350 earth positions in relation to constellations-signs-house, and cusps of houses. 300 of them came from my personal counselling work which is largely related to friends - many of whom I have known for years. The other 50 were taken from various historical personalities - some of whose lives I had intensively studied and written about in my third Volume. I wrote out the data and began inwardly in a meditative sense - 'to plunge into the will substance' of these various individuals. After 30 or so I became more and more convinced of the revealing significance of the extended Earth signature at the moment of birth due to (sign, constellation, house and cusp of house). Of the 350 cases I looked at, 20 were enigmatic to me - the others seemed to eloquently testify to the significance of the conception of Mr. Lash. Now having spent years meditatively exploring different aspects of man's relation to the cosmos, I am well aware of the problem of being unduly guided by the dearly held theory I am trying to demonstrate. I repeatedly asked myself. are you fooling yourself looking for this substantiation? If it is so transparent and has been in front of your nose for so many years why have you missed it? Why can't you see it in day to day life? Is it as clearly in evidence at every age or more so after the age of 21-35, etc.? These questions remain! Nevertheless, I felt the exploration was ripe enough to share the results of my considerations with others, so that they could explore these questions as well. As I have made clear throughout the Qualities of Time series what I am offering is being done hi a fraternal non-dogmatic spirit as suggestions for other's investigations. I have done my best to test things as thoroughly as possible before offering what I have discovered and suggesting they may be fruitfully investigated by others as well. 17

Chapter ll: Practical Discussion. Theoretical Framework

In this chapter I would like to look at a more detailed picture of the varied archetypal Earth positions. To paraphrase the words of John Lash this Earth position is indicative of 'one's purposeful quality of love; the directing power of the ego'. Through it one finds a relation to the question of self-fulfillment and that difficult area of 'life purpose'. One can also see it as related to the ability to act in perspective of one's ultimate purpose;life vision or destiny. Through its operation one can achieve (ongoingly) one's 'moral-creative life offering in practical down to earth ways'. We find the stamp of the 'moral individuality through it'. Now these are some leading thoughts offered by Mr. Lash. I offer them simply as directional pointers. I hope their aptness may become clearer in looking at the individual examples later in this book. Charts On the following pages are pictured a series of charts drawn from my other books. I will simply explain the foundation for them. Readers interested in a more comprehensive picture are referred to these other books.* Table 1 (page 22) gives a picture for the Earth's motion through the 36 regions of the tropical zodiac. The dates given are those for the Sun's movement through the course of the year. Hence from September 19th to 29th the tropical Earth is moving through the region of Aries; between September 29 and October 9th, the tropical Earth is moving through the region of Aries-Leo. So, for example, someone born between the period of September 19th and September 29th would have a tropical Earth archetype in the Aries sector, someone born between September 29th and October 9th a tropical Earth position in the Leo sector of Aries which should be read as Leo in character.

*See especially The Qualities of Time I-IV available from Paul Platt, Star Cross Press, POB 846, Sheffield, MA 01257. The reader unfamiliar with my other work is referred to it for an account of my systematic exploration of the reality of the decanate regions. Further, whenever there is a composite entry such as Aries-Leo the exclusive emphasis is on the second entry - as in this case, Leo. See my other books for an explanation of this. 19

Table 11 (page 23) complements Table 1. Here we see a table indicating the motion of the Earth through the 36 decanate regions of the tropical zodiac, with corresponding Sun dates, plus degrees of the Sun on those dates and degrees of Earth opposite - at that time as well. So we find that from March 24-April 3 the Earth moves through the Libra (0*-9*Libra) region tropically. This corresponds to the Sun's motion between 4-13* Aries in that zodiac. From this the reader can see that unlike in heliocentric considerations the spiritual influence of the Earth is not exactly opposite, but varies within about 4* fluctuation. The way in which I determined the mathematical correlation to the living experience is through discovering that by adding 12* to the sidereal time for any given solar day I would get the influence of the Earth position opposite. So, for example we find that March 24, 1992 at 7 Am EST gives us a sidereal time of 0 8 51. If we add 12* to this we find a sidereal time of 12 8 51. Turning to 12* 8' 51' for 1992 we discover that this falls sometime on September 22 when the Sun is passing at about 0* Libra. Precisely why this works out in this fashion is a riddle still to me though years of participatory observation has convinced me that this theory truly names this phenomena. In Table 111 (page 24) we find the picture of the Earth moving through various constellational sectors, and the corresponding dates during which it moves through these sectors. (See next entry for explanation of the 36). This table pictures the Earth's motion through the constellational zodiac. Once again we see the suggestions that the constellations though unequal in size are trisected - giving us a sidereal region of 36 force sectors as well. So here we find - now for constellations - the regions through which the Earth is moving. As an example - in the first entry - Libra - we find the corresponding dates in the Sun year when this is occurring are (April 16-28) - the corresponding degrees of the Sun (26 Aries-8 Taurus), (12* days appx.) - and the corresponding degrees of the Earth (22 Libra - 4 Scorpio 12* days). This is essentially the same picture as the previous one except we are now considering the Earth's movement through the constellations, adding corresponding tropical dates for reference. In Table IV (pages 25-26-27) we have a composite of the previous charts which should give the reader a handier reference to look up influences at a glance. The various archetypal regions are numbered 1-72 (although there are 72 variations in the year there are only 42 different archetypal combinations) with the Earth's motion through the sign/constellation at particular times and dates (start-end) noted. Taking the first example we find that the earth is moving through the sign of Virgo-Taurus - read Taurus as significant) and the constellation of Virgo from March 16-March 24. That is to say that someone born during this period would have creative will forces working in a deeper layer through Virgo and a more outer layer through Virgo-Taurus. Virgo inside and Taurus outside one could say. If people are born on transitional dates calculations need to be made for particular years as there are slight variations year to year.*

*See Appendix 1 for example on how to calculate this. 20

Next Table V (pages 28-29) indicates the motion of the Earth through corresponding tropical regions, the days during the year when this is occurring; the planetary rulers accentuated by virtue of this motion, the related force centre or chakras, the corresponding sense and way of looking at the world. So, for example, during September 19-29 the Earth moves through the sign of Aries, its planetary ruler is Mars. This rulership can be experienced as setting in motion the spiritual currents related to the throat centre; these currents in turn have to do with the sense for the word or speech of others; and a way of looking at the world we can characterize as 'philosophic idealism.'* What is contained in Table V can easily be transposed for the Earth's motion through the constellations. To find the corresponding dates look to charts II and III. Checking chart Il we find that the earth moves through the constellation of Aries from October 11 to October 22. During this time one can find in the more inward will-earth related nature of man a stimulation of the Mars forces focalized at the throat, accompanied by an awakening of the 'word' sense as well as the world view of 'idealism'. This in principle would hold for all the subsequent regions. Generally the earth's motion through the constellation occurs about three weeks after its movement through the signs. For exact dates and effects refer to Tables II-III (dates) and simple transpose effects from Table V to appropriate dates. So what we find from the preceding charts is that if we take into account both signs and constellations we have 72 variations of archetypes during the course of the year (though 42 distinctly different combinations). This is further complicated by the fact that any of these combinations of archetypes can fall into one of 12 houses - having characters related to the 12 archetypal zodiacal sectors; hence 1st house - Aries; second house, Taurus, etc. So if we multiply the 12 x 42 possibilities we have for the 3 individual Earth archetypes for any person (sign, constellation, house) we find 504 variations. The final complication is to consider the influence of the cusp of the particular house m which the Earth falls at birth. Although my impression is that decans need also to be taken into account for house cusps we still have fundamentally only 12 archetypal possibilities, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, etc.- as predominant influences. This gives us potentially four individual influences for a particular Earth position or 504 x 12 giving us a total of 6,048 possible individual variations! Well with this plethora of possible variations it is certainly not simple to demonstrate the unique characteristics of various individuals Earth positions! Nevertheless I simply hope to give indications to be examined in the following examples and demonstrate a sufficient plausibility to this hypothesis to encourage others to explore it for themselves.** *See Appendix H for brief chamcterizations of these 12 senses, 12 ways of looking at the world, and 12 moral-psychological characteristics. **In relation to the Earth positions and the cusps of houses - thus far my own research has led me to feel that the Placidus framework seems closest to living reality. This is not for me a final conviction rather a working hypothesis - borne out thus far through my observations.

Chapter III: Earth Archetype Examples - Personal

In this section I would like to look first at various illustrative examples from the circle of my personal friends and people whose charts 1 have considered and lives 1 have participated within for some time. Given that the Earth position is not infrequently composed of 4 different entries - or at least 3 - 1/3 or 1/4 of the entire zodiac - it is obvious that gaining complete conviction of the reality of the Earth's significance will demand for each student to explore themselves, as well as personal or historical individuals well known to them. I will start with my personal circle and then look at some historical examples. In doing this I am suggesting that the Earth's position in the constellations indicates a more deep-rooted, interior will., while its relation to the signs indicates more the life energy around this will. The house and cusp of the house might be understood as life contexts in which these constellational and sign impulses work These clear distinctions between the relative significance of these four factors will be left ambiguous for the moment. I'll leave it for each reader to work on this question for him/herself. The following chart (page 32) gives simple indications which can orient us in the context of my discussion of the revealing character of respective life-will gestures of different individuals in relation to various archetypes. These indications are fleshed out in the appendices,* as well as in my previous books. In the following examples I will leave out - for the sake of simplicity - separate lists for cusps but will include cusps in looking at composite entries for a number of people. Also in respect for the privacy of my personal circle of friends I will simply put initials for names.

* see Appendix II: Virtues, senses, world-views, etc.

This completes a breakdown of examples from my personal experience of various Earth archetypes reflected in certain life gestures by different individuals. Of course, it is certainly true that I have selected those that are clearly illustrative of the respective archetypes. Since these people are all known to me personally and only a few to readers of this book, these illustrations will at best have limited value. Nevertheless before I go on to draw examples from more well known historical personalities I would like to simply take a sampling of the above individuals, looking at the flowing together of their usually three or four Earth archetypes. If this does not seem helpful to the reader he/she certainly can omit reading it and move on to the examples drawn from the lives of other historical personalities. My most optimistic hope would be that through my sharing all of these examples, readers trying to explore various archetypal Earth creative will gestures in those individuals known to them personally, may be helped by reviewing some of the range of expressions in the various archetypes 1 have shared in the preceding. Well I leave the use of this material to each reader's discretion. Ultimately, 1 think the clear apprehension of this archetype in others, has to do with the refinement and sympathetic attunement of each of us toward the other person. 49

Involved in controversies over publishing (Scorpio). Engaged in publishing (Scorpio). Member of extended group of friends (Libra). Probably some of the most interesting phenomena in the preceding examples are reflected in a series of individuals who have carried on through three-four generations similar impulses and who reveal that in their will-earth positions they share a similar archetype. Rudolf Steiner has an Aries cusp for his earth -emphasizing the 'word'. Herbert Witzenmann - one of his most significant students - had an Aries sign placement at birth. He inaugurated a battle over the defense of the purity of Rudolf Steiner's 'words' or written legacy. WJ, a personal student of Herbert Witzenmann, as well as Rudolf Steiner's work, picked up the battle to protect the 'word' of Rudolf Steiner. We find his earth in the constellation of Aries. BH, one of the letter writing lawyers in W's circle, also battling what she believes to be the lack of protection of Rudolf Steiner's 'words' has the earth in the constellation of Aries at birth. Here we see a remarkable signature through four generations of individuals individuating their relation to their respective word stream wills, though considering and taking a stand in relation to a particular struggle. Complementing this signature of a common archetypal will gesture through generations, is a common gesture amongst contemporaries. JM, the founder of a school to train gymnastic teachers could be seen somewhat as a master of his own activity. The common theme here is in the Sag. forces which have such an intimate relation to games and sports. JB, AM, M JR and DA - all of whom share this Sag. earth archetype, have all been drawn to do the training with JM. Perhaps 1 could suggest that JM's individualizing of his Sag. will forces, his mastery of them, are partly the inspiration behind others with similar will potentials being drawn to him to more fully master their own. Now 1 think the implications of these two examples should be clear. Certainly in an every day sense it is completely reasonable that a person with an inclination to learn how to draw would want to study with someone who has already mastered drawing. The previous examples are simply suggesting what may lie behind these impulses, when viewed from a cosmic perspective. I'll leave it to the interested reader to follow up the implications of these examples through considering such patterns amongst groups of people they may wish to study - who may be working in similiar professions or the like. In the next chapter 1 will look at historical examples. 63

These previous historical examples can be supplemented by any of those personalities known and of interest to the reader. Surely the more intimately and thoroughly any of these people are known to one, the more readily their particular will of Earth expression will either be seen as reflected in the various Earth archetypes or felt to be not confirmed. Looking at extended groups of individuals who have had something to do with each other, sharing similiar archetypes - as for example Rudolf Steiner, Marie Steiner and Albert Steffen (All sharing a Capricorn archetype), can 1 think lead to further fruitful study. It certainly struck me as interesting and potentially quite revealing to find that JM Martin Luther King and Mohandes Gandhi all shared a common archetype -that of Scorpio. One dramatic aspect of each of their destinies held in common was the fact that each of these 'spokesmen' for progressive vision in the world were 'assassinated'. Further one could imagine that how particular streams are carried forward by certain individuals working out of and through particular archetypal forces would also be a fruitful study. These are just a few of a number of possibilities of how a contemplative consideration of the data above might further clarify some of the riddles of the significance of the Earth itself. I'll leave the elaboration of these further explorations to the interest of readers. 93

Chapter VII Aspects to the Earth

In this chapter 1 would like to briefly go into the question of planets making aspects to the Earth position at birth. If we hypothesise that the Earth placement at birth has to do with the creative, human wilI, then planetary aspects to this position would logically influence the character, expression or disposition of this will. What is difficult in looking at this is that when these planets affect the Earth - as for example, when the Earth is opposite Neptune, the Sun is at that time conjunct Neptune. When the Earth may be in a 90* angle to Neptune, it is also making a 90* angle to the Sun. So one needs to distinguish the effect this influence of the planet has upon the Sun nature from that of the Earth nature. Perhaps we could tentatively say that the Sun has more to do with the thinking nature and the Earth has more to do with the willing nature. What 1 would like to introduce in the following pages is simply some charts indicating aspects between a number of the planets and the earth at birth as is found in the examples of a number of the historical individuals we have thus far explored. 1 will assume that any reader who is still with me at this juncture in what is not the most simple investigation, will have a sufficient sense of the significance of the various planets, to not need my going over - at least - their commonly held characteristics. 1 am not suggesting anything conclusive in that 1 don't think 1 have considered enough examples to responsibly draw any conclusions, but by placing these examples together 1 believe certain insight can be gained through considering the characters of the variously named individuals in the context of the question of a significant planetary influence working upon or with their Sun and Earth natures. It does not seem to make sense to introduce examples from my personal work - in that without the readers having a greater knowledge of these individuals, I doubt anything fruitful could come from considering them in this context. Within the scope of this book 1 won't distinguish aspects, as, for example, Earth conjunct Pluto or Earth square Pluto or Earth opposite Pluto in that the overall intention of this book is to introduce the fundamental question of the Earth - not to draw any conclusions about it. More exhaustive work will need to be done certainly at least by me - before 1 could say anything about finer distinctions. So in the following, in the largest proportion of cases the aspects considered are either conjunctions, squares or oppositions between the respective planet and the Earth position at birth. Pluto in relation to Earth Philip Berrigan, Martin Luther King, Lech Walesa, Angela Davis, Anita Bryant, Baba Ram Dass, Elizabeth Kubler Ross, Jimmy Carter. 95

Neptune in relation to Earth Lech Walesa, Angela Davis, Sigmund Freud, Mozart, Harry Truman, Elizabeth Taylor, Albert Schwieitzer, Carl Jung, Werner Erhardt, Shirley McLaine, Elvis Presley, Mick Jagger, Janis Joplin, Pablo Casals, Ted Kennedy, George Patton, Richard Nixon, George Bush. Uranus in relation to Earth Timothy Leary, Baba Ram Dass, Raineesh, Shirley McLaine, Gertrude Stein, Margaret Mead, Lech Walesa, Angela Davis, Sigmund Freud, Krishnamuriti, Pope John Paul, Gaugin, George Bush, Eisenhower. Saturn in relation to Earth Richard Burton, Yogananda, Ram Dass, Mozart, USA, Werner Erhardt, Karl Mary, Elizabeth Kubler Ross, Rudolf Steiner, Albert Steffen, Ita Wegman, Guenther Wachsmuth, (the last four interestingly were all leading members of the first Anthroposophical Society Vorstand founded and suggested appointments of Rudolf Steiner). Jupiter in relation to Earth Yogananda, Krishnamurti, Mick Jagger, Isadora Duncan, BaIzac, D.H. Lawrence, Hemingway, Ronald Reagan. Mars in relation to Earth Dorothy Day, L.B. Johnson, Jesse Jackson, Shirley McClaine, Renoir, Alan Watts. Moon in relation to Earth Pope John Paul, Gaugin, Ted Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, Pablo Casals, Karl Marx, Georgia 0 Keefe. I'll simply leave the above lists to the consideration of each individual reader. 96

Chapter VIII Concluding Remarks

The preceding examples of Earth positions are offered to the reader as indicators which can be contemplated. The question of why the Earth itself has only more recently been taken seriously by astrologers may have a relation to the question of the overall evolution of consciousness, as well as the developmental phases of our cosmic system. If one considers the significance of the human will when looking at the question so often accompanying astrological considerations: that of freedom and determinism, one can readily understand the helpfulness that clarification of the astrological indicator for the human will - in this case the Earth position - could have for further expanding the effort made to explain aspects of human nature and destiny in relation to the cosmos. From a certain point of view one wonders whether this astrological 'gaia hypothesis' when omitted, leaves us looking at the human being somewhat without his/her feet on the ground. It is interesting to note -as Jim Lewis has pointed out - that at the same time in the history when many souls live and travel to varied parts of the globe - an understanding of the laws that lie behind his discovery of astrocartography have also come to light. Perhaps there is some concomitant significance to the rediscovery of heliocentric astrology in this century, as well as a growing interest in the significance of the earth itself. The increasing significance of the human will for the future of the earth and man is graphically obvious if we imagine the condition of the world 300 years ago - and its present condition - largely the fruit of the creative will power of human beings. (also of course machines another large question in itself). Now what has been suggested in the previous pages is simply one aspect of what 1 believe is a far more complex question: the significance of the Earth placement at birth, as well as ongoingly through the course of the year. Another contemporary investigator into some of these questions, Robert Powell, has also explored the question of the significance of what is known in certain esoteric traditions, of the 'interior of the earth.' The basic argument is that just as the earth can be imagined as surrounded by the various planetary spheres, Moon, Venus, Mercury, Sun, Mars, etc. so the interior of the earth itself - has a number of shells within each other each one having a kind of relationship with one of the planetary spheres. (For readers interested in some of these very interesting studies they can be found in Shoreline, Volume IV, available through Golden Stone Press, PO Box 974, Great Barrington , MA 01230). It is clear that one of the problems with the previous study is the tendency to use the data or phenomena to justify one's theory. Certainly this is always a struggle. Oftentimes in reviewing my impressions of the Earth's relation to individual will's 1 have asked myself whether 1 am guilty of this error. The simple preceding argument and introduction of data for the readers own contemplation is not meant to argue an open and shut case - rather a fraternal sharing with other soul's concerned with similar questions. To the best of my ability and knowledge 1 have tried to overcome the tendency to find in the data and phenomena only that for which I was seeking. It is clear I imagine, to those investigators of cosmic correlations with human nature that in plunging directly into the living forces of other beings it is not easy to so readily determine what forces are causally related to what apparent effects. Certainly exploring a factor (the earth) which in some cases may have four different archetypal 97

influences (1/3 of the entire range of 12) it is not always simple to be certain that the uncovering of one or more of these four is obviously related to the Earth Position itself - and not some other factor in the overall dynamic, living organisation. 1 think here, as in the case of other disciplines, repeated exercise and practical use of those faculties of discrimination is necessary to overcome carelessness. This is said not to argue the preceding may be without error, nor to argue the impossibility of utter precision in this exploration, rather simply to acknowledge this author's struggle with this challenge which he hopes may encourage other reader's who - in their own investigation of these questions - find similar challenges before them. CONCLUDING REMARKS In concluding this study, which in a certain sense is simply an introduction to this problem of the Earth, 1 would like to say a few final words. It is clear that we have concerned ourselves solely with the question of the perception of the operation of the Earth in the present time as it seems to be significant in the life of the individual human being. How the Earth itself works day by day through the course of the year -in a more general sense - has been one of the concerns of the first two Volumes of this series. The question of the soul's changing relation to the sun and the earth through the course of cosmic evolution , as perhaps reflected in biographical development - has only been hinted at as ways in which 1 have started to think about explaining some of the apparent contradictions 1 had pointed out in the first chapter. It is clearly beyond the scope of this study to explore these questions here any further. For those readers concerned with these questions, 1 would like to acknowledge the help 1 received - as a kind of lead through which 1 re-collected impressions over many years - through the Terrastrology Course of John Lash. In that course he makes some suggestions as to how he would characterize the significance of the Earth position at the time of incarnation. 1 would like to end this study with simply calling to mind this characterization paraphrased earlier. One can see that if even a certain number of the attributes he offers for the earth's significance are true, then its omission is a blind spot which students and astrological counselors would be greatly enriched and broadened through at least beginning to consider. EARTH: purposeful quality of love, directing power of the ego, self fulfillment, life purpose ... capacity to act in perspective of one's ultimate purpose. Ultimate life vision - sense of destiny. Looking at the chart on page 234 we find that as of June 22 the sun stands at 10 z and the earth stands at 00 opposite. First we find the sidereal time for June 22, 1986 at 7 a.m. (EST). We find it to be at 6h lm 30s. We then look to the date approximately six months opposite or close to the 00 entry on the table and in the ephemeris. Here we look for a sidereal time close to 18 h lm 30s. We find that it falls between December 21 at 7 a.m. (17h 59m 39) and December 22 at 7 a.m. at 18h 03m Os. Looking at the entry for December 22 in the sun column we find the sun to be at 00| J 200 16". This is approximately 1/3 of the day: past the transitional point. We now interpolate in sidereal time 1/3 of the period between December 21 and December 22. For 24 hours the sidereal time has moved: 18h 03m Os 17h 59m 03s 3m 57s or approximately 4m. 4m=240s. 1/3 of 240s. - 80s. or lm 20s. If we subtract lm 20s from 18h 03m Os, the sidereal time for 7 a.m., December 22 we get 18 hr lm 40s, the exact sidereal time corresponding to 00. We then go from 18h lm 40s back to the sun position opposite, subtracting the 12 hours we originally added and get 6hr.' lm 40s. This is 10s past the sidereal time for 7 a.m., June 22. 10s is 1/6 of one minute and the sidereal time changes about 4 minutes in one day. This would make 10s about 1/24 of one day or 1 hour. This tells us that at about 8 a.m. on June 22 the earth opposite the sun is crossing the point of 0 0 entering the tropical sign of Capricorn. This is the way the render could in principle work out any of the transitions for the Table on page 234.

ARCHETYPES OR CATEGORIES OF PHENOMENA

Let me briefly enumerate the archetypes of the physical, life-sense, moral psychological, and spiritual world-view areas fundamental to this calendar.1 PHYSICAL Aries - Head, brow Taurus - Neck, colon area Gemini - Lungs, shoulders, arms, hands, fingers Leo - Heart, circulation Virgo - Stomach, musculature, solar plexus Libra - Hips, kidneys, pelvic area, bladder Scorpio - Reproductive regions, nose, brow Sagittarius - Thighs, upper arms, forebrain Capricorn - Knees, elbows, vertebral column, bony structure, teeth Aquarius - Calves, ankles, forearms, wrists Pisces -Hands, feet, chin LIFE-SENSES Aries - Column of force working up and down spine, shaping head. Related to experience of uprightness. Sense for the word, speech, naming. Taurus - Shaping force working on the colon area and up into the neck area. Having a relation to a rolling, forward motion. Sense for thought, thinking of the other person. Common sense.

1 The reader familiar with astrological tradition as well as Rudolf Steiner's spiritual scientific research will recognize many areas of agreement, others where my designations may be slightly different in characterization. The physical body is largely in agreement. I have added a few things to be observed. As to the 12 varying senses, the 12 moral qualities, and the 12 ways of looking at the world, these were introduced to me through Rudolf Steiner to whom 1 owe an immeasurable debt of gratitude. Nevertheless, what I am suggesting is the fruit of my independent research, albeit directed largely by Rudolf Steiner's findings. Any errors are my sole responsibility. Any differences of view - if only in characterization - will have to be tested by each person for him/herself.

Gemini - Shaping force working over the lungs, shoulders. Radiating down the arms over hands and fingers. Relation to breathing. Sense for the ego of the other person. Could say a sense for the other personality; a sense for his story, history of an individual. How he/she has shaped his history or his capacity to shape history or his own biography. Cancer - Shaping force focalized in the breast, chest area, working over the entire skin. Sense for touch. Leo Shaping forces focalized at the heart, working in relation to the entire circulation, shaping the overall form. Sense for life. Virgo - Shaping forces focalized in the solar plexus, working in the stomach and small intestine region, grasping into the musculature, shaping the musculature. Sense for movement. Libra - Shaping forces working on hips, colon, kidney region. Impression of a girdle like band of forces around the hips. Sense of balance. Scorpio - Shaping forces working on the buttock, excretory, reproductive region, working up into the head area, shaping the lower brow and nose area. Sense of smell. Sagittarius - Shaping forces working on the thighs and upper arms; rounding formation of the head area. Sense of taste. Capricorn - Shaping forces working on the knees and elbows. Also discernible as a column of force running up and down spine, radiating out through the eyes. Sense of sight. Work's in head where two jaws meet in wisdom-teeth area. Aquarius - Shaping forces working on ankles and calves, forearms and wrists. Impression of an overall warmth envelope surrounding entire human form. Sense for warmth. Works plastically in the head where the line runs from the back of the jaws to the chin. Pisces - Shaping forces working on feet and hands. Also in the head region shaping chin area. Related to sense of hearing.

ARIES - IDEALISM A world view that sees life shaping significance in the world of 'ideas', 'ideologies'. As Emerson put it: 'What is important is not events, deeds, even experiences, but ideas."

TAURUS - RATIONALISM Steady, step by step, measured 'reasonable', common-sensical manner of thinking. Reason and thinking through things is a source of knowledge superior to and independent of sense impressions. 'That makes sense'; that is 'nonsense'. GEMINI - MATHEMATISM Type of thinking that seeks to reduce things to 'essentials'. Mathematical, economical and clear. "A line is the shortest distance between two points." A world picture that would try to characterize life in terms of mathematical formulae or reduce the creation to a single mathematical proposition. CANCER - MATERIALISM Type of thinking which is pictorial, sensitive oriented towards the world of matter and the bodily. Seeks to explain all things as based purely on physical, material causes. In a larger sense a thinking that comes out of the 'mother' sphere of the world and man: concerned with nutrition, heredity, racial characteristics, etc. LEO - SENSUALISM A type of thinking which is heartfelt, full of feeling and interest in direct experience of the world through immediate stimulation of the senses and not through analysis and reflection. Related to 'wholism', 'gestalt' views, etc. As Goethe put it 1he senses don't deceive, but the judgement deceives." VIRGO - PHENOMENALISM Sober, methodical, precise grasp of the three-dimensional world of 'appearances'. One sees the world in terms of movement, metamorphosis and development through the course of time. Here is the ripening, maturing, blossoming processes unfolding in time. LIBRA - REALISM Calm, objective and unemotional, even-temperedness in living with(in) day by day changes of life. Strong experience of appearance world as two-dimensional or picture like in character (dream like). Tendency to look at questions from many points of view, or changing standpoints. on the same question is characteristic of this way of seeing life. SCORPIO - DYNAM[ISM World pictures concerned with 'realities' of substance, life, movement in daily changing cycles, here gives way to a view that looks for 'forces' behind phenomena themselves: whether 'magnetism' or 'gravitation', 'stresses' and 'strains'. Becoming change, motion and energy and the forces instrumental in these dynamics of development are basic to Universe's constitution. This is the world of analysis, dissection, etc. SAGITTARIUS - MONADISM 'Logical', concentrated, single-minded thinking, coming from individual 'monadic' units in a complex 'molecule' of consciousness is found here. As Rudolf Steiner put it: "A being who can build up existence in itself and force concepts outward from within itself." Imagine a

meditation teacher radiating out from the third eye a focussed, concept forming power. CAPRICORN - SPIRITISM Thinking is deeply inward, contemplative, prayerful. The orientation is towards what is spiritual. One sees the immanent world as purely the expression of a multitude of individual, hierarchically ordered spiritual beings. This also comes to expression in the scientific striving to find 'laws' of nature. One is reminded as well of the view of Christian Science that the foundation for all of life is 'mind'. AQUARIUS - PNEUMATISM Here is a tolerant, open-minded thinking. One may be living in the 'air waves' or pneuma where one gains impressions of the harmony and intervals or relationships between beings, energies, vibrations. Energies and vibrations as foundational to one's way of looking at life. Here there is an intimate link to the world of electricity, artificial intelligence, 'fields', 'auras' etc. If one compares this with the classical view of the pneuma held by the Stoics -'an ethereal fiery stuff or universal spirit' - one can see the obvious relation to the above named aspects of contemporary life and thinking. PISCES - PSYCHISM Deep, broad, generous thinking. Psychisrn is characterized as a doctrine that there is a fluid, universally diffused and equally animating all living beings. This is the world of the 'psychics'; the would be navigators on the 'sea of life'. Here world causes are thought to lie outside the physical, yet work into it, participating as it does through its universal, fluidic sensitivity, within the manifold, destiny creating impulses and currents in the ocean of life.
