Task 8 Write Up

Laura conducted a focus group to get feedback on her planned POP magazine. The 6 participants stated they wanted to see images of bands/artists on the cover and suggested bright, colorful images would attract readers. They wanted articles like interviews with popular artists and gossip about bands' private lives. Most wanted cover lines about fashion to show the magazine's range of topics. They felt a color scheme using both dark and bright colors would look sophisticated. Informal language was preferred. Images should predominantly feature over text. Appropriate bands included One Direction and Rihanna. Names like "POP IT" or "ALL ABOUT POP" were debated. All agreed a top 10 chart would be a good feature by appealing to mainstream music fans. Task 8- focus group analysis

In order to get more specific feedback on what my target audience would like to see within my POP magazine. I asked my focus group. This included 6 people who have an interest within pop music in which I asked 10 open questions and this is the feedback I got: What images would you like to feature on the front cover? What images would attract you? . ............................................................................................................................................................... All 6 people stated that they would like to see images of bands and artists within the front cover. 2 people also mentioned that theyd like the images to be bright and colourful because they think that this would make them eye catching and appealing to the audience.

What people would like to see on the cover of my magazine

Images of bands and artists.

What articles do you think would be both suitable and interesting? ... .................................................................................................................................................................. All of the 6 people in which I asked stated that theyd like to see articles including interviews, therefore an interview with a popular pop artist. Some also said theyd quite like to see some gossip about bands and artists therefore articles on their private lives. What cover lines would you like to be featured within the front cover that would be interesting and draw you in? .................................................................................................................................................................. .................................................................................................................................................................. Most of my focus group said that theyd like to see coverlines about fashion; which could show the wide range of my magazine showing that although it primarily focuses upon music it also has other features within it. They also think that it would be appropriate to draw people into the main story of the magazine therefore the main article so by advertising it through a coverline, probably the main one on the magazine.

Laura Boucher What colour scheme do you think would be good? . I showed my focus group an example of vibe magazine and how they use monochromic colours and they bright and bold colours to emphasise the main feature within that page and they all thought that it look really sophisticated and professional. They also said that they think I should base my magazine around a colour scheme of both dark and bright colours emphasising the main features. What type of language do you think would be appropriate, formal/informal? 5 out of 6 people thought that informal language would be appropriate and be a good tone throughout each section of my magazine. One person suggested that a chatty tone would be good and that it would make the readers feel comfortable. Would you prefer the magazine to be more so image based or text based? Why? 5 of 6 of the people suggested that it should be predominately image based because they think it would be more interesting to the target audience and attract them more. 1 person suggested that they think the divide should be equal and they thought this because they thought it would be more of interest to the reader. What bands do you think would be appropriate to feature within a POP magazine? All of the audience said the same range of bands and also some suggested artists. The most popular included: The wanted, One direction, Rihanna, Bruno Mars. I am making a pop magazine as I would like to know whether you think that POP IT or ALL ABOUT POP would be suitable names for my POP magazine? . Within my target audience there was a divide between the range of names. 3 people thought POP IT would be the most appropriate and 3 thought that ALL ABOUT POP would be suitable which I think tells me that maybe I should think of a more original name which could attract the majority. Do you think that the top 10 chart would be a good feature of the magazine? All of the 6 people said yes to this question and 1 talked about how POP music mainly features within the top 10 and even if other music does predominantly the people who enjoy POP music will

Laura Boucher most likely also enjoy the mainstream music, this tells me that this will widen the variation of my magazine from just the genre POP and would be a good feature. Do you think that it would be a good idea to link fashion in with the genre of music POP? Maybe suggesting certain clothes for the readers, what do you think? ... The readers have already stated that they think it would be good to widen the idea of the magazine from music to also fashion. They think this because it will attract more people. They also said that the people who are interested in POP often will enjoy a certain type of clothing therefore it would interest them.
