Quad FN Worksheet 2

1. The document is a worksheet on quadratic functions from Raffles Institution covering topics such as the nature of roots based on the discriminant, using the discriminant to solve for unknown constants, points of intersection between lines and quadratic curves, and identifying strictly positive or negative quadratic functions. 2. Examples are provided to investigate the nature of roots, find points of intersection, and determine if functions are always positive or negative based on the sign of the discriminant and the leading coefficient. 3. Practice questions and homework problems reinforce these concepts. Extra questions extend the content to more advanced problems.

POINTS OF INTERSECTION OF LINE AND QUADRATIC CURVE

When a straight line intersect with a quadratic curve, we can find the point(s) of intersection by equating the linear expression (which represents the line) and the quadratic expression (which represents the curve), and solving the new quadratic equation thus formed. Example 6 Find the point(s) of intersection of the line y = x + 3 and curve y = x2 2x 1.
