akistan is the home of different types of pastoralist and nomadic groups. Theses pastoralists inhabitthemountainsandthedesertlandsofthecountry.Theykeepandbreeddifferenttype oflivestockspecies.

Thefollowingmapindicatesthedifferenthabitatsofthepastoralcommunitiesinthecountry.

1: Bhakkarwal
Bhakkarwalfoundintheextremenorthofthecountry.Bhakkarwalarethegoodbreederofgoat (Pahari).Paharigoatislargerinsizewithlonghairandlargehorns.Sheeps,yaksanddonkeysare alsoraisedbythesebreeders.

Thesepastoralskeepthesamepatternoflivestock,livingandmovinginPunjab,NWFPandKashmir.

3: Pashtun (Afghan) pastoralists and nomads


Theyarenomadsaswellaslocalpastoralists.Theykeepsheep,goats,cattle,donkeysandcamels. FamousKohi,GaddaiandRaigicamelsarethewelladaptedcamelbreedsofthatpastoralpeople. TheKhurasaniandhairygoatsarethewellknownbreedsofthosepastorallands.TheDltanibreed offattailsheepisoneofthefamousmilchsheepfoundinPakistanandAfghanistan.

4: Agro-industrial pastoralists
Thesepastoralistsaresmallstockholders,verypoormostlykeepbuffalo,cows,sheep,goatsand sometimeshorses.NeliRaviandKundibuffaloarethefamousbuffalobreedsofthisregion.Sahiwal andRedSidhicattleisthefamousbreedsoftheareadevelopedbytheherdersofthatregion.The areaiscollectivelycalledasIndusDelta.Riverinecamelisaheavycamelbreedofthecountrymainly bredinthisarea.

5: Thalli pastoralists
ThesoilissandyofThal.Thalmeansandyland.TheareaissituatedbetweenChanabandIndus River.Thepastoralsmainlykeepgoat,sheepandcamel.Thesepastoralsaredecreasingwiththe advancementofagriculturewiththeintroductionofThalcanal.

6: Brahvi
ThesepastoralistsresideinthecentralBrahvihighlandsofBalochistan.Theyaretheonlyold DravidiansincentralAsia.Theykeepcamels,goatsandsheep.

TheyliveinthesouthwestofBalochistanprovince,keepingsheep,goatsandcamel.Theareais mainlydesertinnature.
