Visual Arts and the Human Form

All cultures have means of portraying the human form for expression of cultural, social, religious, political, and aesthetic values. In this lesson students are invited to artfully connect, communicate, respond, experiment, and discover new ways to engage in this ancient but very human impulse to represent self and culture. Students will create 2D (gesture drawings) to render the form, working from a model and from their imagination to bring content and personal imagery into their work.
Learning objectives: By the end of the lesson students will:

o Reflect on the human form (self, other and through history). o Know that gesture sketching is used for active thinking -- Most artists plan their artworks in a gesture sketching style. o Become familiar with the terminology utilized in gesture drawing and working from the figure, ink wash renderings and modeling. o Learn techniques of gesture drawing utilizing a model. o Learn methods of charcoal and black felt pen. o Learn methods of ink wash renderings. o Engage in class critiques. o Develop vocabulary and verbal English skills.
