The document discusses various types of storage technologies including hard disks, flash memory storage, cloud storage, optical disks, and others. Hard disks use magnetic platters to store data and come in various types like RAID, NAS, external, and miniature drives. Flash memory storage uses non-volatile memory like SSDs, memory cards, and USB flash drives. Cloud storage provides online storage accessed over the internet. Optical disks include CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs which use metal and plastic discs to store software and data. Other storage includes tape drives, magnetic stripe cards, and smart cards.

CHAPTER 6 : TYPES OF STORAGE STORAGES

Hard disks

Flash memory storage

Cloud storage

Optical disks

Others

HARD DISKS Storage device that contains one or more inflexible, circular platters that use magnetic particles to store data, instructions, informations Perpendicular recording > longitudinal recording Read/write storage media Characteristics of hard disks Capacity Platters Read/write head Cylinders Sectors and tracks Revolution per minutes Transfer rate Access time Types of hard disks RAID NAS External & removable Miniature - A group of 2 or more - Server connected to a - External : separate - Tiny hard disks integrated hard disk. network with a sole freestanding hard (pocket hard drive) purpose of providing disk that connects - 4GB-250GB storage. with a cable toUSB port of FireWire pot. 4TB >> - Removable : hard disk that is insert and remove from drive. - Advantages : +transport large number of files +backup vital files/ entire on internal HD +store large video/audio files +secure data +add storage space to notebook or computer +add storage space w/o having to connect to network Hard disk controller Consists of a special-purpose chip and electronis circuits that control transfer of data, etc SATA EIDE SCSI SAS -uses serial signal to -use parallel signal to -use parallel signal to -newer type of SCSI, transfer data transfer data transfer data uses serial signal to -thinner,longer, -support up 137GB. -support up 8/15 transfer data flexible, less susceptible -provides connections pheripheral devices -thinner, longer cables, to interference than for optical hard drive, reduces interferences, Imanbieyha_2012

FLASH MEMORY STORAGE Type of nonvolatile memory that can be erased electronically or rewritten. Type of SOLID STATE MEDIA, means they consist electronic compound such as integrated circuit, no moving parts thus it is more durable and shock resistant. SSD -storage device typically use flash memory to store data etc -3.5 , 2.5, 1.8 inches -16GB - 256GB -advantages than magnetic HD : access time 0.1ms(80x faster), transfer rate faster, generates less heat and consumes less power, will last 50 years (3-5x than hard disk stated life span) -disadvantages: high failure rate, high costs Memory cards -enable mobile users easily transport digital photos, music, or files to and from mobile devices and computers or other devices USB flash drives -also as thumb drives is a flash memory storage device that plugs in a USB port on a computer or mobile device. -light, small, capacities 512MB 64GB ExpressCard modules -removable device, 75mm long + 34mm wide or L-shaped + 54mm. -used to add memory, storage, multimedia, communications etc -in notebook

CLOUD STORAGE Internet service that provides hard disk storage to computer users. Users subscribe due to : - To access files on internet from any computer or deb=vice that has internet access - Allow others to access their files on internet so others can join the benefit too - To view time-critical data & images immediately while away from main office or location - To store offsite backup of data - To provide data center functions OPTICAL DISCS - type of optical storage media that consists of a flat, round, portable disc made of metal, plastic, and lacquer. 4.75 inches, less than 1/12 thick. it stores software, data, etc CDs Archive discs & picture discs DVDs & blue-rays -CD-ROM -to preserves photos -DVD-ROM -CD-R -Blu-ray discs -CD-RWs -recordable and rewritable DVD OTHERS Tape drives Magnetic stripe card Smart card -magnetically coated ribbon of -credit card, entertainment -similar size to ATM card, stores plastics capable of storing large card, with stripe that contains data on a thin microprocessor amount of data at low cost information identifying you and embedded in the card -reads and writes data on tape the card -contains processor, input, -requires sequential access -reads information stored in the output, process, storage stripes capabilities
