I. TITLE
The Developmental Origins of Modern Disease – Are We Programmed to Develop Disease In the
Womb?
II. DESCRIPTION
There is compelling evidence to support the revolutionary concept of non genetic, foetal and
neonatal programming of many chronic diseases which are often only manifest decades later in
adult life. Many of these disease development phenomena are now strongly linked to sub-optimal
environmental and nutritional conditions in the womb.
In this lecture the evidence for the concept of foetal disease programming, its causes and also its effect on
subsequent risk of developing diseases as diverse as pre-eclampsia, coronary artery disease, and breast
cancer will be explored.
Furthermore, the opportunity for nutritional and other interventions to negate adverse programming
occurring possibly represents the most profound and unexplored mechanism for chronic disease
prevention to come to light for many years.

IV. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
a. Link between metabolic programming in preconceptual, foetal and neonatal periods and the
risk of subsequent disease later in life
b. The role of sub-optimal nutritional and environmental conditions in the preconceptual, foetal
and neonatal periods which lead to adverse programming
c. Therapeutic options available to prevent adverse programming or help to re-write write the
programme later in life
Pharmacy: minor mention of insulin reactivity and glucose tolerance, Th1, Th2.
Target audience: Physicians, medical practitioners, Obstetricians and midwives, Chinese and Eastern
medicine practitioners, Homeopaths, Nutritionists, herbalists, botanists, Researchers and scientists,
Educators, Students
Presentation should be submitted for CE credits
Bio:
Dr. Nigel Plummer Ph.D has his doctorate in microbial physiology from the University of Surrey
(London) and has worked at Pfizer in antibiotic research and development. His research on the use of
normal flora in the prevention and treatment of genito-urinary candidiasis has won him numerous
awards. Dr. Plummer continues his solid commitment to research throughout his career in collaboration
with research institutes and universities within the UK and Europe, developing an extensive knowledge
specializing in probiotics, natural antimicrobials and fish oils.
Dr. Plummer’s research involves the role of probiotics in:
modulation of the gastrointestinal microbiota and the prevention of antibiotic resistance post
antibiotic therapy
prevention of Clostridium difficile diarrhoeal infections
the control of IBS symptoms
prevention of allergy – modulation of the neonatal intestinal microbiota to minimize the
incidence of atopic eczema and subsequent asthma development.
