Preface
Every attempt has been made to ensure that the book lists included below are accurate
and complete. However, some books are so scarce that research becomes difficult. If
anyone finds errors or omissions in any of these lists, please contact the author or publisher. Any and all corrections and suggestions for additions are appreciated.
Note that no distinction has been made between biography and historical fiction. In
the case of the Newbery and Caldecott award books, many of the selections are fictional
books with Catholic content.
While some of the series books described below are back in print, many of these books
are currently out of print. This means that they are not currently being published; new
copies are not available. However, this does not mean that copies of the book are not
available for purchase. In fact, many of the out-of-print hardbacks are less expensive to
purchase than the paperback editions that are currently being republished. (See Book
Collecting Basics beginning on page 205 for more information.) For your convenience,
the following symbols are used to indicate the relative availability of each book:
*

In print and readily available

Out of print, rare, usually priced over $15.00
Out of print, scarce, usually priced over $30.00 with limited copies available

The absence of a symbol beside an out-of-print book indicates that it is readily available
for $10.00-$15.00 or less.
Whenever possible, space is provided at the end of each series listing for personal
notes. Use this space to list books from the series that you would like to read or purchase,
or to note books in the series that you already own or have already read. You may wish to
use this space to make general comments on the series based upon your own experience.
While the books listed within each series are in chronological or alphabetical order,
the order in which each series is introduced is based upon the reading level of the series.
Those series with books geared to the youngest readers are listed first in both the
Catholic Out-of-Print Series Books and Catholic Series Books in Print sections.
May Reading the Saints be a blessing to you and to your family as you incorporate a
study of our Catholic saints into your history and religious curricula.

Be as careful of the books you read, as of the company you keep,

for your habits and character will be as much influenced by the
former as the latter. ~ Paxton Hood

Faith and Freedom Readers

Although Seton Press has reprinted many of the revised editions of the Faith and Freedom
readers in paperback (*), all of these readers are out of print in the hardcover edition.
These books were published in the original edition (1940s), as well as new (1950s) and
revised (1960s) editionsall containing different stories. In addition, several different
titles were published in Canada. Remember when searching for these books that although
the newer editions are more reasonably priced and easier to find, the Catholic content
decreases with each republished edition. (The following list may be incomplete.)

MY BOOK! I did it! I did it!

Come and look at what Ive done!
I read a book!
When someone wrote it long ago
For me to read how did he know
That this was the book
Id take from the shelf
And lie on the floor
And read by myself?
I really read it! Just like that!
Word by word, from first to last!
Im sleeping with this book in bed,
This first FIRST book
Ive ever read! ~David L. Harrison
