Message from the Director

The idea of a kabuki inspired production of Macbeth has been poking around in the back of my mind for years. Every once and a while, I would share a quick sketch of the idea with people, and they would always respond positively. I nally reached the point where it could not live as just an idea any longer and here we are. Why kabuki inspired? I love how theatrical a kabuki performance is. It has musicians on stage, has dance, singing, amazing costumes, stylized makeup, vocals, and movement. Please note, our show is not kabuki! We do not have the expertise, budget, nor would we have the time to learn all of the required skills, and to be honest there are some aspects of kabuki that dont work well for a community theatre in Canada. We dont have an all male cast for instance. Rather the cast, crew and I have drawn elements from kabuki and wove them into our production so that we can create an atmosphere of an Asian ashen nightmare. In particular, one thing to look for is the use of the fan. In kabuki the fan acts like the swiss-army-knife of props. It can represent many things. It can be concrete items such as a sword or a cup, and can be used to represent more abstract things like wind, sounds, and earthquakes. The most amazing thing about working on this production, is seeing the huge number of people dedicating their time and talent. Some of the new skills learned just for this show: didgeridoo, repouss and chasing (metal working method used to create the crown), learning to sit still, how to move a landscape rock, how to weild a 7+ foot weapon in a conned space safely, and how to make blood from ribbons. A special thanks to Cheryl for being a trusty set of second eyes and seeing that which I miss. I believe the community really stepped up to all the challenges presented. It is great to get this out of my head and onto the stage. We hope you enjoy the show.

Melanie Card

Witch

Melanie is thrilled to be involved with KWLTs production of Macbeth. Its been a while since shes performed in a Shakespeare play and it feels good to be chewing on the fabulous language again. Thank you Jonathan and Cheryl, my fellow witches, and the cast and crew for a wonderful experience. And thank you Rob for just being you.

Stefania Rose Costume Director

Stefania Roses experience in art and fashion has led her to costume design. Her most recent work includes designing custom stage wear for vocalist Dana Jean Phoenix. This is Stefanias rst production with KWLT, and her rst time costuming an entire cast. She would not have been able to do it without the guidance and assistance of Adrienne Dandy. Its been an exciting process to see Jonathans vision come to life, and Stefania is thrilled to have been part of it.

Alisha Cormier

Murderer

Adrienne Dandy Costume Team

Adrienne Dandy made clothing and medieval reenactment wear for over two decades before nding an outlet for her passion in theatre costumes. This show, with the vibrant creativity of both Jonathan and Stefania, has been a delight to work on. Her past work includes costumes for KWLTs The Importance of Being Earnest, The Three Musketeers, and Captain Hooks Revenge, as well as TenBareToes Entertainments The Taming of the Shrew.

This will be Alishas fourth KWLT role onstage and the fth time she has worked with the company an honour. She played Lady Macbeth in Ladies, Sigh No More, the Gossip in The Cagebirds, and a Baker Street Irregular in Sherlocks Excellent Adventure. She was also the ASM for KWLTs 2008 production of The Three Musketeers where she was handed a sword and learned some ght choreography. The experience of working on such a unique production has allowed Alisha to see a side of theatre that most dont explore. She feels that Jonathan Dietrichs Macbeth has been a worthwhile experience and hopes audience members will enjoy and appreciate Shakespeare all the more for it. As always, Alisha would like to thank her wonderful husband, John, for always being supportive.

Nick is happy to be working with Jonathan again and the KWLT team on this Kabuki inspired show. Having an opportunity to work with traditional Japanese weapons (Naginata and Yari) has been fun even though KWLTs space isnt conducive to 7-8 long pole-arms. Thanks to the cast and crew (especially Chad for his assistance) for all their dedication and creativity working through the combat sequences. Remember, safety then story then style.

Some of Joshs previous show experience includes Rochefort from The Three Musketeers, King Philip from The Lion in Winter, and having directed KWLTs 2008 pantomime, Captain Hooks Revenge. Much love and gratitude to his wife and children in letting him take time away from the duties of being a father and husband, and replacing them with pretend duties of being a pretendfather and pretend-husband... and Avenger of Scotland.

Peggy was born and grew up on farm in Saskatchewan near Swift Current. In high school Peggy was the Pooh Bah in The Mikado; she played the ute in the orchestra for the community production of Oklahoma; and she played the ute in the Saskatchewan Youth Band. Peggy graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon with her Bachelor of Education and now teaches piano. Continuing on with performance is on Peggys bucket list, so she is excited and grateful to Jonathan Dietrich for having her as part of Macbeth. Peggy enjoys spending time with her husband, four grown children, and three year old granddaughter. She is excited to share her talents and appreciates all the support shes had during the rehearsals.

Douglas rst met Jonathan and Anita in the late 90s, performing Shakespeare in Waterloo park with a now-defunct acting troupe called Ravenblack; so it seemed only right to audition when they were staging Macbeth. Douglas has been in many KWLT shows over the years, such as Mort, Julius Caesar, Rozencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. Shes the current Executive Producer for KWLT, was recently accepted onto the Arts and Culture Advisory Committee for the city of Kitchener and works for the Multicultural Cinema Club. She would like to thank Daenera and Keiran for their love and support. On a nal note: for all his self deprecation, Douglas sincerely feels that she has never met anyone with more raw talent and artistic passion (especially about Shakespeare) as an actor than Jonathan Dietrich.

Andrea Wilson

Lady Macbeth

Andrea is delighted to be on stage at KWLT again after a long time away. She is thankful for getting to work with such a wonderful cast and crew. Its a joy to rehearse with so much support and so strong a group. Thanks to Jonathan and Cheryl and the stage management team for creating a wonderful environment within which all actors can grow and explore this fabulous text. And thanks to Andrew for chugging through it with her, night after night.
