Three Definition of Guidance

1. The act or process of guiding. 2. Counseling, such as that provided for students seeking advice about vocational and educational matters 3. Any of various processes for guiding the path of a vehicle or missile, by means of built-in equipment.

Aims and Purpose of Guidance

The terms guidance and counseling are often interchanged, due to their close relationship with one another and the fact that, at times, the functions of the two have a significant overlap. They ultimately have, however, two distinctly different sets of methods, aims and goals.

Guidance Guidance becomes clear when it is taken back to its root verb: To guide. The definition of this verb is: To lead the way, to assist, to accompany and give direction to, to compel to follow or choose a certain path, to show something and explain its meaning or importance. The noun guide is defined as a person who guides, something to provide reference, or a guidebook.

So, guidance is the process of guiding a person along a particular path, of showing them what they should do, how to do it and explaining why it should be done, and in this way. The AIM of guidance, then, is to lead an individual into a pre-determined direction of the leader's choice. The GOAL is to get the individual to follow the path selected for them, or behave in a particular way.
Counseling The verb counsel is defined as: To advise, to recommend the adoption of a plan of action, to direct the judgment of another. The noun counsel is defined as: Interchange of opinions with regards to future procedure, deliberation, consultation. Counseling then, is the process of advising an individual while at the same time encouraging them to voice their own opinions and use their own judgment with regards to future actions or the resolution of problems. The aim is to assist the individual in becoming psychologically mature and able to realize their potential. The goals of counseling are self-realization and self-actualization of an individual, providing them with self-direction and self-motivation.

Importance and Functionss of Guidance

Guidance and counselling can be beneficial to a number of different types of people and problems. It can help to make them feel listened to without being judged by someone they know. Talking to a stranger is often easier than talking to a judged one, as if you feel uncomfortable or say the wrong thing then you dont have to see them ever again. They are less likely to judge you as they can see the overall picture and get to know you and your situation based on what you tell them. A counsellor can often be understanding and help you to talk through your problems. It will feel like a weight has been lifted off your chest, so you should feel a lot better about everything. There are a number of different reasons that people go for guidance and counselling sessions. This may be because of an illness and learning to deal with it, or that of another family member or close friend. They may also be able to help in cases of depression or unhappiness. Self-confidence issues are also common, and the counsellor can help to give you advice to make you feel better about yourself and put some things into practise. There are many counsellors around the world, and some of these can be free of charge if you go through your doctor. Of course, this depends on what country you are from, but generally within the UK it doesnt cost a thing unless you go private.

Eight Basic Principles of Guidance

- Guidance is a continuous process - guidance activites are specifically planned and developed to ensure program effectiveness. - guidance is fundamentally the responsibility of the parents in the home and in the school - guidance is education but not all education is guidance - guidance is a learning process - guiding is helping the client understand himself - guidance is based in the concept of the client Situation e.g. for Principles a. Smoking cessation for an example with school students should not only rely on counseling itself, it should be reinforced with a specific implementation in whatever means of actions that should be done like referring a person to engage in a specific group or spiritual building of oneself. After all is done, this would integrate turning someone into a better and disciplined person. b. Discipline of a child should always start at their homes and it should be always a priority and never be neglected. The strongest discipline can always be obtained at everyones home, afterwards the school, their environment and peers should follow in order to have a conducive place for obeying such a rule as principles in life. c. Guidance should always focus on the person whos in need of an advice and not the counselor itself. Client should reflect his/her own faults so that he may explore his weakness and strengths so, hence he/she may be proudly be able to resolve his/her own conflicts in life..

DIFFERENTIATION OF PSYCHOTHERAPY AND EDUCATION COUNSELING Psychotherapy" and "counseling" are terms that are often used interchangeably. Although they are very similar, there are some subtle differences as well. Technically speaking, "counselor" means "advisor." It involves two people working together to solve a problem. It is a term that is used in conjunction with many types of advice giving. For example, financial planning and spiritual guidance are both types of counseling. Just about anyone at all may claim to be a counselor if they are in the role of giving advice. The term counseling may also properly be used to refer to what occurs in a relationship with a psychotherapist. In the context of mental health, "counseling" is generally used to denote a relatively brief treatment that is focused most upon behavior. It often targets a particular symptom or problematic situation and offers suggestions and advice for dealing with it. "Psychotherapy" on the other hand is generally a longer term treatment which focuses more on gaining insight into chronic physical and emotional problems. It's focus is on the patient's thought processes and way of being in the world rather than specific problems. In actual practice there may be quite a bit of overlap between the two. A therapist may provide counseling with specific situations and a counselor may function in a psychotherapeutic manner. Generally speaking, however, psychotherapy requires more skill than simple counseling. It is conducted by professionals trained to practice psychotherapy such as a psychiatrist, a trained counselor, social worker or psychologist. While a psychotherapist is qualified to provide counseling, a counselor may or may not possess the necessary training and skills to provide psychotherapy.
