What is a function
Need to know

Denition of function. How to get function information from tables, graphs, formulas and words. Interpret the meaning of f ( a), vertical intercept and horizontal intercept. Increasing and decreasing function. 1.1.2 Denition

A function is a rule that takes certain numbers as inputs and assigns to each one denite output number. The set of all input numbers is called the domain of the function and the set of resulting output numbers is called the range of the function. The input is called the independent variable and the output is called the dependent variable. We write y = f ( x ) to express the fact that y is a function of x. The independent variable is x, the dependent variable is y, and f is the name of function. 1.1.3 Get function information

1) Function represented by tables Example 1 Find f (20). x f (x)

2) Function represented by formula Example 2 Annual revenue R from McDonalds restaurants worldwide can be estimated by R(t) = 19.1 + 1.8t, where R is in billion dollars and t is in years since 2005. (a) Find the value of R when t is zero? (b) What is the meaning of R(20)?

Recall: The intercept is where the graph of a function crosses the horizontal or vertical axis. Vertical intercept(y-intercept) :.

Horizontal intercept:(x-intercept(s)):

Example 3 The following gure shows the amount of nicotine, N = f (t), in mg, in a persons bloodstream as a function of the time, t, in hours, since the person nished smoking a cigarette. N (mg) 0.5 0.4 0.3 0.2 0.1 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 t (hours)

(a) Estimate f (3) and interpret it in terms of nicotine. (b) About how many hours have passed before the nicotine level is down to 0.1 mg? (c) What is the vertical intercept? What does it represent in terms of nicotine? (d) If this function had a horizontal intercept, what would it represent?

Example 4 In the Andes mountains in Peru, the number, N, of species of bats is a function of the elevation, h, in feet above sea level, so N = f (h). (a) Interpret the statement f (500) = 100 in terms of bat species. (b) What are the meanings of the vertical intercept and horizontal intercept?

4) Function represented by words How to change the information from words to the graph ? Example 5 A pizza from the refrigerator is placed on the kitchen counter for 10 minutes and then moved into an oven to bake. 20 minutes later, it is moved out of the oven and placed on the kitchen counter for 20 minutes. Sketch a graph of the temperature T of the pizza as a function of t, the number of minutess since it was taken out from the refrigerator.

1.1.4

Increasing and decreasing function

A function f is increasing if the values of f ( x ) increases as x increases. A function f is decreasing if the values of f ( x ) decreases as x increases. The graph of an increasing function climbs as we move from left to right. The graph of an decreasing function descends as we move from left to right.
