Sight Word Sort and Graph Word Study Station

Sight Word Syllable Sort & Graph Directions


Preparation: Print cards on cardstock and cut apart. Create more than one set to allow multiple groups of students to utilize this station at one time. Store cards for use across multiple school years. Photocopy student response sheets. Cut in half for students to use. Skills covered: reading 3rd grade Dolch sight words syllabication basic graphing

Directions: Have students work in pairs or a small group with a teacher. As a group, work through the pile of cards discussing and sorting. Once all the words have been sorted, mix the cards back together. Put into a pile upside down and have pairs select 10 cards. Partners should read the cards out loud and sort them based on the number of syllables. Partners can then record their words on their response sheet and complete the graph to reflect how many of each type of word they have. When students finish they can play a matching game by turning all the cards upsidedown and selecting two, If the words have the same number of syllables they count as a match, and the player goes again. If they do not have the same number of syllables, the cards are turned back over and the next player goes. The game ends when there are no more possible matches. The player with the most pairs wins.
