NEW DELHI: India's population has jumped to 1.21 billion, an increase of more than 181 million during 2001-11, according to provisional data of Census 2011 released on Thursday. Though the population is almost equal to the combined population of the U.S., Indonesia, Brazil, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Japan (1,214.3 million), the silver lining is that after 1911-21 the past decade (2001-11) witnessed the addition of smaller population than the previous decade's growth. Of the total provisional population of 1,210.2 million, the number of males stood at 623.7 million and females at 586.5 million. The percentage growth in 2001-11 was 17.64 males 17.19 and females 18.12. India's population accounts for 17.5 per cent of the world's.
Registrar-General and Census Commissioner of India C. Chandramouli released the provisional data here, in the presence of Union Home Secretary G.K. Pillai. Provisional population is arrived at by adding the population as reported by each enumerator, and the final population data is likely to be released next year, Dr. Chandramouli told journalists. Among the States and the Union Territories, Uttar Pradesh is the most populous State with 199 million people, followed by Maharashtra with 112 million people. Lakshadweep is the least populated at 64,429 people. The percentage decadal growth rates of the six most populous States have declined during 200111 compared with 1991-2001. The population growth in Uttar Pradesh has declined from 25.85 per cent to 20.09 per cent, in Maharashtra from 22.73 per cent to 15.99 per cent, Bihar from 28.62 per cent to 25.07 per cent, West Bengal from 17.77 per cent to 13.93 per cent, Andhra Pradesh from 14.59 per cent to 11.10 per cent and Madhya Pradesh from 24.26 per cent to 20.30 per cent. This shows that we have added population, but the growth [rate] has been less, Dr. Chandramouli said. The overall sex ratio nationwide has increased by seven percentage points to 940 against 933 in Census 2001. Sex ratio is defined as the number of females per 1,000 males. An increase in sex ratio was observed in 29 States/Union Territories. Kerala with 1,084 has the highest sex ratio followed by Puducherry with 1,038. With 618, Daman and Diu has the lowest ratio. This is the highest sex ratio at the national level since Census 1971 and a shade lower than 1961. Three major States Jammu and Kashmir, Bihar and Gujarat have shown a decline in sex ratio as compared to Census 2001, Dr. Chandramouli said. India's skewed sex ratio due to female foeticide and selective sex determination has been a cause for concern. However, the area of grave concern, Dr. Chandramouli said, remained the lowest ever child sex ratio of 914. The provisional data showed that the child sex ratio [0 to 6 years] came down to 914 females per 1,000 males against 927 in Census 2001. It showed a continuing preference for male children in the last decade. An increasing trend in the child sex ratio was seen in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Mizoram and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, but in the remaining States/UTs, the ratio showed a decline. While the overall sex ratio has improved since 1991, the decline in child sex ratio has been unabated since the 1961Census. The total number of children in the age group of 0-6 is now 158.8 million, less by five million since 2001. Literacy rate up The literacy rate has gone up from 64.83 per cent in 2001 to 74.04 per cent, an increase of 9.21 percentage points.

Census of India 2011: Three out of four Indians can read and write now
ET Bureau Apr 1, 2011, 09.23am IST NEW DELHI: India's effective literacy rate has recorded a 9.2% rise to reach 74.04%, according to provisional data of the 2011 census released on Thursday. Even as there was a sense of achievement at the improvement in the literacy rate, questions are being raised about what constitutes literacy and the real import of the continued high gender gap. Literacy rate improved sharply among females as compared to males. While the effective literacy rate for males rose from 75.26% to 82.14%, marking a rise of 6.9%, it increased by 11.8% for females to go from 53.67% to 65.46%. The gap of 21.59 percentage points recorded between male and female literacy rates in 2001 census reduced to 16.68 percentage points in 2011. The Planning Commission had set up a target of reducing this gap to 10 percentage points by 2011-12. "This is good news, but a lot more work needs to be done. The gender gap is still large, at 17%. This is a cause for concern given that this decade has seen a lot of investment in girls education. Age-wise data is likely to show that the improvement in female literacy is on the back of the elementary education programmes," Malini Ghose of Nirantar, a NGO working in the area of education. Eleven states and Union Territories have recorded literacy rates below the national average of 74.04%. This include Bihar, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Over the last decade these states have improved literacy rates anywhere by 6.2% to 24%. While Bihar is the most laggard, at a literacy rate of 63.8%, it has made substantial improvement over its Census 2001 performance of 47%.
The most impressive gain was made by Jharkhand, which improved on its Census 2001 figure of 53.6%. The state's literacy rate according to the provisional numbers announced on Thursday is 67.6%. Former education secretary Anil Bordia said that far from a cause for celebration, the figure are a "cause for distress". "The factor that makes the difference is female literacy," Bordia explains his unease with the figures. "Take Rajasthan, the male literacy rate is 80.51%, while the female literacy rate is 52.66%. This is a huge gap," the former education secretary said. He said that there is overlap in the states where the literacy rate is below the national average and where the school drop out rate is high. Effective literacy rate in the 2001 census was 64.83%, which improved to 74.04%. Registrar General of India and Census Commissioner C Chandramauli said it was encouraging to note that out of total 217,700,941 literates added during the decade, females at 110,069.001 outnumbered males at 107,631,940. A significant milestone reached in 2011 census was the decline of illiterates by 31,196,847. Bordia raises the question of what constitutes literacy. "Respondents are asked if they are literate, and how they became literate. That is not the way to do this. They need to be asked to read and write. Also it is time we reviewed the definition of literacy, to include mathematics. This base level of literacy doesn't change a person's life, except give a little more confidence."
Total population of India has reached to 121 crores. It comprises 62.37 crores males and 58.65 crores females. Total absolute increase in population during the decade is 18.15 crores. Population growth during the decade remained 17.64 percent. Density of population per sq. km. has been 382 persons. Sex ratio for females per 1000 males is 940 females. Child sex ratio for females is 914 per 1000 males. Literacy rate of India has gone up to 74.04 percent from previous figure of 64.83 percent.
