Floridas January Employment Figures Released

www.employflorida.com

NOTE TO EDITORS: Every March, the U.S. Department of Labors Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Florida
Department of Economic Opportunity release January employment and unemployment estimates as well as revised
historical data. Todays report is the result of that annual process, which is known as benchmarking. These
benchmark revisions are a standard part of the estimation process and take place this same time every year in each
state nationwide. As a result of this annual benchmarking process, the release of January and February 2013
employment data is scheduled for March 18 and March 29, respectively.
TALLAHASSEE Floridas seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 7.8 percent in January 2013, the lowest since
November 2008 when it was also 7.8 percent. The January rate was down slightly from the revised December rate of
7.9 percent and was 1.4 percentage points lower than the year-ago rate of 9.2 percent. There were 740,000 jobless
Floridians out of a labor force of 9,422,000. The U.S. unemployment rate was 7.9 percent in January. This was the
first time Floridas rate fell below the national rate since January 2008.
Floridas seasonally adjusted total nonagricultural employment was 7,467,500 in January 2013, an increase of 15,400
jobs (+0.2 percent) over the month. The number of jobs in the state was up 127,500 from January 2012, an increase
of 1.7 percent. Nationally, the number of jobs was up 1.5 percent over the year.

Floridas Nonagricultural Employment by Industry (Seasonally Adjusted)

The number of jobs in Florida was 7,467,500 in January 2013, up 127,500 jobs compared to a year ago. January 2013
th
was the 30 consecutive month with positive annual job growth after the state lost jobs for over three years. The
industry gaining the most jobs was trade, transportation, and utilities (+35,500 jobs, +2.3 percent).

Other industries gaining jobs included leisure and hospitality (+34,000 jobs, +3.5 percent); professional and business
services (+27,000, +2.6 percent); private education and health services (+23,500 jobs, +2.1 percent); construction
(+7,400 jobs, +2.2 percent); other services (+6,800 jobs, +2.2 percent); financial activities (+4,000 jobs, +0.8 percent),
and manufacturing (+2,200 jobs, +0.7 percent).

These industry job gains were partially due to increases in motor vehicle and parts dealers; food services and drinking
places; employment services; ambulatory health care services; construction of buildings; membership associations and
organizations; real estate; and transportation equipment manufacturing.

Industries losing jobs over the year included total government (-10,300 jobs, -0.9 percent) and information
(-2,700 jobs, -2.0 percent).

These industry job losses were partially due to declines in local government and telecommunications.

Local Area Unemployment Statistics (Not Seasonally Adjusted)

In January 2013, Monroe County (4.6 percent) had the states lowest unemployment rate, followed by Walton County
(5.6 percent); Alachua and Okaloosa counties (6.0 percent each); and St. Johns County (6.2 percent). Many of the
counties with the lowest unemployment rates were those with relatively high proportions of government
employment.

Hendry County had the highest unemployment rate (11.4 percent) in Florida in January 2013, followed by Flagler
County (11.0 percent); Putnam County (10.9 percent); and Dixie and St. Lucie counties (10.1 percent each). There
were six Florida counties with double-digit unemployment rates in January, up from four in December.

Area Nonagricultural Employment (Not Seasonally Adjusted)

Nearly all of the 22 metro areas in the state had over-the-year job gains in January 2013. The areas with the largest
gains were Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater (+31,200 jobs, +2.7 percent), Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford (+20,200 jobs,
+2.0 percent), and Jacksonville (+17,500 jobs, +3.0 percent).

The only metro area experiencing an over-the-year job decline was Sebastian-Vero Beach (-400 jobs, -0.9 percent).
Note: The unemployment and job growth rates are estimates, which are primarily based on surveys created and mandated by the U.S. Bureau of Labor
Statistics in cooperation with the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity.
The unemployment rate is derived from Florida household surveys conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau under contract with the U.S. Bureau of Labor
Statistics. The job growth rate is derived from Florida employer surveys conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Both estimates are revised on a monthly basis. In addition, these estimates are benchmarked (revised) annually based on actual counts from Florida's
Reemployment Assistance tax records and other data.
Procedures mandated by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics may result in more variable month-to-month changes. For further information, go to:
