Nathalie Dagmang 2010-24702 BFA Sculpture Synergy Synergy in art can be defined as a state in which two images, when

combined, will create one whole image with a greater effect that cannot be achieved by each of the image alone. To achieve synergy, two images that are totally different from each other in terms of visual elements like color, lines, shapes, etc. are combined. As these two images are put together, the visual elements are slightly adjusted to create more unity and harmony within the composition while still maintaining some elements and themes to show the process of creating synergy from two unrelated figures. Two magazine cut-outs were used, one was of a blond woman washing her face and another was that of a large pond with light reflections from the sunset and vegetation (creating the scattered hues of oranges, greens, pinks and blues) and ducks that leave ripple tracks along the waters. The themes of these two images are related in some way. Both images show water and liquid movements, although the first image shows an indoor water scene while the second one can only be seen outdoors. But by putting the image of the human on the background of a pond, the human appears to be taking a bath outdoors, and a giant human at that. To some, it can also be perceived as a woman taking a bath in colored waters with miniature ducks floating around her. The play on proportion creates a story for the painting, and at the same time, makes the subject more interesting by making it look unnatural. In order to create more unity, the human figure was glazed with some colors that composed the background, like red, orange, yellow and blue, so that it would appear less isolated. The rendering of the two images are also somehow different, with the background showing more roughly applied brush strokes and the human figure with a smoother rendering. The edges of the human figure are made to be more rough and uneven to make it look less of a magazine cutout, and blend more to the background. The dynamic movement of the composition is achieved by the direction of the splashes, the diagonal lines from the waves highlights, the direction of the ripples created by the ducks and the shape of the product image (which is circular). Although these changes were applied on the images to help with the composition, there were also visual elements that are unaltered. In spite of the red and yellow hues glazed over the human figure, the paleness is still maintained by simultaneously brightening up the already vivid colors of the background to still show the contrast between the tones of the two images. The lack of details on the background also works well with the details of the human figure and made it the focus of the work, so this characteristic is also maintained for creating an emphasis. It also helped that the rendering of the ducks in the background are somehow less realistic than that of the human figure, making it more recognizable. The circular format of the painting also helped emphasize the focus by narrowing the view and somehow pulling the eye towards the center of the shape.
