Context
Contextualism is a design approach which derives from the belief that a new building must blend in with its neighbors in terms of height, materials, fenestration etc. The surrounding has a urban context. Surrounding area of project site is scarcely populated, comes under commercial area. At a regional level the campus sits on a keystone location on the ridge - the confluence of three ridge zones of Delhi. The site allows for a significant opportunity to physically weave the South Central Ridge (JNU and beyond) with the Southern Ridge system. Being situated on higher ground offers views of the Qutub Minar to the east and the Moradabad Pahari Masjid towards north.
Local Influence
The site is located at vasant kunj, institutional area, New Delhi. Vasant Kunj is an affluent residential colony located in South West Delhi district of Delhi, India, on the hills of Aravali, which today has well over 100,000 residents. Most residents reside in flats built by DDA. The Vasant Kunj community is considered to be well educated and prosperous. Vasant Kunj is home to many intellectuals, prominent businessmen, celebrities, etc.
THE GRAND
Accessibility
The distance between Vasant Kunj and some prominent areas within the NCT of Delhi/New Delhi are as follows: Qutub Minar : 4 km IGI Airport Terminal 3 : 6 km Dwarka Sub City : 11 km AIIMS : 14 km Connaught Place : 17 km Nizamuddin Railway Station : 20 km Kashmere Gate : 25 km Bawana : 50 km The distance between Vasant Kunj and some prominent areas in the Delhi NCR region are as follows: Gurgaon : 15 km Noida : 27 km Faridabad : 33 km The nearest Delhi Metro stations are at Chhatarpur, which is situated on Andheria More and is on the Yellow Line of the Delhi Metro and Aerocity, which is situated on Mahipalpur Chowk and is on the Orange Line of the Delhi Metro.
The Site
The site offered unique constraints and opportunities, being on the edge of the undulating Ridge Zone of the city (though excluded from the "Notified Forest" designation), it sits in a highly sensitive ecological corridor with an interesting neighbouring ensemble of the five star Grand Hotel on the east, high end plotted developments to the south, institutional buildings and the bio-diversity park to the north-northwest. The proposed site has very hard rocky natural ground. The bearing capacity is not been tested but seems to be challenging for the construction of building over this natural ground. Ecologically, the master plan recognizes and respects the ridge lines and valleys on the site and ties it back to the larger geo-morphological grain of the ridge landform. The spectacular canyon roughly in the centre of the site becomes a primary organizing element. The plan responds to the demands of the local climate which features large variations in temperature, high levels of solar radiation and the monsoon season and it also had to respond to the topography of the site.
Statistics
Precipitation
The probability that precipitation will be observed at this location varies throughout the year. Precipitation is most likely around July 27, occurring in 51% of days. Precipitation is least likely around November 20, occurring in 4% of days.
Statistics

Wind Speed
Over the course of the year typical wind speeds vary from 0 m/s to 7 m/s (calm to moderate breeze), rarely exceeding 11 m/s (fresh breeze). The highest average wind speed of 4 m/s (gentle breeze) occurs around May 29, at which time the average daily maximum wind speed is 7 m/s (moderate breeze). The lowest average wind speed of 1 m/s (light air) occurs around November 2, at which time the average daily maximum wind speed is 4 m/s (gentle breeze).
Wind Directions over the Entire Year The wind is most often out of the west (20% of the time), east (13% of the time), and North West (11% of the time). Problems
Traffic congestion
Inadequate parking facility as compared to its demand. no separation between pedestrian and vehicular traffic
Circulation
Clash between pedestrian and vehicular traffic causes major bottleneck. As the main street is crossed thorough traffic on street perpendicular to it this result in traffic bottleneck.
