PUBLIC INFORMATION SESSION ON RADON GAS Monday, March 4th, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. Mlacak Centre, Halls C&D, 2500 Campeau Dr.
Radon is a colourless, odourless, radioactive gas that occurs naturally in the environment, coming from the natural breakdown of uranium in soils and rocks. It is widely found in homes across Canada.
It does not tend to be an issue outside, as it dilutes to harmless levels in the atmosphere. However, in a confined space like a basement radon can accumulate to high levels. Exposure to high concentrations of radon can increase a persons risk of developing lung cancer. A number of residents have contacted me about their concerns over radon in homes, so I have organized a public meeting, with assistance from Health Canada, to provide you with information and answer questions. A representative from Tarion Warranty Corporation will also be speaking about radon warranty coverage under the Ontario New Home Warranties Plan Act. This meeting is open to all residents, not just those in Kanata North, as radon can be found everywhere. Please let your friends and neighbours across the city know about this information meeting which will both inform you and provide recommendations on actions that can ensure you have a safe level in your home.

PUBLIC MEETING ON DRAINAGE FROM THE BEAVER POND & THE BLANDING TURTLE STUDY Monday March 18th, 6:30 8:30 p.m. Mlacak Centre, Presentations and Q & A at 7 p.m.
This Public Meeting includes the interim results of the study done by AECON for the City of Ottawa on drainage from Watts Creek at the Beaver Pond and Shirleys Brook, both of which drain the KNL lands. This is your opportunity to provide input into the drainage study before it is finalized. A second meeting will be held once the Final Draft Report is received likely in May. The report will not recommend the drainage plan for the KNL lands but will make some suggestions about how to approach it. KNL will be developing their own drainage plan along with a grading plan,
which will then need City approval before any construction can proceed. The Blanding Turtle Study is now complete, so the final report will be presented at the meeting. This will include recommendations arising from it.

The Link Between Kids Who Walk or Bike to School and Concentration
An article by Sarah Goodyear shows the academic benefit of children walking to school. A summary of the findings is given here: In 1969, 50 per cent of kids in the United States walked to school every day. In 2009 that number plummeted down to 13 per cent. Today, most parents are choosing to drive their kids to school because they perceive this choice as safer due to heavy car congestion, and more convenient despite shorter distances between home and school. But would this choice change if parents knew that having their kids walk or bike to school actually had tangible benefits (aside from exercise)? A Danish study released last year explains that there is a cognitive relationship between walking and cycling to school
and a students ability to concentrate. The study shows that active transportation can improve students academic performance and comprehension of their neighbourhood surroundings. Read the full article here
