DELPHOS St. Johns (19-7, 6-3 MAC)
bid good-bye to 10-year coach Dan Metzger
(120-110) after last season.
Along with him went 12 seniors who
graduated, including veterans such as speed-
ster Tanner Calvelage (.444 batting average,
5 doubles, 23 runs batted in, 27 runs scored,
29 stolen bases), Ryan Densel (.339 BA, 17
RBIs, 12 SBs) and Austin Reindel (.283 BA,
2 home runs, 15 RBIs, 14 runs), starters on
the 2011 state semifinal team, leaving first-
year head coach Ryan Warnecke and staff an
inexperienced crew.
The others that exhausted their eligibil-
ity in 2012 are Jordan Bergfeld (.260 BA,
18 runs, 11 RBIs), Alex Wehri, Austin Jost-
pille, Isaac Klausing (.308 BA, 10 runs; 4-1
mark, 2.07 earned run average, 40 2/3 innings
pitched), Cody Kundert (.269 BA, 19 runs,
14 RBIs; 6-1 record, 0.94 ERA, 44 2/3 IPs),
Kyle Neumeier, Dylan Krendl, Brice Schulte
Warnecke begins coaching career at St. Johns
and Josh Rode (.350 BA, 12 RBIs), helping
the team compile a .325 team batting aver-
age.
He does have four key returnees, all se-
niors: Curtis Geise (fourth year; pitcher/third
base/shortstop; .413 BA, 8 2Bs, 3 triples, 30
RBIs, 21 SBs; 5-5 mark, 1.78 ERA), Troy
Warnecke (third year; shortstop/third base;
.338 BA, 21 RBIs, 15 runs; 3-0, 1.84 ERA,
19 IPs), Ryan Buescher (third year; pitcher/
outfield/first base; .323 BA, 20 runs; 8 2/3
IPs) and Andrew Metzger (third year; pitch-
er/outfield; .257 BA).
The rest of the lineup will come from a
slew of inexperienced seniors and under-
classmen.
Although we graduated 12 seniors, we
are still a senior-dominated team. We return
four starters from last years team, giving us
a good foundation to build around and leader-
ship, Warnecke began. Our strengths will
be putting the ball in play and manufacturing
runs. We lose some of the team speed from
last year; however, we are fundamentally
sound at the plate and able to put the ball in
play. I expect us to be a small-ball offense
because of that and to be consistent with it
throughout the season.
Our weaknesses will be overcoming
inexperience at the varsity level and staying
consistent defensively.
The Jays committed 53 errors a year ago,
giving up 38 unearned runs and 45 earned.
Among the expected major newcomers
are the likes of senior Clay Courtney (out-
fielder), senior Craig Klausing (second base/
third base), senior Drew Wagner (outfielder/
pitcher/first base) and junior outfielder Ben
Wrasman.
As well, the rest of the expected varsity
roster has senior Andrew Grothouse (first
base), Aaron Beck (senior second baseman/
catcher), senior Dylan Stump (third base)

DELPHOS The St. Johns girls
track and field outfit only lost three seniors
from a year ago, so 7th-year head coach
Dave Desenberg has high expectations for
2013 on his Lady Blue Jays off a 3-4 dual-
record team.
He returns 12 letterwinners from the
2012 edition, led by fourth-year senior
Alyssa Faurot (sprints/high jump), senior
Bailie Hulihan (throws), classmate Am-
ber Cross (sprints), third-year junior Sa-
mantha Bonifas (MAC Award; hurdles/
sprints), third-year junior Maddie Burgei
(MAC Award; sprints), third-year junior
Megan Joseph (MAC Award; distance),
third-year junior Brooke Zuber (distance),
third-year junior Madison Kreeger (MAC;
discus/long jump), third-year junior Paige
Lucas (throws), junior Alicia Buettner
(MAC Award; discus/pole vault), sopho-
more Halie Benavidez (sprints) and class-
mate Rebekah Fischer (hurdles/sprints).
Desenberg has experienced Lady Jays for 2013
Our overall strengths lie
in the sprints, sprint
relays, the throws and
high jump. We need to
develop more consistency
in the middle distance
events and pole vault. If we
can stay healthy, we should
have a successful season.

DELPHOS The St. Johns boys track and field team was
relatively young last spring for head coach Dr. Jay DeWitt.
The Blue Jays ought to reap the rewards of 15 letterwinners
for the 10th-year mentor.
Senior Will Buettner (sprints/relays; 4th in the Division III
State 4x100-meter relay, Regional qualifier in the 4x4) is the top
returnee, along with junior State placer Luke MacLennan (4x1;
sprints/relays).
Three other Regional qualifiers are back: senior Mark Boggs
(4x400; middle distance/relays), senior Jake Hays (4x400; mid-
dle distance/relays) and Jared Knebel (4x400; middle distance/
relays).
Providing even more experienced depth are the likes of se-
nior Isaac Altenburger (middle distance/pole vault), senior Cole
Fischbach (distance), senior Ben Youngpeter (sprints/relays/long
jump), junior Aaron Hellman (distance), junior Nick Bockey
(sprints/relays), junior Eric Gerberick (sprints/relays/pole vault),
junior Nate Schroeder (throws), junior Quinn Wise (sprints/re-
lays), sophomore Nick Martz (sprints/relays) and classmate Tyler
Conley (middle distance/relays).
We have a strong junior and senior class this year and better
balance of middle distance, sprints, relays and throwers. Strengths

are sprints and relays; weakness is the jumping events,
DeWitt noted.
Of course, the early spring weather has not cooper-
ated for the coach and he also figures health is of the
utmost priority at this point.
Our goal is to continue to improve each and every
week and to avoid injury, he added. We have been
unable to get outdoors to practice much due to the un-
seasonable weather and look forward to the weather
breaking and getting some quality practice time in.
With the loss of four lettermen: Chris Will (State
placer in the 4x100 and fifth in 2011), David Linde-
man (State placer, 4x100), Adam Haunhorst and Ca-
leb Smith, DeWitt is looking forward to seeing prom-
ising newcomers like junior Spencer Ginter (throws
and freshman distance man Curtis Pohlman.
The rest of the Blue Jay roster for 2013 has: soph-
omores Brian Pohlman (sprints/relays/long jump),
and Austin Schulte (throws); and freshmen Derek An-
thony (throws/sprints/relays), Connor Britt (sprints/
relays), Trent Closson (throws), Draven Dickman
(sprints/relays), freshman Nick Foust (throws), Tyler
Ledyard (sprints/relays) and Evan Mohler (sprints/
relays).
Assistant coaches are Jack DeWitt, Tim Metzner,
Archie Metcalfe and Dan Hermiller.
The Jays open 2013 at Shawnee Tuesday, April 2.
and junior T.J. Hoersten (second base/first base/
pitcher).
It should be a fun and competitive year for
us. Although we may start out slow due to inex-
perience, we have talent that should enable us to
compete at a high level, Warnecke added.
We are capable of competing for a league ti-
tle if we stay fundamentally sound and dont beat
ourselves. We need to stay consistent on defense
and continue to be aggressive at the plate and on
the basepaths.
Mark Mansfield and Andy Vaske are assisting
Warnecke on the varsity; Derek Kill, Adam Smith
and Cory Bertling are the junior varsity coaches.
The junior varsity unit has junior Kyle Pohl-
man (second base), junior Andy May (second
base/outfield/pitcher), sophomores Gage Sef-
fernick (shortstop/second base/pitcher), Jorden
Boone (third base/second base), Austin Heiing
(outfielder/pitcher), and J.R. Keirns (catcher/
third base); and freshmen Owen Baldauf (catch-
er), Ryan Hellman (pitcher/shortstop/third base),
Jessee Ditto (first base/pitcher), freshman Bran-
don Slate (second base/third base) and Chad Et-
gen (outfielder).
Warnecke begins his varsity coaching career
on Monday, April 1, at home versus Wapako-
neta.
Warnecke Buettner Desenberg
(Continued from Page 2) (Continued from Page 4) (Continued from Page 3)
Junior Emilie Fischbach (sprints/long jump) lettered as a freshman but
was injured last spring.
Our overall strengths lie in the sprints, sprint relays, the throws and
high jump. We need to develop more consistency in the middle distance
events and pole vault, Desenberg noted. If we can stay healthy, we
should have a successful season.
Horrendous weather conditions in the month of March have pushed
our training schedule back a few weeks. However, our goal is to do well
in the months of May and June with a good showing at the Midwest Ath-
letic Conference championships and the post-season.
Gone from a year ago are the graduated Jessica Hammons (4 years;
hurdles), Courtney Grothouse (4th year; Academic All-MAC; pole vault,
400/800 meters) and veteran Kelsey Britt (Academic All-MAC; shot put/
discus).
Newcomers to the varsity are seniors Alyssa Gable (middle distance),
Stephanie Honigford (throws) and Brittany Kramer (throws); and fresh-
men Madelyn Buettner (hurdles/sprints), Sydney Fischbach (throws),
Bailey Kill (middle distance), promising newcomer Anna Mueller (dis-
tance), Ashlyn Troyer (sprints) and promising newcomer Erin Williams
(sprints/hurdles).
Our goal, as always, is to place high at the MAC meet; however, it
might be the toughest Division III league in the state, Desenberg added.
Last year, Versailles won the Division III State Championship and Min-
ster always has a tough team to go with its great tradition.
Assisting Desenberg are Dr. Jerry Burgei, Jeff Martin, Archie Met-
calfe, Tim Metcalfe and Tim Metzner.
The Lady Jays commence 2013 at Shawnee on Tuesday, April 2.

Jefferson varsity baseballers 2013
By JIM METCALFE
[email protected]
DELPHOS Jeffersons baseballers fin-
ished 10-14 a year ago, 4-5 in the Northwest
Conference, and were eliminated in the Divi-
sion III Sectional finals.
Third-year coach Doug Geary (23-24
record coming in) had to overcome the loss
of two key pitchers, one for the season, last
spring.
One, third-year senior Drew Kortokrax,
will return to be the ace of the staff as the
Wildcats hope to improve upon last springs
mark with seven returning lettermen, six of
them starters most of the season somewhere
in the lineup.
Kortokrax (unable to pitch in 2012 due
to an offseason shoulder injury; 36 innings
pitched in 2011, 3-3, 1.94 earned run average,
44 strikeouts, good for second-team All-NWC
honors; right/left field) will key the mound
core, backed up by veterans in third-year ju-
nior Ross Thompson (pitcher/shortstop; 23
IPs, 1-2, 3.35 ERA; .303 batting average, 15
runs, 15 runs batted in, 5 2Bs), main reliever
Zach Ricker (senior pitcher/third base/second
base; 24 IPs, 1-1, 3 saves, 3.21 ERA; .267
BA) and junior catcher/shortstop/pitcher Aus-
tin Jettinghoff (1-2, 5.00 ERA; .296 BA). Due
to an injury to potential sophomore starting
catcher Nick Fitch (rehabbing after shoulder
surgery this winter), Jettinghoff will likely see
most of the duties behind the plate.
As well, veteran senior Zach Kimmet
(first baseman/catcher) will also see time as
the backstop and veteran classmate Seth Wol-
lenhaupt (.234 BA, 10 runs, 10 walks; left/
right field) in the corner outfield spots.
The final letterman is lefty-swinging/
throwing senior Dylan Haehn (right/left field).
Even junior Jordan Herron (5 IPs; pitcher/
third base) will likely see some mound time.
We have a very coachable group thats
very motivated to improve individually and as
Kortokrax back to pace Jefferson baseball
a group, Geary noted. Pitching and offense
is adequate enough to win games; pitching
should actually be a strength, especially with
Drew and his ability to strike out batters.
Last years graduates include 3-year start-
ers in second-team All-NWC first baseman/
pitcher Curtis Miller (11 3/2 IPs, 1-3, 7.80
ERA, 20 strikeouts; limited by a shoulder in-
jury most of last spring; .328 BA, 4 doubles,
2 triples, 17 RBIs, 16 runs, 8 stolen bases),
shortstop/pitcher/outfielder Tony George (9
1/3 IPs, 1-1, 7.50 ERA; .286 BA, 17 runs,
10 SBs), catcher Justin Rode (12 walks) and
Jeff Schleeter (34 1/3 IPs, 3-3, 2.85 ERA);
2-year letterwinner and starting centerfielder
and pitcher Mike Joseph (29 2/3 IPs, 2-2,
1.89 ERA); and part-time starting outfielders
Evan Neubert and Kyle Anspach (9 BBs).
Where the offense batted .255 as a group
and the pitching yielded a 4.53 aggregate
ERA, it was the defense that struggled last
spring; last years crew committed 79 errors,
allowing 70 of the 144 runs scored against
them to be unearned.
Geary is looking forward to having a crew
of hungry varsity newcomers, such as senior
Tyler Wrasman (second and third base/short-
stop), senior Gage Townsend-Schleeter (left/
center field; moved from infield), likely start-
ing centerfielder Zavier Buzard (junior) and
junior Tyler Rice (pitcher/third base/first base).
Sophomore Gaige Rassman (outfield/
pitcher) is out with Tommy John surgery.
I dont see any change in the NWC this
year compared to 2012. It was a 3-team race
(Lima Central Catholic, Columbus Grove,
Crestview) then and will be the same this year
until somebody proves they can compete with
the top three, Geary added. If we can come
together as a team and play like were ca-
pable, we could work ourselves into that mix
and compete with everybody on our schedule.
Defense is the question mark for us.
Ultimately, itll come down to playing
solid baseball, doing the little things to win
close baseball games.
Assisting Geary on the varsity are Rusty
Thompson and Clay Erman.
The junior varsity squad, coached by
head man Jon Kroeger and assisted by Jordan
Jettinghoff, Jeff Stockwell and Todd Teman,
has sophomores Jesse Stemen, Kurt Wol-
lenhaupt, Carter Mox, Logan Pruett, Ryan
Bullinger and Tyler Talboom; and freshmen
Riley Claypool, Josh Teman, Adam Rode,

Jefferson boys varsity track and field team
By JIM METCALFE
[email protected]
DELPHOS The Jefferson boys
track team will have seven returning
seniors back for the 2013 season for
eighth-year head man Larry Bub
Lindeman.
That crew of Wildcats finished
fifth in the Northwest Conference last
spring.
The top Wildcat will be fourth-year
senior Cody Biglow (110- and 300-me-
ter hurdles, sprint relays; NWC cham-
pion in the 110s), a Division III State
qualifier in the 110 hurdles.
Nick Gallmeier (100- and 200-me-
ter dashes, sprint relays), another
fourth-year senior, was a District
champion and Regional qualifier in the
200-meter dash.
Fellow senior Chris Truesdale
(sprints, relays and pole vault) and ju-
nior Tyler Mox (sprints and relays)
were also members of the 4x200-meter
and 4x100-meter Regional finals teams
for the Wildcats.
Also returning are fourth-year se-
nior Jordan Barclay (sprints, hurdles,
relays and high jump), veteran senior
Evan Stant (shot put and discus), veter-
an senior Quentin Wessell (shot put and
discus) and fellow experienced 12th-
grader Austin Pruett (distance).
Promising newcomers including
Jordan McCann (sophomore sprints
and relays), Trevor Dudgeon (sopho-
more sprints and relays) and classmate
Derek Foust (sprints).
Only four lettermen graduated from
a year ago: Darren Edinger (3 years;
sprints, pole vault, relays), Marc Wol-
lenhaupt (2 years; sprints), Jared Boop
(throws) and Tyler Miller (middle dis-
tance, pole vault).
Our strengths should be in the
sprints, relays and hurdles. What we
need to work on is our the distance
and field events, Lindeman noted.
We have an experienced group of se-
niors and a good mix of underclassmen
to make us very competitive in most
sprint, relay and hurdling events. Cody
was a State qualifier in the 110 hurdles
and will also run lead leg in both sprint
relays. Nick was District champ in the
200-meter dash and is the anchor for
both relays.
We are very optimistic for this
season and the goal is to be running at
Jesse Owens (Stadium) in June.
The remainder of the varsity ros-
ter has seniors Zach Bland and Nick
Kuhlman; sophomores Chandler
Brantley, Cole Flack, Dominic Munoz,
Alex Redmon, Devin Van Dyke; and
freshmen Corbin Betz, Michael Cline,
Dalton Hicks, Dylan Hicks, Bryce
Lindeman, Skyler Mell, Zac Scirocco,
Conner Townsend, Drew Wannemach-
er, Anthony Whitaker, Kyle Williams
and Matt Schrader,
Jefferson commences the 2013
track and field season on Tuesday,
April 2, at the Allen East tri-meet.
Seniors headline Jefferson boys track
The 2013 edition of Jefferson boys track has, front from left, Chris Truesdale, Quinten Wes-
sell, Evan Stant, Zack Bland, Nick Gallmeier, Cody Biglow, Jordan Barclay and Austin Pruett;

2013 Jefferson girls softball team
Stober takes over Lady Cat softballers
The 2013 Jefferson fast-pitch softball team includes, row 1: Caitlin Landwehr, Kayla Kill,
Taylor Branham, Alexis Cook and Fallon VanDyke; row 2: Shayla Rice, Sophie Wilson,
Sam Branham, Sarah Thitoff, Kimber Kill and Halee Heising; row 3: head coach Josiah
Stober, Kamie Pulford, Kiersten Teman, Hannah Sensibaugh, Jasmine McDougall, Jessica
Pimpas, Claire Thompson, Brandy White and assistant coach Heather Brickner.
By JIM METCALFE
[email protected]
DELPHOS The Jefferson fast-pitch
softball unit ended up 4-16 in 2012 under head
coach Dave Wollenhaupt.
This years edition of Lady Wildcats will
be headed by Josiah Stober in his first varsity
softball coaching season.
Five starters return to help ease the first-
year coachs transition into the job.
The leader of the pack is fourth-year ace
pitcher Taylor Branham, along with third-year
senior Alexis Cook (infielder), third-year se-
nior centerfielder Fallon Van Dyke, third-year
junior Kimber Kill (outfielder) and sopho-
more Shayla Rice (infielder).
With that experience, Stober expects his
Red and White to be in the mix in games more
in the upcoming campaign.
We look to be competitive this year. We
have a good pitching core and a group of girls
that will be aggressive at the plate, Stober said.
He does have some holes to fill, the biggest
being 3-year starting catcher Cassidy Beving-
ton, along with 3-year starting shortstop Sa-
mantha Thitoff.
As well, other veterans chose not to go out
for softball in 2013.
We have a team with some inexperience
but a desire to get better and work hard at the
fundamentals, Stober continued.
With that in mind, the new coach will look
to a handful of promising newcomers to help
fill those voids: senior Kayla Kill (catcher/in-
fielder), junior Kamie Pulford (infielder), ju-
nior Hannah Sensibaugh (infielder) and fresh-
man Claire Thompson (pitcher/infielder).
Others vying for playing time on the var-
sity roster include senior Caitlin Landwehr
(infielder/outfielder); junior Jasmine McDou-
gall (infielder); sophomores Sarah Thitoff
(infielder) and Samantha Branham (catcher);
and freshmen Sophie Wilson (catcher/infield-
er), Bailey Gorman (outfielder), Halee Heis-
ing (outfielder), Claire Thompson (pitcher/
infielder), Brandy White (outfielder), Kier-
sten Temen (infielder) and Jessica Pimpas
(infielder).
Stober has no illusions as to what his crew
will be facing in 2013.
This will be another good year in the
conference. We have a lot of strong teams and
competition will be at its highest, he added.
Heather Brickner will serve as the assistant
coach.
Jefferson begins the Stober tenure on Tues-
day, April 2, at Van Wert.

DELPHOS Ryan Carder begins his sev-
enth year at the helm of the Jefferson girls
track and field team.
With only three performers gone from the
2012 edition that
came in fourth in
the Northwest Con-
ference, Carder has
enough veterans to
field a strong 2013
unit.
Of course, one of
the departures the
graduated Kennedy
Boggs only came in fifth in the Division III
State 400-meter dash; anchored the sixth-place
State-placing 4x200-meter relay; and qualified
for the State high jump.
Also gone via graduation is Stephanie Koe-
nig (distance), as well as another runner who
chose to not go out in 2013.
Back for an experienced but still very
young roster are fourth-year senior Chelsey
Bishop (hurdles/sprints/relays), third-year ju-
nior Brooke Teman (middle distance/relays;
part of that 4x2), third-year junior Rileigh
Stockwell (middle distance/relays; 4x2), third-
year junior Kenidi Ulm (middle distance/re-
lays), third-year junior Rebekah Geise (mid-
dle distance/relays), third-year junior Libbi
Brown (throws), second-year junior Makayla
Binkley (throws), sophomore Bethany Kaver-
man (throws), sophomore Heather Pohlman
(sprints) and sophomore Brooke Culp (sprints/
relays).
Promising newcomers include senior
Corinne Metzger (sprints/relays), freshman
Taylor Stroh (sprints/relays) and freshman
Brooke Gallmeier (sprints/relays).
This year, we are expecting to be very
competitive in a number of events
but the lack of depth will cause us
some problems in competing for to-
tal points in meets, Carter noted.
We have a great core of middle dis-
tance runners returning, as well as
our sprint relays.
We are looking for girls to im-
prove throughout the season and be
very competitive at the end of the
year to hopefully continue our suc-
cess at the district and regional lev-
els.
Jefferson opens the 2013 track
and field season on Tuesday, April 2,
at the Allen East tri-meet.

and thats just not our returning letter-
winners and starters. We have a good
group of sophomores that will challenge
our older players for their positions. Last
season, we had two of our starters out
all year, which hurt our team. We have
Derek Schimmoeller back and healthy.
Hopefully, we will be able to compete
now since he is back. He gives us that
little motivation.
Besides Schimmoeller (fourth-year

.286) and classmate Alex Horstman
(pitcher/infield/outfield; .235); and
sophomore Joel Beining (pitcher/in-
fielder; .345).
Junior Cory Honigford (outfield/in-
field) earned his letter off the bench last
spring.
Promising newcomers that Castron-
ova will rely on for varsity depth or
help in case of those dreaded injuries
include senior Zach Weber, sophomore
Kyle Bendele, sophomore Wes Mark-
ward, sophomore Brandon Boecker,
sophomore Trent Miller and classmate
Joe Von Oss.
Three freshmen comprise the re-
mainder of the roster: Jarrod Fanning,
Brendan Schnipke and Baily Seibert.
Our league is very competitive year
in and out. If we stay healthy, we should
be competitive in the league, he added.
Assistant coaches are Ty Wannem-
acher, Brad Honigford and Chris Kem-
per.

OTTOVILLE Ottoville head boys
track and field coach Ryan Horstman lost
eight seniors from last springs edition.
Five veteran seniors
are expected to help off-
set those losses as well
as others who chose not to
go out this year that were
expected to for the Big
Green.
Gone from a year ago are Greg Rue
(6th in the Division III State discus, quali-
fier in the high jump, 5th in Regional shot;
4 years), Seth Bendele (distance; 3 years),
Kevin Schnipke (throws/sprint relays; 3
years), Ross Honigford (throws, 3 years),
Sam Beining (hurdles/pole vault/sprints; 3
years), Jason Turnwald (distance/middle
distance/hurdles; 3 years), Eric Wannem-
acher (throws; 2 years) and Josh Schroeder
(throws/sprints; 2 years).
Expected to help the effort this spring
are letterwinning seniors Ryan Honigford
(middle distance), Logan Kortokrax (pole
vault/middle distance/sprints), Anthony
Eickholt (pole vault/hurdles/sprints),
Dylan Klima (pole vault/sprints) and Matt
Burgei (sprints/shot put/discus).
Other veterans back are junior Lucas
Maag (long jump/middle distance/sprints)
and sophomores Austin Honigford (mid-
dle distance/sprints/shot put) and Colin
Bendele (throws/sprints).
The rest of the crew has senior Austin
Meyer (sprints/long jump); juniors Jordan
Kelch (middle distance/sprints), Johnny
Landwehr (distance), Andy Horstman (dis-
tance), Ryan Kemper (long jump/distance)
and Tyler Winhover (throws); sophomore
Ryan Kimmet (distance); and freshmen
Drew Williams (middle distance/hurdles)

and Austin Montaro (sprints).
I believe we will be at our best in the
pole vault, shot, discus and middle dis-
tance with much improvement needed in
the other areas, 14th-year head coach
Ryan Horstman said. This is my small-
est team and its imperative for each indi-
vidual to cover three or four events at all
smaller meets. This should help to get the
most out of the few kids that are out.
I feel we will finish in the middle of
the pack in the PCL.

OTTOVILLE Ottoville only had one se-
nior on last springs 12-girl track and field unit.
Head coach Vaughn Horstman, beginning his
22nd season, should be primed to reap what he
sowed on that unit as the Lady Big Green embark
on 2013.
The lone veteran departure from last spring
was Division III State shot put qualifier Lauren
Kramer.
Seven veterans return, including fourth-year
senior Tammy Wannemacher (shot put/discus),
fourth-year senior Rachel Beining (shot put/dis-
cus), fourth-year senior Abby Siefker (middle dis-
tance), third-year junior Taylor Mangas (hurdles/

jump/long jump; currently rehabbing from knee
surgery), junior Monica Sarka (middle distance)
and classmate Kendra Eickholt (hurdles/sprints).

with some highlights in the middle distance
events and hurdles. We will be getting eight new
members in the best events to score points and

said. Overall, we should be a pretty young
team with more members to score more
points in the meets. Being able to field a

In the Putnam County League, it
comes down to Columbus Grove and Fort
Jennings, with the rest of the teams fight-
ing for third place.
Other members of the roster are senior

FORT JENNINGS Jeff Swick put together a 101-
112 record in 11 seasons at the helm of the Fort Jennings
baseball team.
He elected to spend more time fundraising and in-
creasing awareness of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, so
the reins of the Musketeer baseballers were handed over
to Eric Schwab.
Seven lettermen return from that 8-14 team of a year
ago, including 2-5 in the Putnam County League.
Included in that group are fourth-year senior pitcher/
infielder Kurt Warnecke, junior Alex Vetter (infielder), ju-
nior Ryan Rau (infielder/pitcher), junior Dylan Van Loo
(outfielder/pitcher), sophomore Mark Metzger (outfield-
er/catcher/pitcher), sophomore Connor Wallenhorst (out-
fielder/pitcher) and classmate Jared Hoersten (infielder/
outfielder/catcher).
Weve got leadership and we have a hard-working
group of players. We look to be competitive in the PCL
because of it, Schwab said.
Among the graduated players from 2012 are 6-6 south-
paw ace Cody Warnecke (outfielder; 4 years), catcher/first
sacker Nolan Neidert (4 years), right-hander
Troy Hellman (outfielder; 3 years), pitcher/
third baseman Nick Verhoff (3 years) and
catcher/first baseman Zach Schuerman.
Junior Bret Clay (infielder/pitcher) and
classmate Josh Wittler (catcher/outfielder/
pitcher) are two prime newcomers Schwab will
be relying on to take the places of those gone
from a year ago.
He also will take a close look at junior
Spencer Dray (outfielder/infielder) and Caleb
Bankey (outfielder); sophomores Collin Wieg-
ing (outfielder) and Ryan Koesters (outfielder/
pitcher); freshmen Alex Sealts (outfielder/in-
fielder/pitcher), Kyle Hellman (outfielder) and
Zach Finn (infielder).
Phil Snow is the assistant coach.
Fort Jennings commences the Schwab years
on Saturday, March 30, with a home double-
header versus Lima Senior.

FORT JENNINGS The Fort Jennings
track and field units have been around for 14
seasons under head coach Kevin Horstman.
He has 13 participants for the boys unit,
while the Lady Musketeers field a team of 27.
For the boys, senior Adam Kleman (middle
distance, distance) leads the returnees, along
with third-year junior Tyler Blankemeyer (dis-
tance), third-year junior Garrett Berelsman
(distance), third-year junior Logan Sickels
(distance) and sophomore hurdler Evan Rick-
er. That group helped lead a 15th-place finish
in the Division III Districts, sixth in the Put-
nam County League and a 2-53 mark in duals
and invitationals.
Notable losses include Adam Krietemeyer
(school record-holder in shot put and discus)
and 4-year letterwinners Tyler Wiedeman and
Aaron Schnipke.
However, with only five lettermen, there are
concerns for Horstman heading into the sea-
son.
We dont have a lot of overall depth; re-
turning only five varsity letterwinners is a con-
cern as well. Strengths are not apparent at this
time, Horstman said. We look to be a team
that improves as the season progresses and our
sophomores and freshmen mature.
My pick in the PCL is Columbus Grove.
The remainder roster has senior Allen Fisch-
bach (middle distance), junior Alex Ketcham
(throws), sophomore Tyler Ricker (distance),
freshman Austin Metzger (sprints), fresh-
man Dillon Schimmoeller (sprints), freshman
Drew Grone (hurdles) and classmate Alex
Berelsman (middle distance).
The Lady Musketeers return 11 letterwin-
ners, led by fourth-year senior Macy Schro-
eder (State semifinalist in 100- and 200-meter
dashes last spring), fourth-year senior Alaina
Maag (middle distance), fourth-year senior
Marissa Mesker (middle distance), fourth-year
senior Kaitlin Stechschulte (middle distance),
fourth-year senior Lori Bruskotter (sprints),
third-year senior Mara Brown (sprints and
jumps), senior Reanna Higginbotham (dis-
tance), senior Kristen Maag (throws), third-
year junior Emily Grone (teamed with Schro-
eder to finish 5th in state in the 1,600-meter
relay last season; hurdles), third-year junior
Stephanie Korte (sprints) and third-year junior
Alyssa Schimmoeller (distance).
They finished 29-52 in duals and invitation-
als, 55th at State, 16th at Regionals, seventh at
Districts and second in the PCL.
The only notable loss is 3-year letterwinner
Gina Clay (sprints).
Our weaknesses include the field events.
Strengths should be on the track, as no running
events appear weak, he added. We have high
expectations for the team this spring, hoping
to compete for the PCL title.
The favorite there should be Columbus
Grove.
Newcomers to the varsity roster include
seniors Jenna Von Sossan (distance) and Ka-
tie Schnipke (throws), juniors Emily Kehres
(throws), Min Metcalfe (sprints), Nicole Rick-
er (distance) and Kaylynn Noriega (sprints),
sophomores Keri Eickholt (hurdles), Lindsey
Trentman (hurdles), Alyssa Wiedeman (hur-
dles), Erin Osting (sprints) and Alexa Rode
(throws), freshmen Renee Kraner (distance),
Jenna German (sprints), Kylie Jettinghoff
(throws), Lydia Mesker (sprints) and Isabel
Wang (distance).
Assistants are Mike Knott and Ryan Kraner.
Jennings commences 2013 Tuesday, April
2, at the Elida tri-meet.
The 2013 Fort Jennings girls track team is comprised of Mara Brown, Lori Bruskotter, Elaina
Maag, Marissa Metzger, Katie Schnipke, Macy Schroeder, Kaitlin Stechschulte, Renna Higginbo-
tham, Jenna Von Sossan, Kristen Maag, Emily Grone, Emily Kehres, Stephanie Korte, Min Met-
calfe, Alyssa Schimmoeller, Nicole Ricker, Kaylynn Noriega, Keri Eickholt, Lindsey Trentman,

SPENCERVILLE Troy Mon-
tenery is back for his third season at
the helm of the Spencerville baseball
nine with a 24-24 mark (89-72 over-
all, including five seasons at Jeffer-
son).
He hopes to add wins to his total
with five returning starters from a 16-
11 edition of Bearcats (5-4 Northwest
Conference, tied for 4th place) that
lost to defending and eventual Divi-
sion IV State champion Minster in the
District semis.
Those returning starters include
fourth-year senior Joel Shimp (pitch-
er/first base; .326 batting average,
13 runs, 22 RBIs; 2-2, 2.46 ERA, 31
IPs), third-year senior Tanner Kover-
man (pitcher/third base; .259, 16 runs,
4 RBIs), third-year senior Danny
Settlemire (outfield/pitcher), third-
year junior Jonathan Shimp (pitcher/
infield; .228, 9 runs, 12 RBIs; 1-2,
9.64 ERA, 16 IPs) and veteran junior
James Schaad (outfield/pitcher; 8
runs, 6 RBIs).
Two others return as key contribu-
tors off last years bench: senior Sean
Monfort (infielder) and classmate
Dusty Settlemire (catcher; .250 BA,
5 runs).
However, Montenery must replace
a quartet of All-NWC selections that
completed their eligibility last spring:
Runner-up Player of the Year Matt
Youngpeter (pitcher/second base; 1st-
Team: .494 BA, 32 runs, 20 RBIs;
6-5, 2.49 ERA, 62 IPs, 71 Ks), first-
teamer Cory Rieman (shortstop; .404
Avg, 34 runs, 16 RBIs), Kasey Lee
(pitcher/outfield; Honorable Mention;
.346 BA, 16 runs, 22 RBIs; 6-1, 3.68
ERA, 38 IPs) and Jared Rex (catcher;
Honorable Mention; .364, 20 runs, 18
RBIs, 20 stolen bases).
Two of our strengths are hitting
fundamentals and team chemistry.
However, we have an inexperienced
pitching staff, the coach explained.
One goal we want to do is establish
program consistency. After breaking
a 19-year streak of losing records in
2012, the 2013 squad is eager to prove
that they can again post an above-.500
record and begin to maintain consis-
tency in the baseball program.
While not overpowering in any
one particular area, we hope to be
competent in all areas, resulting in
lots of competitive games.
To help do so, Montenery will
look to a foursome of promising
newcomers: freshmen David Wisher
(shortstop), Hunter French (pitcher/
outfield), pitcher Wyatt Krouskop
and Mitchell Youngpeter (outfield/
pitcher).
The remainder of the roster has
junior pitcher/infielder Aaron Crider,
junior infielder Jon Long, junior out-
fielder Brannon Rice, sophomore Ja-
son Rodrigues (outfield), sophomore
Red Wood (outfield), Damien Corso
(freshman outfielder), freshman Chris
Karch (catcher) and classmate Cody
Layman (outfielder).
My picks for the top NWC teams
in 2013 would include Lima Central
Catholic, Crestview and Columbus
Grove, in my opinion, he added.
Varsity assistant coaches are Jim
Fisher and Adam Kraning.
The Bearcats open Saturday,
March 30, by hosting Marion Local in
a doubleheader.

Lady Bearcats return boatload of State experience
By JIM METCALFE
[email protected]
OTTOVILLE Bruce McConnell has built up a strong track and
field program for Spencerville since his start in 1988.
Though he lost a pair of Division III State champions from the
girls team from a year ago, he still has seven Lady Bearcats that have
some experience in the ultimate meets throughout the seasons.
The Lady Bearcats are led by two State champions: their most
versatile athlete, third-year junior Karri Purdy (middle distance/high
jump/relays/sprints), State champion in the 4x400-meter relay, eighth
place in the State 4x200-meter relay and a State qualifier in the 2012
Cross Country Meet; and sophomore Kacie Mulholland (sprints; 4x4
champ and 8th in 4x2 relay).
Other performers with State experience in track include third-year
junior Jenna Kahle (hurdles/high jump; 2011 State qualifier 4x400 re-
lay) and third-year junior Caitlin Wurst (middle distance; 2011 State
qualifier 4x8).
Those with experience at the 2012 State Cross Country Meet are
third-year junior Tori Hardesty (distance; qualifier; 5th in the Re-
gional 4x8), sophomore Cierra Adams (distance; 6th in State Cross
Country; 5th in Regional 3,200 run, 5th in 4x8 Regional) and sopho-
more Schylar Miller (pole vault/hurdles/long jump; qualifier; 8th in
pole vault Regional).
The final four veterans are third-year senior Abby Freewalt
(throws; 2012 NWC Champion; 2-time Regional qualifier), third-
year junior Patricia Riley (pole vault/sprints), junior Beth Griffin
(throws) and sophomore Audrey Bowsher (throws).
The rest of the roster has junior Mary Clayton (throws); top
newcomers Katie Merriman (sophomore sprints/shot put) and fresh-
men Jaycee Grigsby (high jump/long jump/hurdles), Kaylee Davis
(middle distance) and Kennedy Sharp (middle distance); sophomore
Megan Miller (sprints/discus) and freshmen Taylor Koenig (throws).
The newcomers will have to replace major losses in State Cham-
pions Cortney Miller and Kelli Ley (4x4), along with Jenny Post,
Alexa Brown, Mackenzie Miller, Morgan Pugh and Shanna German.
We lost a lot of speed from the 2012 graduates but return seven
girls who have competed at the State level in either cross country or
track, McConnell said. Well need everyone to contribute to defend
last years titles.
Northwest Conference favorites are Columbus Grove, Bluffton
and Allen East.
On the boys side, fourth-year senior Lucas Shumate is the lone
State qualifier back (discus). Third-year junior Anthony Schuh (hur-
dles) was a Regional qualifier.
Three seniors are returning from injuries: fourth-year senior Derek
Goecke (sprints), fourth-year senior Keith Lenhart (distance; missed
last 2 years with injuries) and third-year senior Joe Wisher (distance).

Goecke, Jermiah Campbell and Jason Maag. Absent is Cody Fast. (Delphos Herald/Jim Metcalfe)
Four sophomores are back for another go-round:
Cole Bellows (sprints), Chance Campbell (sprints), frosh
MVP Trevor McMichael (middle distance/jumps) and
Logan Vandemark (throws).
The rest of the Bearcat boys varsity are seniors Cody
Fast (hurdles), Lucas Krouskop (throws) and Bryce
Ringwald (throws); juniors Jermiah Campbell (throws),
Gabe Davisson (throws), Matthew Hurles (distance),
Colton Miller (sprints/jumps) and Tyler Reyn-
olds (throws), sophomores Grant Goecke
(middle distance), Eli Hawk (throws) and
Jason Maag (middle distance); and freshmen
Zach Goecke (jumps/sprints), Mason Nourse
(jumps/sprints) and Evan Pugh (throws/
sprints).
First of all, everyone has to stay healthy,
McConnell added. As always, how quickly
the younger kids develop and gain confidence
will determine the success of our team and the
goal of winning the conference.

SPENCERVILLE The Spencerville
fast-pitch softball crew finished 4-15 in 2012
under head coach Tom Wegesin, ended by a
Division IV sectional loss.
That included a 2-7 mark in the Northwest
Conference.
This years crew of Lady Bearcats will be
headed by Jeff Johnston in his first season of
varsity softball coaching.
He will have a whole squadful of veterans
11 to be exact to help ease the transition.
Eight of them are starters.
That group is headed by second-team all-
NWC senior shortstop Alyssa Mulholland
(2nd team All-NWC; .443 batting average,
17 runs scored), junior pitcher/third sacker
Tori Johnston (honorable-mention NWC;
.450 BA, 11 doubles, 2 home runs, 18 runs
batted in) and junior catcher/outfielder Ha-
leigh Mull (honorable mention; .381 BA, 9
2Bs, 13 RBIs).
Also back to starting spots are seniors in
first baseman/outfielder Shelby Mulhol-
land (9 runs), second sacker Alli Gilroy) and
pitcher/outfielder Hanna Keller, sophomore
Mackenzie Ringwald (shortstop/outfielder)
and classmate Maddy Hollar (second base/
outfielder; 7 runs).
Three others earned quality time last
spring: senior outfielders Jennifer Burnett,
Abbie Lee and Haley Calvelage.
We have a lot of returning letterwinners
with a lot of game experience. We should be
a much improved team this year, Johnston
said. Im very pleased with the effort and
enthusiasm at practice so far. We have a re-
ally hard-working group of girls, led by those
three 2012 All-NWC players. Competition
for starting positions amongst our returning
seniors and underclassmen should produce
a much stronger product on the field this
spring.
As well, Johnston is excited about four
promising newcomers: sophomore Amber
Hallard (outfield) and freshmen Alex Shu-
mate (pitcher/outfield), Caitlyn Propst (first
base/outfield) and Jalyn Picklsimer (outfield).
Sophomore Amanda Crider is out with a
torn ACL.
Johnston knows his team has a ways to go.
Consistency at the plate and improving
overall team speed will be our number one
focus; we need to have more quality at-bats,
get runners on base and then be able to move
them around and score. Our pitching should
be more consistent this year with Tori and
Alex expected to toe the rubber most nights;
Haleigh and Hanna will serve as solid arms
coming out of the bullpen as well, he added.
Our infield should be solid defensively with
Alyssa, Shelby, Mackenzie, Maddy, Alli and
Caitlyn, as well as add some pop to our lineup
in 2013. In the outfield, Abbie, Jenny, Haley,
Amber and Jalyn will use their speed to track
down everything in the air.
Of course, we would like to be competi-
tive every night and finish at the top of the
NWC. Coming off of a 2-7 league record
in 2012, we will have our work cut out for
us but we are extremely excited to face the
challenge. Crestview looks like they will be
very good again this year, as does Columbus
Grove and Lincolnview. Overall, I think the
NWC will be very solid from top to bottom.
This should be a very fun spring.
Assistant coaches are Ed Shumate, Lori
Schwartz and Randy Taylor.
A doubleheader at Perry on Saturday,
March 30, begins the Johnston tenure.

RURAL MIDDLE POINT The Lin-
colnview baseballers ended 2013 with a 7-15
mark (1-7 in the Northwest
Conference) for then-coach
Brad Mendenhall.
Now that he has moved
on, its up to Kevin Long-
streth to turn things around
in 2013.
He will have six re-
turning starters back to do just that, led by
All-NWC second-teamer Nick Leeth (senior),
Kyle Williams (junior; NWC Honorable-Men-
tion), Conner McCleery (6-3, 215-pound ju-
nior), Dalton Kayser (junior), Derek Friesner
(junior) and Eli Farmer (6-3 junior), as well as
letterwinning senior Troy Patterson.
That crew will feature a small-ball offen-
sive attack, according to the new coach.
We are going to be a station-to-station
team offensively, with more quickness than in
prior years. We will have to bunt guys over, hit
them over and drive them in, Longstreth not-
ed. We hope to use our team speed on offense
and defense to our advantage.
On defense, we have positions to fill be-
hind the plate, at first and in the outfield. We
need to find a handful of guys who can be
consistent on the mound and a defense that
can continually make routine plays. We have a
large number of underclassmen coming in that
we plan for them to compete for varsity posi-
tions.
With the departure of starters Clayton
Longstreth, Brady Niese and Mike Klausing,
Longstreth will rely on a quartet of promising
newcomers: freshmen Tyler Richey and Derek
Youtsey, Jalen Roberts and Austin Leeth.

As far as the league, we hope to be at the

We have areas for improvement and
plan to take the right steps to get there.

RURAL MIDDLE POINT Kent Mc-
Clure has a 2-year record of 21-21 as the
Lincolnview fast-pitch softball coach, in-
cluding 11-9 a year ago.
A total of seven starters are back from
that edition of Lady Lancers in hopes of
producing more wins this spring.
Back for another go-round are senior
centerfielder Jodie Doner, fourth-year
starting catcher Lauren Calvert, junior
Ashley McClure, Kelsey Mohr (3-year
starter at third base), Macey Ashbaugh (ju-
nior first baseman/outfielder/designated
hitter), sophomore shortstop Bailey Neate
and sophomore Devann Springer (outfield-
er).
As well, five more veterans from 2012
are back to help the effort: senior infielder
Kaitlyn Brant (off a knee injury in 2012),
senior relief pitcher Courtney Gorman,
sophomore Julia Thatcher (outfielder/in-
fielder), Kendra Fraker (first base/catcher)
and Britney Foust (relief pitcher).
Pitching should be a strength, led by
3-year starting pitcher Ashley McClure.
As well, two of our top three hitters are
back in Doner (led the team in steals) and
Springer, McClure noted. Our weak-
nesses are intensity, staying in and finish-
ing games.
Promising newcomers such as speed-
ster Autumn Proctor (freshman infielder),
potential power hitter Mikenna Klinger
(freshman infielder) and freshman out-
fielder Hanna Taylor will be relied on to
replace the graduated Carley Springer,
Morgan Peel and Holly Diller.

Lancer track and field ready for strong spring

RURAL MIDDLE POINT The Lincolnview boys track team
placed sixth in the Northwest Conference last season and the Lady
Lancers took ninth.
Both teams will figure to improve from those marks in 2013, how-
ever, with lots of talent returning for head coach Matt Langdon.
Each team returns a district qualifier from last season, Senior
long jumper Austin Treesh on the boys side and senior sprinter Kay-
lee Thatcher on the girls side. Thatcher qualified for regionals in the
100-meter hurdles last season.
Sophomore Bayley Tow (distance), senior Jeff Jacomet, junior Ben
Bilimek and senior Brooks Ludwig are the top returning scorers for the
boys team, along with Treesh.
Along with Thatcher, the Lady Lancers return sophomore Hannah
McCleery and seniors Haley McAbee, Taylor Miller and Crystal Prots-
man.
We are excited about a pair of newcomers to the boys team: fresh-
man Hunter Blankenmeyer, who was undefeated in the high hurdles
last season, and senior Kade Carey, a baseball transfer who should im-
mediately help the team in jumping events, as well as sprints, Langdon
said.
Freshman Anna Gorman is new to the Lady Lancers after being the
top runner for the cross country team last fall.
The Lancer boys will have to deal with the losses of Sloan Whitaker
and Brandon Jacomet, each of whom were in the top five last season
in scoring. Whitaker qualified for regionals in 2012 in the long jump.
Karissa Burns and Kerri Grothaus are the key losses for the Lady
Lancers, both also in the top five on the team in scoring. Burns and
Grothaus were key distance runners last season and will leave a void
there for the 2013 team to fill.
Langdon expects distance to be a strength of the boys team.
We should have a strong core of distance runners based on this
years cross country season. The team placed fifth in the regional meet
and most of those boys run track, explained Langdon. The boys
should have a great deal of balance. We have strong individuals in the
distance events, jumps and hurdles. We should also be able to score
points in the sprints, relays and throws. The boys team has nice depth,
so that should help as the season progresses.
The Lancer boys have a solid roster of 34 this spring.
On the girls side, Langdon points to the sprints and hurdles as team
strengths.
We have depth and strength in the sprints and hurdles; most of our
tournament experience comes from those two areas. We should also be
able to score points in the distance events and jumps, added Langdon.
The girls roster features 20 competitors.
A stat that is impressive about both teams is the 16 combined seniors,
which Langdon said will help the team a great deal.
Both teams have a large number of seniors and those seniors have
already proven to be excellent leaders. This should prove to be one of
our greatest strengths; we have strong leadership and kids who know
what it takes to be successful, he continued.
The weakness of the boys team figure to be in the field events, ex-
plained Langdon.
The boys need to replace points in the throws and jumps; we lost
several top sprinters but hopefully our underclassmen will step up. We
Lincolnviews girls track for the upcoming spring has, front from left, Hannah Mc-
Cleery, Mikinzie Dull, Sarah Cowling, Anna Gorman, Sarah Harris and Haley McA-
bee; second row: Maranda Bigham, Rhya (Fern) Vongvichien, Grace Gorman, Crystal
Protsman, Christine Stemen, Savannah Bigham and Danielle Dasher; and back: head
coach Matt Langdon, Brittany ODaffer, Ashton Bowersock, Courtney Wendel, Kay-
lee Thatcher, Taylor Miller, Alyssa Matthews and assistant coaches Curtis Miller and
Ben Cowan. (Delphos Herald/Heather Pohlman Photography)
have sustained some key injuries over the winter, so
that may impact how we start the season, he said.
On the girls side, it is all about staying healthy.
The girls will need to find balance in all events
and stay healthy, as they do not have the same depth
as the boys team, continued Langdon.
The Lancer coach said that each team is worrying
about itself this early in the season and will have
a better feel for how it stacks up once the season
starts.
Overall, the optimism is high for both teams,
rightfully so.
This years team has gotten off to s great start.
They are working extremely hard and have already
spent a lot of time in the off-season preparing,
Langdon added. We have had several athletes com-
peting in the indoor season, including Bayley, who
has run a 9:49 3,200 meters.
The work ethic and attitude of the team so far
has been outstanding. They want to improve and as
a result are doing everything the coaching staff is
asking of them.
The Lancer teams open the season on Tuesday,
April 9, when they host Crestview and Ottoville.

King hopes to move above .500 in 2013
By JIM METCALFE

COLUMBUS GROVE Colum-
bus Grove baseball coach Cory King
had a pretty good baseball club in 2012,
finishing 17-9 a year ago including a
7-2 Northwest Conference ending (3rd)
and a 3-4 slate in the Putnam County
League (5th) that ended with a loss
to Cory-Rawson in the Division IV sec-
tionals.
King begins his 11th season with
a 124-131 mark and hopes to have
another unit like last to move above
.500.
He has a large number 10 of
returning lettermen back to do just
that.
Offensive production should be the
backbone of our 2013 season. With 10
returning lettermen, we should have
strong leadership and depth at most po-
sitions, King said.
That experience includes fourth-
year senior Matt Jay (catcher/pitcher/
third base); third-year senior Brandon
Benroth (second base/catcher/third
base), third-year senior Blake Hoff-
man (outfield/shortstop/pitcher), third-
year Trey Roney (third base/pitcher/
first base) and third-year senior Brady
Shafer (outfield/pitcher); and second-
year guys in senior Kody Griffith (first
base), senior Clay Diller (second base),
senior Trent Vorst (infielder), junior
Riley Brubaker (outfield/pitcher) and
classmate Joshua Verhoff (pitcher/in-
field).
What we need to work on is con-
sistency each and every at-bat, both
offensively and defensively. The
pitching staff needs to throw strikes
and allow the defense to make plays,
King continued.
Promising newcomers for the Bull-
dogs include Mason Smith (junior
outfield/first base/pitcher), sophomore
Elisha Jones (third base/pitcher) and
freshman Logan Diller (pitcher/short-
stop/catcher).
That trio will have to help offset the
graduations of 3-year varsity player
Zach Barrientes (shortstop/pitcher),
2-year player Aaron Vorst (pitcher/out-
field) and letterwinner Connor Schro-
eder).
We look to continue our summer
success of qualifying for the district

season and look to compete for the
championship title of both the NWC

COLUMBUS GROVE The Co-
lumbus Grove fast-pitch softball crew
made it to last springs Division IV
District semifinals before seeing its sea-
son end at 17-11 with a loss to Parkway.
That unit of Lady Bulldogs grabbed
first in the Putnam County League (5-1)
and third in the Northwest Conference
(6-3).
Third-year head coach Brian Schro-
eder brings a 31-21 mark into 2013,
along with eight veterans back from last
spring.
One of those is fourth-year senior
lefty-swinging Haley Grigsby (out-
field), along with third-year senior
right-hander and ace Bobbi Heckel.
Four more are juniors: Micah Stech-
schulte (outfield; third year), lefty-
swinging Deanna Kleman (outfield;
third year), Katie Roose (catcher/short-
stop; third year) and second-year Kara
Birkemeier (first base).
The other two experienced hands are
10th-graders: Hope Schroeder (third
base/pitcher) and Brianna Glass (second
base).
Schroeder has only a trio of gradu-
ates to replace: a second-teamer in the
NWC/PCL in Cece Utendorf (4 years),
a first-teamer in both leagues in Kate-
lyn Scott (3 years) and PCL Honorable-
Mention honoree in Ashley Langhals (2
years).
We lost three of our starting infield-
ers from last years squad, so shoring
up our infield is a priority, Schroeder
explained. There are several players
fighting for multiple positions; they
need to continue to compete and work
hard every day if we want to try to rep-
licate our performance from last year.
One player that Schroeder will rely
on to off-set those losses is promising
newcomer Monica Delgado (sopho-
more third base/catcher).
We have those eight returning let-
terwinners from last years squad, so
I am hoping that experience will carry
over into this year. As long as we con-
tinue to work hard and maintain the
proper focus, we should be competitive
in both the PCL and NWC, the coach
added.

COLUMBUS GROVE Columbus
Grove boys track and field coach Chris
Grothaus fielded a winning unit in 2012,
grabbing both the Northwest Confer-
ence and Putnam County League titles.
That group of Bulldogs also had a
bevy of state placers/qualifiers in his
eighth season at the helm.
Four of those are back in 2013, led by
195-pound senior Dakota Vogt (high jump;
third in the Division III State discus), 6-3,
210-pound senior Derek Rieman (4th at
State in 110 hurdles; relays), senior Collin
Grothaus (7th at State Pole Vault; hurdles
and relays) and classmate Jake Graham
(9th at State in 3,200 run; relays).
Ten other lettermen are back from
2012: senior Jacob Roebke (discus),
senior Troy Meyer (distance), senior
Alex Shafer (distance), 6-4 senior Nick
Schmiesing (800 dash), 245-pound se-
nior Trevor Schroeder (shot/discus),
junior sprinter Alec Gladwell, Brandon
Cotrell (sophomore pole vault/sprints),
Joey Warneke (sophomore pole vault/re-
lays), David Martin (sophomore sprints/
relays) and classmate Colton Grothaus
(distance/relays).
We have an experienced senior
class with four state qualifiers return-
ing, Grothaus said. We should have
great depth in distance races and should
also be strong in pole vault, hurdles and
throws. Our relay teams should be much
improved this season.
Key lettermen lost from last year
include state placer in Caleb Grothaus
(5th at State in long jump), state quali-
fier in 2012 and state champion in 2011
in the pole vault in Tyler Wolfe, along
with Wade Heffner (400) and Jeff Birke-
meier (long jump).
We need to find long jumpers to
replace last years guys. We must get
healthy and stay healthy in order to win
the NWC and make a post-season run,
he continued.
Amongst those Grothaus will turn
to in order to answer those questions
include promising newcomers such as
David Bogart (sophomore intermediate
distance), Bailey Clement (freshman
high jump), Gabe Stechschulte (fresh-
man jumps) and Austin Price (freshman
long jump/sprints).
Once again, we hope our depth can
carry us to league titles. Our field events
and distance runners are our strength,
he added. We should have two good
senior hurdlers and our relays should be
improved.
In the NWC, look for the traditional
powers Spencerville and Bluffton to
compete for the league title. Lima Cen-
tral Catholic has some great sprinters,
jumpers and relays and can score a lot
of points with their tremendous athletes.
We look to try to defend our title.
In the PCL, we look to use our depth
to defend our championship.

wolf, Caleb Arthur and Jason Jay.

should not be a problem. Our strengths will be
the throws, hurdles and sprint relays. The
competition in the throws will be very tight. We

COLUMBUS GROVE Columbus
Grove girls track and field coach Tim Staley
had a pretty good team last spring, grabbing
the top spot in the Putnam County League
and ending up third in the Northwest Con-
ference.
With 17 returning letterwinners all
but three sophomores and juniors from
that team and a boatload of other performers
ready to go, Staley anticipates a pretty good
spring in 2013.
Leading the letterwinners are the likes
of Division III Regional qualifiers in senior
Jessi Smith (4x100-meter relay; hurdles/
relays), sophomore Sydney McCluer (4x1
and 4x2; hurdles/relays), sophomore Sarah
Schroeder (4x1 and 4x2; sprints/relays),
sophomore Annie Schramm (discus; throws)
and classmate Danielle Schramm (shot put;
throws).
Junior Megan Verhoff (throws) was the
NWC champ in the discus.
Also back are seniors Melissa Amstutz
(distance) and Cassie Stechschulte (high
jump); juniors Aubrey Fruchey (throws),
Stacy Hovest (distance), Meghan Schroeder
(long jump/sprints), Sydni Smith (hurdles)
and Julia Wynn (sprints/relays); and soph-
omores Becca Endicott (throws), Megan
Langhals (distance), Alexis Ricker (dis-
tance) and Kristin Wynn (sprints).
Others that will seek to score points for
the Lady Bulldogs are seniors Sienna Ger-
deman (distance), Quincy Miller (distance),
Taylor Windau (throws) and Lindsay Wurth
(sprints); juniors Lindsay Langhals (dis-
tance) and Brooke Schnipke (distance); and
a bevy of freshmen: Kenzie Bame (pole
vault), Mackenzie Clymer (hurdles), Ly-
nea Diller (throws), Raiya Flores (sprints),
Lindsey Malsam (distance), Morgan Messer
(distance), Mikayla Roman (throws), Robyn
Schumacher (throws), Linnea Stephens
(sprints/long jump) and Madison Vorhees
(sprints/high jump).
With the good numbers we have, depth
should not be a problem. Our strengths will
be the throws, hurdles and sprint relays,
Staley explained. The competition in the
throws will be very tight. We are looking
to improve our distance times and develop
sprinters. We look for our seniors and re-
gional qualifiers to show leadership in prac-
tice. Our sophomores and freshmen are big
classes with a lot of talent.
We hope to contend for the NWC and
PCL titles. Spencerville will be the favorite
in the NWC. Fort Jennings should be at the
top of the PCL along with Ottoville.
Assisting Staley are Connie Arthur, Mike
Brodwolf and Rick Maag.
Grove hosts its own quad on Tuesday,
April 2, to start 2013.

Grapner back for sophomore coaching season at Elida
By JIM METCALFE
[email protected]
ELIDA Todd Grapner finished his first season at the helm
of the Elida varsity baseball program with a 9-16 mark.
Six returning starters hope to make things a lot easier for him
in his sophomore coaching campaign.
Back for another go-round as front-liners are Jake Porter (se-
nior outfield/pitcher), David Diller (senior infield/pitcher), Ian
Haidle (senior catcher/infield/pitcher), Nickoli Sackinger (se-
nior infield), Jesse Wheeler (senior outfield) and Adam Purdy
(sophomore outfield/pitcher).
Drew Laing (senior infield) is also back as a lettermen from
2012.
Overall, one of our strengths should be the depth of our
pitching staff. The second is our team speed, which should help
us a lot offensively, Grapner noted. We return six starters and
most of our pitching staff. Pitching and the ability to make plays
defensively will be vital to our success this season. We feel that
we have a chance to be competitive as our younger guys gain
experience.
Those new guys that Grapner was referring to include
promising newcomers Josh Carder (senior outfielder), Max St-
ambaugh (junior infielder/pitcher), Riley Overholt (junior in-
fielder), Logan Frysinger (junior outfielder), Kyle Hambleton
(junior infielder/pitcher), Justin Murphy (junior outfielder) and
Travis Watkins (sophomore catcher/pitcher).
They will play key roles in replacing two lost starters in first-
team All-WBLer Mackenzie Hampshire and second-teamer
Dalton Martz.
Two of our weaknesses will be inexperience at key posi-
tions which should be taken care of as we gain playing time
and team power, Grapner added. The Western Buckeye
League is loaded with quality pitchers this year with 4-5 Divi-
sion I pitching prospects.
We will have to play our best night in and night out to finish
in the top half of the league.
Three others will be in the varsity mix: junior Chris Groh
(catcher/infielder), junior Alan Tyrrell (infielder) and sopho-
more infielder/pitcher Jared Blymyer.
Randy Prince is the assistant coach.
Elida entertains Fort Jennings on Monday, April 1, to com-
mence the 2013 diamond season.
The 2013 Elida varsity baseball team has, front from left, Adam Purdy, Travis Watkins, Riley Overholt, Jus-
tin Murphy and Chris Groh; middle row, head coach Todd Grapner, Logan Frysinger, Max Stambaugh, Alan
Tyrrell, Jared Blymyer, Kyle Hambelton and assistant coach Randy Prince; and back row, Jesse Wheeler, Drew
Laing, Nickoli Sackinger, David Diller, Josh Carder and Ian Haidle. Absent is Jake Porter. (Delphos Herald/

ELIDA The Elida fast-pitch soft-
ball unit finished 7-17 in 2012 for fourth-
year head man Mike Eilerman.
With what he hopes is a lucky number
of seven starters back, the Lady Bulldogs
hope for bigger and better results in
2013.
Back for another go-round are senior
ace/first baseman
Aryanna Brown (2-
4, 4.17 earned run
average, 40 1/3 in-
nings pitched), se-
nior outfielder Er-
icka Smith (.245
batting average),
Erika Kiel (junior
second sacker), Caitie Shroyer (junior
pitcher/first base/third base; 5-12, 7.33
ERA, 105 IPs; .295 BA, 12 runs batted
in), Sabrina Kline (sophomore shortstop;
.342 BA, 29 RBIs, 5 home runs), sopho-
more catcher Jenna Halpern (.277 BA,
2 triples) and sophomore lefty-swinging
outfielder Taylor Thompson.
As well, senior outfielder Tanesha
Manley lettered a year ago.
We will have some pitching depth
with Brown (injured most of last season),
Caitie and freshman Michaela Black. We
also should be a pretty good hitting team
and I think overall team speed will also be
a plus, Eilerman said.
With the graduations of letterwinners
Jenn Eilerman (.410 BA, 5 doubles, 12
RBIs), Alex Hambleton (11 RBIs) and
Jess Guerrero (.250 BA, 6 doubles, 10
RBIs), Eilerman will rely on promising
newcomers such as Black (pitcher/third
sacker) and sophomore lefty-swinging
Cathy Jenks (first base/outfielder).

niors on a varsity roster of 14, this crew of
Lady Dawgs will deal with some youth
in the coming season.
We are young over 3/4 of our var-
sity and junior varsity roster is composed
of sophomores and freshman. Also, we
need to improve our defense; that was a
weakness of ours last season, Eilerman
added. Despite being a young team, we
do have some strong senior leadership,
which should help.
I think if we can stay healthy, which
has been a problem in the past, we should
be able to compete in the always-tough
Western Buckeye League.
The remainder of the varsity crew has
injured sophomore Abby Fromm, sopho-
more second baseman/outfielder Brett
Pauff, sophomore outfielder McKenzie
Riggs and freshman outfielder Kylee
Makin.
The JV roster has sophomores Paige

ELIDA Elida boys track and field
coach F. Kevin Bowers will have a boatload
of performers to choose from in the 2013
spring.
With a total of 38 student-athletes on
the varsity roster: 12 seniors, four juniors,
13 sophomores and nine freshmen; Bowers
hopes that his Division II squad will improve
upon last springs sixth-place finish in the
Western Buckeye League.
That group also finished fifth in the Dis-
trict competition.
This edition of Bulldogs will be built
around eight key veterans: senior sprinter
Deshea Hughes, senior Mitch Knotts (fin-
ished first in the WBL pole vault and school
record-holder), senior Austine Onwueg-
buchu (sprints/relays; 1st in the 4x100 in
WBL), senior Nick Pauff (sprints/relays/
pole vault; 1st in 4x100/4x200/4x400 in
WBL meet), senior Quentin Poling (shot put/
discus/sprints; 1st 4x200/4x400 in the WBL
- 5th in the Regional), Kevin Russell (senior
hurdler) and classmate Anthony Sumpter
(sprints/relays; 1st in 4x100 in WBL) and
sophomore Clark Etzler (sprints/800/field
events).

Brenneman, Theran Carroll, Michael Lee,
Jeremy Newby, Chris Radebaugh, who took
a combined 21 varsity letters with them.
What we should be good at are relays,
sprints, field events and pole vault. We must
work every day to improve on the areas of
interest, which is everything to improve as a
team, he added.
Assistant coaches include Gary Evans,
involved in the sport for 40-plus years; and
Al Clum.
Elida begins the upcoming campaign

Melisa Schultz,

Schultz heading up Lady Dawg tracksters
By JIM METCALFE
[email protected]
ELIDA Melissa Schultz was a middle school
track and field coach for the previous four years at El-
ida.
She moved up a little bit in 2013, taking over the
head girls varsity coaching reins from former coach Mi-
chelle Cahill.
She inherits a very inexperienced crew as only three
letterwinners are back: senior Rachel Foust (shot put/
discus), senior Erin Kesler (long jump/100-meter dash/
relays) and sophomore Aubrey Williams (100 me-
ters/200 meters/relays).
Amongst the promising newcomers are freshman
Tori Bowen (pole vault), freshman Jalisha Henry
(100 meters/200 meters) and freshman Sarah Suever
(4x800-meter relay/800 meters/1,600 meters).
We are working together well as a team. With many
of our athletes being new this year, we are building the
team and working well together, Schultz noted. With
about 60 percent of the team being new to the high-
school level of this sport or completely new to it, we are
getting used to the higher-level demands of the sport.
Right now, we are evaluating where we are at
and preparing hard for the season. If we can develop
the right work ethic from the start, we can have a suc-
cessful season.
The remainder of the Lady Dawg roster has se-
niors Adrienne Harmon and Khiarea Deshazer, ju-
niors Rachel Kerber, Hailey Hurst, Kaiti Hinegardner
and Mercedes Barnett, sophomores Samantha Page,
Whitney Moneer, Lauren Huffer and Courtney Hon-
cell, freshmen XZation Woods, Helena Van Sickle,
Alyssa Turrentine, Megan Tracy, Savana Sligh, Karissa
McLaurine, Hannah Malone, Bailee Kuhn, Keely Kipp,

KALIDA Long-time Kalida base-
ball mentor Jim McBride had a very expe-
rienced and senior-laden crew last spring
that finished as Putnam County League co-
champions (6-1) and went 14-9 overall.
He enters this season with a 345-245
career mark with a far-less veteran team as
only three lettermen are back for 2012.
This seasons baseball version of Wild-
cats will build around
third-year senior Neil
Recker (2nd-team all-
Putnam County League
catcher; .397 batting av-
erage, 17 stolen bases, 8
runs batted in), second-
year senior first sacker
Rob Kleman (6-4, 230) and second-year
junior Kyle Kehres (pitcher/infielder).
This preseason has shown the coaching
staff a good work ethic. I am also impressed
with the talent level in the freshman class,
McBride noted.
With the departures of the likes of 4-year
varsity letterwinners in Paul Utendorf (1st-
team Putnam County League; pitcher/out-
fielder) and Nick Guisinger (1st-team
PCL; pitcher/outfielder); 3-year guys Jor-
dan Laudick (pitcher/infielder) and 6-5

and Eric Kahle (infielder) that took 32
varsity letters with them, the Wildcats
Members of the Kalida varsity baseball team (front row, from left) are Neil Recker, Kyle Kehres, Andrew Krouse and Brent

chief among them the mound staff.
We have inexperience at most posi-
tions, McBride continued. For us to
be successful this year, we need our pitch-
ers and defense to raise their level of play
to compete with the teams on our sched-
ule.
McBride does have more than a few
newcomers as options for the new season,
amongst them are seniors outfielder
Adam Knueve, outfielder Kyle Vorst,
6-2 pitcher/infielder Kyle Landin, 6-4,
215-pound and Austin Horstman (outfield-
er/first base), Randy Zeller (6-3 junior in-
fielder/pitcher), Dylan Hoffman (junior in-
fielder), junior outfielder Andrew Krouse,
sophomores Derrick Schimmoeller (out-
fielder), Blaine Warnimont (infielder),
Colton Farrell (infielder), Brent Hovest (in-
fielder/catcher), Trent Gerding (freshmen
pitcher/infielder), Brady Laudick (pitcher/
infielder), Austin Swift (pitcher/outfielder),
Trevor Maag (outfielder), Austin Klausing
(pitcher/infielder) and Drew Hovest (in-
fielder).
Adam Huber serves as varsity assis-
tant, while Joel Rampe is the junior varsity
coach, with Tyler Heitmeyer the assistant.

We look to have good leadership
from our upperclassman. We have
seven returning starters and seven
other letterwinners from last

Coble has built up a 30-42 mark in four seasons
at the LadyCat helm.
That includes last springs 11-10 mark (4-2
in the Putnam County League, good for 3rd) that
ended in the Division IV sectional finals.
Only three girls from that team are gone in
2013 with 11 letterwinners back so Coble
has plans for a few more wins in the upcoming

Back for another go-round for the Maroon

tokrax (junior second sacker), Nicole Recker
(sophomore infielder/outfielder) and part-timer
Makenna Vorst (sophomore third baseman).
We look to have good leadership from our
upperclassman. We have seven returning starters
and seven other letterwinners from last season,
which will give us lots of experience, Coble
noted. We have great depth at every
position this year, including pitching,
which will help us towards the end of
the season. We look to have strong bats
again this year and improve our team
batting average from our .327 last sea-
son.
Last seasons unit scored 129 runs,
stealing 124 bases.
Three letterwinners were lost from
last year, two due to graduation Eri-
ka Brinkman (Honorable-Mention) and
Devon Hundley; and one via injury suf-
fered during basketball: senior short-
stop Julia Vandemark (fourth year; 1st
Team PCL; .481 BA, 37 hits, 27 runs,
46 stolen bases).
With a big injury coming at the
end of basketball season to Vandemark,
we are looking for someone to fill in at
shortstop. We are looking forward to
new people stepping into our starting
lineup this year, Coble continued.
Also in the mix are senior Kseniya
Ivanova, sophomore Melissa Jorrey
(catcher/first base), sophomore Olivia
Schmenk (outfield/third base/pitcher),
sophomore outfielder Casey Wehri,
freshmen Paige Roller (second base/
outfield), Cortney Swift (pitcher/out-
field), Sam Nagy (pitcher/infield),
Sarah Hovest (infield) and Laine Lau-
dick (infield/outfield).
Our overall outlook is we look to
be very competitive this year in our
league and non-league games; we look
to advance further in tournament play
this season. The PCL will be very even
this year and we will be looking for
more wins this year, Coble added.
Assistant coaches are Sharon Lue-
brecht and Kelly Schnipke (JV Coach).
Kalida opens 2013 on Friday, April
5, at Miller City.
Members of the Kalida softball team (front row, from left) are Paige Roller, Sarah Hovest, Melissa Jorrey, Skylar Basinger,
Olivia Schmenk and Amy Smith. In the second row are Laine Laudick, Samantha Nagy, Nicole Recker, Katelyn Kortokrax
and Kseniya Ivanova. In the third row are Kelly Schnipke, assistant coach, Summer Holtkamp, Kaylyn Verhoff, Casey Wehri,
Makenna Vorst, Julia Vandemark and Whitney Smith. In the fourth row are Sherry Luebrecht, assistant coach, Mariah Doep-
ker, Kayla Siefker, Emily Schnipke, Andrea Bellman, Paige Wurth and Kelly Coble, head coach. (Delphos Herald/Charlie

Neck Bones
Headaches? Migraines?
Deep in your neck a pair of blood vessels (vertebral arteries)
pass through the openings in your neck bones. These vessels
supply 30% of your brains blood supply. Any twisting or mis-
alignment of your neck bones will kink those arteries and slow
the blood flow to your brain, (the start of a migraine). Dr. Reed,

Knight tracksters ready for strong spring
By BRIAN BASSETT
DHI Correspondent
[email protected]
CONVOY Crestview Knight boys track team went
27-18 last season in dual meets, with a fourth-place North-
west Conference finish and a fifth-place district finish.
The team returns 12 lettermen this season, including
five seniors.
Shelby Ripley (distance, long relays), Jared Long
(sprints, short relays), Josh Ream (throws), Joel Genter
(distance, long relays) and Zach Burdette (middle dis-
tance, middle relays) all return for their senior season in
2013.
Juniors Tanner Skelton (distance, hurdles) and
Copsey Bogle (hurdles, pole vault, short relays); and
sophomores Preston Zaleski (high jump, sprints), Malcolm
Oliver (jumps, sprints), Zack Jellison (sprints, short relays),
Mycah Grandstaff (distance) and Branden Clayton (middle
distance, distance); all return after earning varsity letters
last season.
The list of promising newcomers to the team in 2013
includes: juniors Scott Miller (throws), Michael Hansard
(sprints), Justin Gibston (middle distance, hurdles) and
Zen Burdette (throws); sophomores Charles Thornburg
(distance), Seth Moser (throws), Corban Grubb (throws)
and Andrew Burnett (middle distance); and freshmen
Sage Schaffner (sprints), Adam Saylor (distance), Isaiah
Kline (sprints), Jared Gibson (middle distance) and Carter
Brown (throws).
Overall, the boys team will feature 39 athletes, only
five of whom are seniors, and 24 freshmen.
Our boys team is young but many underclassmen
have been in key positions over the past one or two sea-
sons to compete in some big-time events and meets.
I believe that this team can experience some success if
they work together to develop chemistry among relays
and across events, said third-year Knight coach James
Lautzenheiser.
Overall, the team figures to be strong in the distance
areas, as many successful cross country runners have
come out again this spring.
Lautzenheiser pointed to Genter and Ripley as run-
ners to watch in the distances, along with Grandstaff in
the 3200-meter run. Justin and Jared Gibson and Branden
Clayton are also part of what Lautzenheiser said should be
a solid distance crew.
The Knight coach also expects Oliver to improve on
a successful 2012.
Malcolm Oliver is coming off a strong long jump sea-
son that saw him compete at the regional level. I look for
him to increase the length of his jump and hopefully can
get him to compete with the terrific jumpers from (confer-
ence rival LCC), he continued.
Lautzenheiser explained that the throws, sprints and
relays are in restocking mode, not rebuilding because the
team features very capable components. He continued
that it will come down to chemistry.
Hurdles will be the weakness of the team and the
coach added that pole vault could be a wild card with some
good athletes trying their hand.
I am excited to see if this group of Knights is ready
to turn adversity into opportunities for individual and team
successes, concluded Lautzenheiser.
On the girls side, the Lady Knights posted a 17-28-1
dual meet record in 2012 and took sixth place in the NWC.
Fortunately for the Lady Knights, 10 letterwinners re-
turn from that team and with 15 newcomers to the varsity
squad, there is optimism surrounding the 2013 season.
Returning letterwinners include: seniors Sydney
Waltmire (throws), Amanda Lobsiger (sprints, jumps)
and Darrian Hoerig (short relays, hurdles); junior Janelle
May (middle distance); and sophomores Bekka Tracey
(throws), Whitney Smart (sprints, short relays), Jamie
Moore (sprints, short relays), Paige Michael (jumps, short
relays, hurdles), Hali Finfrock (middle distance, long dis-
tance) and Monica Winhover (throws, middle distance).
The team will also benefit from a big group of young
newcomers, including: senior Darcci Swager (throws);
sophomores Courtney Trigg (hurdles, short relays, discus)
and Victoria Callow (sprints, short relays); and freshmen
Claire Zaleski (sprints, short relays, long jump), Alyssa
Walter (hurdles, pole vault, sprints), Meghan Sherman
(middle distance, long distance), Danielle Ray (hurdles,
shorts relays, sprints), Amanda Cole (sprints, short relays)
and Eden Allison (middle distance, long distance).
The girls team is comprised of 25 students, 18 of
whom are sophomores and freshmen. One benefit to that
is there are a lot of different avenues for our youth to fill
in toevents that have been heavily slated with recently-
graduated seniors over the past two seasons, Lautzen-
heiser noted.
Though the numbers arent ideal, Lautzenheiser ex-
pects a competitive squad.
Our program has been fortunate over the past four
seasons to have strong event elements, despite an ability
to match the same type of roster numbers that our boys
team usually provides each spring. I believe that despite
lower than usual numbers for our girls, well still be able to
secure some consistent events for the Van Wert County,
NWC and district (meets), he said.
We will need to learn to be dynamic with our girls
roster. We have a lot of talent, in small numbers, and we
need to work to put our student-athletes in the best possi-
ble place to be successful. This means more emphasis on
technique instead of merely maximizing event efficiency.
Overall, with a nice mix our youth and experience,
expect a talented group of girls to post a nice season at
Crestview.
We have been blessed with a lot of younger girls who
will work hard to emulate the lessons from our recently-
graduated seniors, as well as the current juniors and se-
niors on our team, Lautzenhsier added. I believe that our
roster contains a lot of athletic talent, which must be devel-
oped over the course of the season in order to put together
some solid events for the post season run.
Im excited to see this group of girls tackle the sea-
sons challenges that lay before them.
Assistant coaches are Sara Owens, Mary Alvarez,
Randy Grandstaff and Hannah Phlipot.
The season begins Saturday, March 30 for the girls at
the Versailles Invitational, while the boys begin Thursday,
April 4, at home versus Fort Recovery and Continental.

VAN WERT Charlie Witten has put together
a 15-year baseball coaching mark at Van Wert of
128-208, including 2012s 10-16 overall slate (3-6
in the Western Buckeye League; 7th) that ended
at the hands of Napoleon in the Division II sec-
tionals.
Eight lettermen are back to see if they can
make 2013 more successful for Witten.
They include fourth-year senior and WBL first-
teamer Joey Hurless (pitcher/outfield; .400 batting
average; 33 innings pitched, 6.45 ERA), fellow se-
niors Andrew Todd (pitcher/first base; 38 IPs 2.21
ERA; Honorable Mention), Mason Krugh (infield/
pitcher; .300; 19 IPs, 4.50 ERA), Terin Contreras
(third base/catcher; .200) and Jacob Hoverman
(outfield); juniors Nathan Stoller (shortstop-pitch-
er; .221, 14 IPs, 5.00 ERA) and Tyler Williams
(outfield/pitcher); and WBL third-teamer sopho-
more Brant Henry (pitcher/outfield; .333; 36 IPs,
4.28 ERA).
Our strengths include starting pitching we
have our top four pitchers returning from last year.
We also have speed Joey set a school record
with 27 stolen bases last year and several other
players are capable of stealing double-digit bases
this year, Witten continued.
Having to replace a graduated quartet of let-
termen in Matt Cucciarre (first base; .305), Vince
Moreland (second base; .299), Aaron McClellan
(catcher/outfield; .244) and Zach Wood (third
base/pitcher; .328), Witten will turn to newcom-
ers in juniors Kevin Agler (first base/pitcher), Ja-
cob Braun (third base/pitcher), Andrew Dingle
(outfield), Cody Keirns (infield) and Sean Miller
(catcher); and freshmen Ryan Stoller (catcher/
outfield) and Justice Tussing (infield).
We have a couple of question marks. One is
our defense we will need to improve defensively
to help out our pitching staff, Witten added. The
second is our pitchers need to be more efficient
with their pitches; those two are our keys to suc-
cess. Offensively, we return three hitters who had
solid years last year. We need to develop more
consistency with the rest of our lineup.
Our goals are to finish in the top half of the
WBL and have a winning season.
Jeremy Kitson is the volunteer assistant varsi-
ty coach, with junior varsity coaches Chris Covey
and Jim Werts.
Van Wert hosts Jefferson Saturday, March 30,
to open 2013.

VAN WERT Mitch Prices Van Wert boys tennis
team finished 6-7 last spring.
Three starters/lettermen are back on the hard
courts for 2013.
Jon Lisa, in his third varsity season; Luke Ste-
vens and Alex Baer are back for Price, who expects a
young team to show its stuff in 2013.
We have a very talented team this year and
should be exciting because of the young guns we
have, Price said. We are young but should be fun
to watch.
We aspire to be in the top four of the WBL but we
need to start strong.
He will especially look to promising newcomers
Lane Mansfield, Brandon Amstutz, Nick Etter, Kory
Schlatter and Eli Alvarez.
The Cougar netters commence 2013 on Thurs-
day, April 4, versus Wapakoneta.
