Lesson 2-2: Variables and Expressions

Learning Objectives
The learner will know how to use variables and evaluate algebraic expressions.

Common Core Standards

Write, read, and evaluate expressions in which letters stand for variables. Evaluate expressions at specific values for variables. Include expressions that arise from formulas used in real-world problems.

Prior Knowledge Needed

Oder of Operations The learner should know how to fill in a table

Vocabulary
Numerical Expression Variable Algebraic Expression

Preparation
Give each student a set of algebra tiles. The power point should be set up and ready to go at the beginning of class.

Agenda
Students enter and begin working on their Tuesday starter and take out their homework from the night before. During the daily starter, teacher circles the room checking the homework. Questions are answered concerning the homework. Lesson quiz is taken. Next lesson is given and the remaining time of class is for homework.

Lesson: Opener
Students take out algebra tiles and teacher explains what each tile shape represents. Teacher walks the students through the first expression and makes sure that the students are following along with their tiles. Draw algebra tiles to model the expression 2x + 3.

To check understand, the class does more examples. Students who represent the expression correctly with their algebra tiles show their work on the board.

3x + 5

x+7

The next thing that the students will work on is how to evaluate algebraic expressions.

Misconceptions
Students often believe that when x = 3, 8x turns into the number 83 rather than 24. Students have a tough time using a different variable than x since that is the most common variable used.

8x + 2 for x = 2. 1) Replace x with 3 2) Multiply 8 and 3 3) Add 24 and 2 The final example that students will work through together is a word problem. The cost to rent a canoe at the lake is a $6 basic fee plus $4 for each hour h the canoe is rented. The expression for the total cost of a canoe rental is 6 + 4h. Complete the table for the given number of hours.

The students will fill in a table for the values of 1, 2, and 3 for the variable h. Before working on the problem, it is important to go over where the expression came from. Why is the 4 being multiplied by the h? Why does it make sense to add 6? Once this problem is finished and worked through the students have the rest of the class period to work on homework.
