Completed Application

West Laurens Middle School is located in rural Laurens County, Georgia and serves students in grades 6-8. Many students come from low-income households and over 40% qualify for free or reduced lunch. Test scores are higher than state averages but the school library's collection of 12937 books is aging, with 13% in poor condition. The school wishes to purchase 500 new non-fiction books focused on social sciences, natural history, technology, geography and history for $12,500 to update the collection. They plan a family event to introduce the new materials and encourage greater library use.

A. TELL US ABOUT YOUR COMMUNITY

Tell us about the community in which your school is located. (Setting, economic conditions, and special circumstances are appropriate.)
Our Community can be described as part rural/part small urban. We are located in Laurens County, which is the third largest county according to land mass. Since the city is in the center of the county, the outlining towns are considered to be rural areas. Many of the students live in low socio-economic situations, in either single parent households or multi-family households.

B. TELL US ABOUT YOUR SCHOOL

1008 Number enrolled ______

Tell us about pertinent school challenges and achievements. (Evidence of outstanding service to children is appropriate.)
We have challenged our students to consistently do their best and perform well on standardized tests. Our students consistently score higher than the state average on most, if not all, of the sections of the CRCT and on the 8th Grade Middle School Writing Assessment. We have also had the highest score for an individual on the writing assessment.

Number of individual pre-K through 8th grade students that use the library at least once a week: 662 _________ individual students
(A number must be provided. It is important that this number accurately reflect the use of the library by individual children. Please estimate, as accurately as possible, the number of children that use your library in a weeks time. Do not count multiple visits as separate children.)

How many childrens books (books published for children pre-school through 8th grade) are in your 12937 collection? _______ (Do not include reference books, text books, or classroom collections.) In what condition are the childrens books? Provide percentages.
37 % Excellent (new and in good condition) ___

40 % Good (not new, but in good condition) ___

10 % Fair (well used, but not overly-deteriorated) ___
13 % Poor (significantly damaged, close to unusable)* ___

*If more than 10% of collection is in poor condition, provide explanation:

Many of our books are in poor condition due to the age of the books and due to the normal wear and tear that popular books go through.

What special programs does your library offer children to encourage reading and library use:
There are two separate items that are done to encourage reading amongst our students: 1)Each grade level sets Accelerated Reader requirements that students must meet each 9 weeks. This counts as part of their reading grade. In addition to receiving a grade, they are also rewarded each 9 weeks with a party. If they meet their goal all four 9 weeks, they receive a certificate at Honor's night. 2) We also encourage our students to read the books that have been selected as Georgia Book Award Nominees. If they read 10 out of the 20 books, they are rewarded with a day from school. We take the students to see a movie at the local movie theater, then take them to a local park and feed them hamburgers, chips, drinks, and a dessert. If the students read all 20 of the books, they receive a trophy at Honor's Night.

D. TELL US HOW LLCF GRANT FUNDS WILL BE USED

What type(s) of childrens books do you need?
We would purchase non-fiction books, within the subjects of: social sciences, natural sciences, technology, geography, and history.

How was this need determined?

This need was determined by running an analysis of our collection in Titlewave. This analysis showed that the above mentioned subject areas are furthest away from the recommended percentages.

How many childrens books are needed, at what total cost?

500 Number of books: _______
12500 $ _______

Total cost: How was this cost determined?

At approximately $25 a book, it would cost $12,500 to purchase 500 books.

What special plans (events, displays, publicity) do you have to use the acquisition of additional books to encourage greater library use and foster a love of reading?
A parent/student night of reading and activities would be planned to introduce the new books and their subject matter.
