Understanding music in relation to history and culture. Enduring Understanding and/or Essential Question: Freedom is the cornerstone of jazz. (EU) What is jazz? (EQ) Jazz musics character comes from the way in which one plays. (EU) How do musical techniques influence the feeling of the music? (EQ)
Instructional Objectives: The student will be able to apply appropriate jazz syllables to the melody and improvisation of a new jazz chart. Procedures 1. Listening: (5 minutes): Play recording of Cantaloupe Island by Herbie Hancock instructing students to listen for phrasing and style 2. Instruction (40 minutes): Jazz syllables will be addressed primarily through short explanation then singing a. A new jazz chart, Cantaloupe Island, will be distributed b. A brief explanation of jazz syllables will occur (doo, dit, dat) c. Students will sing Cantaloupe Island applying the correct jazz syllables d. Students will play Cantaloupe Island and take turns playing Example
Classroom Management/Democratic Practices Students will be almost constantly playing or singing during the rehearsal. This should help prevent any issues with students talking or playing out of turn. ASSESSMENT During the lesson Students will be assessed during the lesson through singing and playing solos for me and their fellow students. Feedback will be given by me. At the end of the lesson At the end of the lesson, students will be called upon individually to review the syllables of a made-up melody. I will see immediately if the students understand the material.
