Whittaker Elementary School is located in Orangeburg, SC. Whittaker houses 36 teachers and 615 students from Pre-k to 5th grade (based on information gathered from the 2011-2012 report card from the State Department of Education website). Of the 615 students, 311 are female, 304 are male, 580 are African American, 18 are Caucasian, and 17 are Hispanic. There are 85 4th grade students, and of those there are 41 females, 44 males, 82 African American students, 2 Hispanic students and 1 Caucasian student. The student teacher ratio for the school is 18.5:1. Whittaker was awarded the Palmetto Silver Award from the South Carolina Department of Education for student performance and growth. They have also met AYP or Adequate Yearly Progress for 5 consecutive years (2003-2007) and in both 2010 and 2011. In the 2011-2012 school year 98.8% of 4th grade students that were tested in ELA 84.4% either met or surpassed test score requirements (1.2% higher than 2010-2011 test scores). Whittaker is also an exemplary Title I school. It is one of the highest performing Title I schools in any given year, and has received accolades for its performance.
