SIMPLY PI SHAWL
Finished Size: Unblocked 50-55” diameter, blocked 65-70”

ABBREVIATIONS & SYMBOL CHART


Note: Beads are optional on this shawl. If you do not wish to use beads simply K1
instead of SBK1 or K1SB. If you use beads-it takes 60 beads to complete each round and
approximately 10 yards of yarn for each round. Thread 60 beads onto each 20 yard section of yarn.

#11 SBK1 or K1SB—slip bead, knit one or knit one, slip bead

#9 K – knit

#7 knit on right side rows

#5 K2 tog – Knit 2 stitches together

#3 YO – yarn over

#1 SSK – Slip 2 stitches separately as if to knit, then insert left needle into
front of 2 sts and knit the 2 stitches together

MATERIALS
Lace weight wool yarn, approximately 1800 yards
Set of 8” double-pointed needles and 16”, 24” and 36” circular needles
size 6 (4.00 mm) or size needed for gauge
Markers Pins for blocking
Size 8 seed beads--approximately 1600 (optional)

GAUGE: In Stockinette Stitch, 20 sts = 4”

Cast 9 sts loosely onto a double-pointed needle; distribute 3 sts onto each of 2 other
double-pointed needles: 3 sts each needle, 9 sts total.
Note: Place a safety pin at beginning of first cast on st to mark beginning of rnd. Begin
working in rounds, making sure that first rnd is not twisted.
Rnd 1: Knit across each needle.
Note: When working next rnd, do not forget to work YO at the end of each needle.
Rnd 2: (K1, YO) across each needle: 6 sts each needle, 18 sts total.
Rnds 3-5: Knit across each needle: 6 sts each needle.
Note: When working next rnd, do not forget to work YO at the end of each needle.
Rnd 6: (K1, YO) across each needle: 12 sts each needle, 36 sts total.
Rnds 7-12: Knit across each needle: 12 sts each needle.
Note: When working next rnd, do not forget to work YO at the end of each needle.
Rnd 13: (K1, YO) across each needle: 24 sts each needle, 72 sts total.
Rnds 14-19: Knit across each needle: 24 sts each needle.
M1 increases are made as follows: With right needle, pick up the strand between last
stitch knitted and next stitch from back of work. Place strand on left needle and knit
through back of stitch.
Rnd 20: (K12, M1, K12) across each needle: 25 sts each needle, 75 sts total.
Rnds 21-24: Knit across each needle: 25 sts each needle.
Note: At this point you should be able to replace the double-pointed needles with a 16”
circular needle. When working next rnd, place markers as indicated, making sure that
beginning marker is a different color to mark as beginning of rounds. Instructions will
now reflect that change by working around.
Rnd 25: Working stitches off of double-pointed needles onto 16” circular needle, knit
around, placing a marker after each section, use a different color to mark beginning of
round: 75 sts.
Rnd 26: (K1, YO) around: 150 sts.
Rnds 27-50: Knit 24 rounds.
Rnd 51: (K1, YO) around: 300 sts.
Rnds 52-99: Knit 48 rounds.
Rnd 100: (K1, YO) around: 600 sts.
Rnds 101-148: Knit 48 rounds.

LACE BORDER
Note: Beads are optional on this shawl. If you do not wish to use beads, simply K1
instead of SBK1 or K1SB. If you use beads-it takes 60 beads to complete each round and
approximately 10 yards of yarn for each round. Thread 60 beads onto each 20 yard section of yarn.
Rnd 1: (K2 tog, YO, SBK1, YO, SSK, K2 tog, YO, K1, YO, SSK) around.
Note: When knitting next round, make sure that bead stays to the right of center knit stitch.
Rnd 2: Knit around.
Rnd 3: (K2 tog, YO, K1, YO, SSK, K2 tog, YO, K1SB, YO, SSK) around.
Note: When knitting next round, make sure that bead stays to the left of center knit stitch.
Rnd 4: Knit around.

Rnds 5-48: Repeat Rnds 1-4 of Lace Border, 11 times more.

Rnds 1-4 of Lace Border


Repeat 12 times total

Rnd 49: (K2 tog, YO, SBK1, YO, SSK, YO) around: 720 sts total.

Chart Rnd 49 (last rnd)

Bind off all sts as follows: K2, slip left needle into front of the 2 sts on right needle,
knit these 2 sts together through back loop (K2 tog tbl), * K1, slip left needle into
front of the 2 sts on right needle, K2 tog tbl; repeat from * across.
Care and Blocking Instructions: Gently soak Shawl in water to thoroughly saturate.
Place on spin cycle in washer to remove excess water or wrap in towel and squeeze out
excess moisture. Pin out to blocked dimensions on a clean surface. Let dry overnight.
