Title: Recycled Collage Cuffs Description: Students will experiment with recycled materials to create wearable cardboard cuffs

Behavioral Objective/Essential Questions(s): How does art help people express themselves? What can you tell about a person from an art work they create? What are some good reasons to use recycled materials in an art work? How is collage different from drawing or painting? How can you implement repetition in your collage? (This lesson can be adapted to focus on texture, complimentary colors/schemes, foreign cultures, etc) Pennsylvania State Academic Standard(s): 9.1.A- Know and use the elements and principles of each art form to create works in the arts and humanities. Materials and/or Equipment: -Empty Paper Rolls (paper towel, toilet paper, wrapping paper) -Student-Friendly Magazines -Scissors -Mod Podge or thinned glue -Glue Brushes -Optional Bric a brac (ribbons, glitter, buttons) -Optional Paint Preparation: Collect and pre cut the cardboard rolls. Collect magazines. Mix up glue if making your own, and pour into small cups. Check supplies in general. Modifications for Individual Differences: Have pre-cut collage pieces. Have a helper for the gluing process or cutting process. Allow student to make their own artistic decisions.

Activities and Procedures: Anticipatory Set: Pass around a paper tube/roll and ask students what they think they could make with this. Listen to student thoughts and ideas. Ask for reasons as to why someone would want to reuse a piece of junk for art. Listen to feed back and focus conversation on reduce, reuse, recycle. Ask if anyone can define collage, and have it defined and put in the journals. Ask if anyone has made a collage by a raise of hands (pre-assess). Introduce the lesson. Lesson Sequence/Student Work Time: Gather students around and demonstrate the lesson: Explain materials, demonstrate proper gluing if necessary. Ask students to define repetition, show an example. Ask what ways can they apply repetition to their collaged cuff ( repeated shapes, colors, lines, textures) Emphasize covering the whole cuff. Send students back to their seats and pass out pre-cut cardboard cuffs. Allow one student from each table to retrieve: a scrap magazine bin, scissor caddy, glue cup, and glue brushes. Allow students to begin as they receive supplies. Remind students to keep in mind what principle of art?- Repetition. Go around tables and see how students are applying repetition, ask why they chose certain elements to express themselves. Make sure students are covering the whole surface. Have students cut a slit in their cuff when they are finished so that they are wearable.

Closure: Have students cleanup 5 minutes before class ends. Close with a discussion: Define collage. How did you use repetition? What images did you use to express yourself? What are some other recycled materials we could have used? What problems or challenges did you face? How did you overcome that challenge?

Evaluation/Reflection:

Journal Assignments: Choose 3 of the essential questions to answer. Sketch out another version of wearable recycle art. List the materials you would potentially use.
