EDEL453 Spring2013 BrittiniMROZEK Unit 1 Geography DAY 5

This lesson plan teaches third grade students about physical and man-made features. Students will work in groups to match picture cards of physical and man-made features to their definitions. They will then complete a worksheet to identify features in different places. The teacher will assess understanding through the worksheet and by observing the picture matching activity. The lesson aims to help students distinguish between natural physical features and human-made modifications to the land.

A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This social studies lesson is designed for grades 2-3 to learn about the physical and manmade features of the earth. This lesson uses picture matching to help explain the different kinds of features. B. Target Population: Grade Level: Third Grade Skill Level: Students at all skill levels Grouping: Whole group discussion, small group work, independent work for the worksheet C. Materials: Handout: look at a Place one for each student. Handout: physical and human made features one set for each group of 4-5 students. Paper, pencils Vocab Physical features- landforms and bodies of water Human-made features- modifications people have made to the land D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards o G6.3.1 Distinguish between physical (natural) and human (man-made) features.

Student-Friendly Standards G6.3.1 I can show you what is natural in the world and what is made by people.

E. Procedure: 1. Show the students a globe and ask them what things make up the Earths surface. Explain that the surface of our planet also has smaller pieces of land and bodies of water, they are called physical or natural features. Write physical features on the board and ask students to identify physical features. 2. Write human-made features on the board and explain that human features are modifications people have made to the land. List them. 3. Divide the students into groups of 4-5. Give each group an envelope containing picture cards and definitions. Work in groups to match the picture cards and definitions.

4. Once students are done with matching the pictures, students will complete the worksheet Looking at a Place. 5. CLOSURE: Review the terms physical and human-made features with the students. F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? I will use the Handout Looking at a Place to measure the students understanding. I will also use a formative assessment while going around the room and observing the students match their physical and human-made features cards. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. Students should be able to distinguish between physical (natural) and human (manmade) features. If students can fill out the Handout Looking at a Place correctly I will know they understand the differences between man-made and natural features.

G. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I think the overall lesson is pretty easy to teach. I can show lots of examples of human made features and physical features with pictures on the internet or in books. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? I think the students will find it easy to know what is man-made and not. I dont think that anything will really be challenging to teach. Some students might be confused that some lakes are man-made like the Hoover Damn but I can help explain these certain exceptions. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? I can use the song America the beautiful to describe all of the natural places on our Earth. The class can sing the song together and then make a picture book to the lyrics after. Students will draw out the places that are described in the song. 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? For students who dont grasp the concept we can take a look on the internet at man-made structures and natural features. Seeing real pictures might better help the student understand. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change?

The Handout look at the Place might not be challenging enough. I would find a worksheet that had more detail in the places where the students can pick out different features. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? The original plan I had for this lesson plan was to do the lesson I included in the Extend Lesson part. I realized it would take up too much time and didnt concentrate on both human and man-made structures; it concentrated more on the natural features. I decided that to cut down on timeI would take that part out of the lesson and just do the matching cards instead.

These would be the cards you print out and then would cut out for each group of students before putting in the envelope.
