Who is the author? To whom he is writing? John Mark Gentile Christians unfamiliar with Jewish culture Where does the event happen? Sea side (1), THE SEA OF GALILEE Is the place significant?
Any mention about other places
John Mark: Pauls companion & Peters co-worker. Peter is the one who provided necessary information to Mark. He was helper to Barnabas and Paul in Pauls first missionary journey.
Written in Rome
Sea of Galilee is mentioned in the Bible under three other names. (1.) In the Old Testament it is called the "sea of Chinnereth" (Num. 34:11; Josh. 12:3; 13:27), as is supposed from its harp-like shape. (2). The "lake of Gennesareth" once by Luke (5:1), from the flat district lying on its west coast. (3.) John (6:1; 21:1) calls it the "sea of Tiberias" (q.v.). The modern Arabs retain this name, Bahr Tabariyeh. This lake is 12 1/2 miles long, and from 4 to 7 1/2 broad. Its surface is 682 feet below the level of the Mediterranean. Its depth is from 80 to 160 feet. This sea is chiefly of interest as associated with the public ministry of our Lord. Capernaum, "his own city" (Matt. 9:1), stood on its shores. From among the fishermen who plied their calling on its waters he chose Peter and his brother Andrew, and James and John, to be disciples, and sent them forth to be "fishers of men" (Matt. 4:18,22; Mark 1:16-20; Luke 5: 1-11). He stilled its tempest, saying to the storm that swept over it, "Peace, be still" (Matt. 8:2327; Mark 7:31-35); and here also he showed himself after his resurrection to his disciples (John 21). To such sudden squalls the Sea of Galilee is very liable from its position, in a deep basin, skirted on the east by lofty mountain ranges, while on the west the hills are intersected by narrow gorges through which the wind sweeps across the lake, and raises its waters with great rapidity into a storm. So storm are very common here.

the wind, and there was a great calm. Mark 4:40 He rebukes disciples for having no faith. Mark 4:41 Disciples were afraid at this
This phrase expresses Gods divine nature. This phrase is uttered to wind "and the raging of the water" (Lu 8:24) to calm itself. At the words of Jesus the wind and water were silenced. This word is like the order of a master to its servants.
Why are you so afraid? There is a natural anxiety under danger. But there was unbelief in their fear (we are dying). This rebuke is given only after making the situation calm. He did not scold them in the beginning itself. He saves them from the current situation and then does teach/rebuke them. how is it that ye have no faith: When we look at v35 we see that the journey is initiated by Jesus. Disciples might have got enough teaching about faith. For instance in Mat 8: 1-13 (This incident occurs before the calming of sea incident in both Mat & Lk) we find Jesus commending the centurion for his faith. Also they have seen many miracles (may not be that related to nature). Disciples are supposed to have belief in Jesus whatever the situation may be. The journey is initiated by Jesus Himself. So the responsibility to take care of them is also His.
What does the prominent figure say/do? What is said about him?
Sayings of Jesus: Mark 4:35 Lets go over to the other side." Mark 4:39 Peace! Be still! Mark 4:40 Why are you so afraid? How is it that you have no faith?" Actions of Jesus: Mark 4:36 Leaves the multitude Mark 4:38 Jesus sleeps Mark 4:39 He awoke, and rebuked and calmed the wind Sayings of Disciples: Mark 4:38 Teacher, dont you care that we are dying? Mark 4:41 Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him? Actions of disciples Mark 4:36 Obeying Jesus they took him with them in the boat to other side Mark 4:38 they woke Jesus Mark 4:39
Asleep on a cushioneither a place in the vessel made to receive the head, or a cushion for the head to rest on. It was evening and after the exhaustion of a busy day of teaching He sinks into a deep sleep. The tempest raging around and tossing the little boat did not disturb Jesus sleep. This shows Jesus humanity.
Teacher, dont you care that we are dying? They wake Jesus saying this may be on many terms. They may be waking Him as the one who initiated the journey. Or they may be waking Him expecting some miracle. It may be also possible that they wake Him just for the sake He is sleeping and they were struggling. The word we may include Jesus also. Also they were amazed in the end when they saw nature obeying Jesus words. This shows

that they did not have belief that Jesus will calm the storm. Jesus rebuking them for having no faith makes this point more strong. Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him? Disciples did not know Jesus fully. Rather throughout Jesus stay with them they were learning about Him gradually. Here they get a new revelation about Jesus. In v38 they reffered Him to be a teacher. But they find Him more than a teacher. They, having Jewish background knew that God the almighty had this power to calm the storm. In Ps 89:9, we read, 'Thou rulest the raging of the sea: when the waves thereof arise, Thou stillest them!' and in Ps 93:4 we read'The Lord on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, yea, than the mighty waves of the sea!'. This might have been familiar to them. But they are seeing Him as One of their own flesh and blood who is travelling with them. Understanding the divinity of Jesus they feared greatly.

Its primary idea is trust. A thing is true, and therefore worthy of trust. Faith is the result of teaching (Rom. 10:14-17).Faith includes our act our will. Faith without action is vain. We should be ready to exercise faith in every situation, whether it is conducive or not. The one having faith will be able to see God above the problem. We should not have doubt in our heart when we have faith (Mk 11:22-24)

In this passage the writer wants to highlight the Divinity and Humanity of Jesus. More than that in this passage we find Jwsus teaching lesson about faith to disciples. As is the theme, faith in stormy situation is expected from a disciple.
