Cherokee Indians Social Studies Lesson Plan

B. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This history lesson plan is designed for 3rd grade students to learn about the Cherokee Indians culture and their living conditions. The information for this lesson was found on the Internet and in a text book. C. E. Objectives: NV State Social Studies Standard G6.3.3- Identify ways people express their culture. Student Friendly Standard I can learn how other communities expressed their culture. F. Procedure: 1. Explain: First I will explain that we will be learning about the Cherokee Indians and their culture. Call students attention to pages 46-60 in their textbook. Identify & discuss the Cherokee tribe and their contributions to Native American culture. Introduce key words that will be used in the reading. 2. As a class we will read pages 46-52, stopping to discuss important points and answer questions along the way. 3. Students should be following along while reading and taking notes in their journals. They will be required to list 5 interesting facts they learned from the reading. 4. Next we will do the Star Quilt activity. I will show students pictures of authentic made star quilts on the overhead. Then I will instruct the students to use the colored construction paper to create their own star quilt. After the students complete the

activity we will use glue to connect all of the individual quilts together and create a large class quilt. 5. Ask questions as an ongoing check for understanding Focus on these questions: What kind of environment did the Cherokee Indians live in? What were the tribes main sources of food? What kind of shelter did they live in and why? Did they stay in one place or did they travel and why? 6. Closure: Discuss key characteristics of the Cherokee Indians. I will review the information learned and assess whether the class grasped the information G. Assessment: To assess the students understanding I will have them journal about the lesson. They will have to write their entry in the perspective of a Cherokee Indian. They must include four things we learned about their daily lives. For example, what they would eat, what type of work they did, what their houses were like and their traveling habits. I will know whether the students understand the concepts taught by observing them while doing the lesson and by what I read in their journals. This piece measures students understanding because the students have free reign to create the life of a Cherokee Indian based on the information learned.
