Overview

Project 2

March 7th

In this assignment, you will learn how to present an important community issue to an authoritative body and propose an appealing solution with consideration to budget and staff limitations. We will practice elements of design and work together on formal presentation etiquette. The skills you learn in this assignment prepare you for future presentations in both academia and your future careers. There are two parts to this assignment: an outline of the presentation and the PowerPoint. The entire assignment is worth 200 points.

Draft Deadlines
The Rough Draft is due in the Blackboard Project 2 Drop Box on Thursday, March 7th. Your Peer Review will be held in class on Tuesday, March 12th. The Second Draft is due in the Blackboard Project 2 Peer Review Drop Box on Friday, March 15th.

Instruction
Part I You will write an outline detailing the main claim and supporting evidence of your presentation. It consists of two main points: your topic and your solution. Your topic should be well defined with at least three points explaining why its a problem for the entire campus and why SGA should be concerned. You will write three instances supporting each of your points. Your solution will be structured similarly with school budget and staff capabilities in mind. You will cite the sources of your research. The outline must contain a minimum of 250 words. The outline is worth 100 points: 50 for the rough draft 50 for the final. Part II Your PowerPoint demonstrates visual cues of your presentation. PowerPoints should briefly summarize the points youre presenting to your audience. You cannot write every single outline bullet in your PowerPoint. Its boring to watch a speaker read off the projector screen. This presentation must contain a graph based on the numbers you research for your topic and solution. We will discuss graphs in class. The PowerPoint must contain a minimum of 16 slides including a Works Cited, Reference, or Bibliography page. The PowerPoint is worth 100 points: 50 for the rough draft and 50 for the final draft.

Audience
Your audience for this assignment is the University of Arkansas at Little Rock Student Government Association. The SGA works with students and university administration to resolve the concerns and meet the demands of campus life. Be sure to research their UALR page to gain some insight. These presentations are informative and require a more formal tone. Own your topic and your solution. Convince the SGA you have commenced enough research to hold authority over the presentation. Make it appealing and interesting. Keep the design clean and simple with a creative flair. This will separate you from other potential topic proposals competing for the fiscal budget.

Required
We are going to work on the presentations in Microsoft PowerPoint and the outlines in Microsoft Word. Every computer on this campus has access to this technology. Be sure to back-up your materials on a flash drive or a sync cloud. Pay special attention to Chapters 6 and the citation information in Rules for Writers. The first is Writing to Inform. Your presentations are informing the SGA of an issue and a solution. The second is MLA/APA style guides for citing sources. We are going to examine PowerPoints and presentations in class.

Submission
Submit the first draft in the Blackboard Project 2 drop box on Thursday, March 7th and the second draft in the Blackboard Project 2 Peer Review draft drop box on Friday March 15th. Bring a hard copy of the outline and an electronic copy of the PowerPoint (either on a flash drive or in your email) on Tuesday, March 12th. Label your files correctly. To label the file click Save As and name the file as presented below: Initials_19_P2_D1 rnh_19_p2_d1 This helps me organize the submissions. Misnamed files will lose grade points. You may submit the assignment in .pdf format to preserve your design elements. We will go over the steps in class to convert a Microsoft Word or PowerPoint document into .pdf format. Submit both drafts in the appropriate pages in your Google Site portfolio. This knocks out half your work for the end of the semester and opens it to free revision.
