My New Bag
by Nadine Zawacki
When we lived in Washington our church hosted a weekend conference. After a session late at night, the handle to my handbag broke. I was annoyed because I wasnt sure when I would get the opportunity to buy another one. I love variety in many areas of life, except my handbag. I get the same color or style every time. Its either black or brown (if Im feeling a bit adventurous), with two main compartments and a pocket for my cellphone. Tom and I made a quick stop at Wal-Mart. While there I asked him if he wouldnt mind me looking at the handbags. He was kind enough to humor me. I made a beeline for the same exact style and color bag I had at the time. My dear hubby came over to me and said, I believe God has a new bag for you. At that point I wanted to cry. I just didnt have the brainpower to think, much less try to hear God. I was exhausted from lack of sleep and the business of the weekend. He saw the frustration I felt. He went on to say, I think its red and God will speak to you through it. Is he nuts? Does he not know his wife? Red is not black or brown. I figured Id give it a shot. So I looked around and found a red bag. Its something I never would have bought for myself. Its pretty but Im not that bold in the bag department. I didnt sense any great revelation about it but bought it anyway. I took my new bag home and as I started to transfer the stuff from my old bag into the new bag. I felt Gods presence. I took some time to pray and when I looked at my new bag this is what God spoke to me Its a one-zipper bag instead of two because my role will be more defined. There was a snakeskin pattern on it. A snake sheds its skin and there was a new one underneath Gods shedding my old nature and a new one was waiting underneath. Its like new wine skin for the new wine He had for me. The red represented passion for Him and for the life that I once had. It also stood for His blood that was shed for me to have that new life and have it abundantly. The bag was bigger than what I usually get because the new thing was bigger than what Im used to. I felt He told me that passion, freedom and hope was mine that was His promise to me.That I would have renewed passion in my love for Him, my love for Tom, my love for my children and my love for His people. I would have freedom to express myself in the call He had placed on my life freedom to worship Him, to love Him, to be creative and be one with Tom. I would have hope that these are not mere words on a page but a promise. So, thank you Lord for your encouragement to me today. I will look upon my bag daily and be reminded of your love and promise for me.
