United Airlines Flight 93 took off from Newark Liberty International Airport at 8:42 AM on September 11, 2001. It checked in with air traffic control and was transferred between sectors as it flew across Pennsylvania. At 9:33 AM, an air traffic controller heard a transmission that included what sounded like a mention of a bomb on board. The plane's transponder was turned off at 9:40 AM. At 10:03 AM, an air traffic controller reported losing the primary radar return from Flight 93. Witnesses on the ground observed smoke and flames coming from a crash site near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
