History of QuickTime Before the advent of QuickTime, during the early 90s only specialized computers designed with dedicated playback hardware could only play color video. QuickTime can be downloaded standalone or can be obtained bundled with Apple iTunes and Safari. QuickTime Alternative is a software application and codec pack that enables the playback of .mov files on the windows platform. It is not officially licenced by apple and is installed with some additional browser plugins. VideoLAN VLC Player is also capable of playing most QuickTime files with occasional problems as it uses its own set of freeware codec libraries to decode the video.
