Ken grew up in Kansas City, Missouri, and Sandy in Esther (now part of Park Hills), Missouri. They both came to Rolla to attend the University of Missouri -Rolla. Ken graduated in 1979 with a BS, & in 1982 with an MS, in Mechanical Engineering. Sandy graduated in 1982 with a BS in Computer Science. While they knew each other slightly in college, they really met in the summer of 1990, when Sandy was a secretary in the Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Department at the university, where Ken was working. They began dating in January of 1991, and were married in June of that year. Ken still works at MS&T in the Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Department, and has been full-time since 1980. He teaches one class, supervises the technical staff in the machine shop and electronics shop, oversees instructional labs and facilities, and works with budgeting and purchasing.

Furnace Room Prayer How Long Was a Day in Genesis? Celebrate America
VBS & camps Youth to National Fine Arts Finding Favour concert 33 Mile concert
June
How long did it take God to create the earth and the heavens? Many people believe the days of creation were six literal 24-hour days. Others believe they were long, indefinite periods of time and that God took millions of years to create. Which one was it? The key word here is day. And the key question is, How long was a day in Genesis 1? Many words have more than one meaning. Day can have one or more meanings depending on the context. It can mean a literal 24-hour period of time, or the daylight portion of the day as contrasted with night, or a generalized period of time (in the Day of the Lord). What about the days of creation? Were they literal 24-hour days, or did they mean long, indefinite periods of time? Where do we go for answers? We always look first to the Word of God. Remember that the Old Testament was written in Hebrew, so lets examine the context of how the word day was used elsewhere in the Old Testament. Perhaps this will give us a clue as to what God intended in Genesis 1. The Hebrew word for day is yom. Outside of Genesis 1, yom is used over 350 times with an ordinal number (first, second, third). In each case it means a literal 24-hour day. Why would God mean anything different in Genesis 1? Lets look at another example. When yom is used with evening and morning outside of Genesis 1 (23 times), it always means a literal 24-hour day. Again, why would Genesis 1 be any different? Genesis 1:5 reads, And there was evening, and there was morning the first day. Genesis 1:8 And there was evening, and there was morning the second day. Genesis 1:13 And there was evening, and there was morningthe third day. (See verses 19, 23 and 31 for the fourth, fifth and sixth days.) Do you see a pattern here? For each of the six days of creation, God made sure that the word yom was associated with evening and morning and a number so we would know He was speaking of a literal 24-hour day. There are other Hebrew words for long periods of time, but these were not used in Genesis 1. Why is all this important? Well address that in future articles.

A favorite message concerning the importance of prayer in the ministry of the Great Charles Haddon Spurgeon has made its way into many circles. Spurgeon was known as the prince of preachers but also as a man convinced of the power of prayer. It has been said that there were some college students visiting London, who came to hear Spurgeon preach. While waiting for the doors to open, Spurgeon came to them incognito, asking if they would like to see the heating plant of the church. Because it was a hot July day, they sought to dismiss this man who wanted to show them the boiler room. But they didn't want to offend him, so they took the tour. Down the stairs and beneath the main floor where all the preaching took place they entered a room that wasnt a real boiler room, but a room filled with people praying. It was then that Spurgeon introduced himself and spoke of the importance of prayer. The furnace room in a building is generally a room that houses the source of heat. Furnace Room Prayer at First Assembly derived its name from this idea, believing that the power of prayer can increase the spiritual climate in a place. Teams have been
meeting now for about a year praying during the services, lifting up the pastor, the ministries and the congregation. Those who pray will do so about every 5 weeks. Some will pray during their normal Sunday school time and not attend Sunday school on that Sunday. Others will attend worship, and leave after that to pray. The only requirement to be a part of Furnace Room Prayer is to have a relationship with Jesus Christ and a desire to seek Him in that hour of prayer. You dont have to pray eloquently. Nor do you have to pray out loud. You only need to come with a heart that says, Lord, teach me to pray today. Program: Amazing Moms For: single mothers Contact: Rose Skyles or Cathy Skyles
Amazing Moms is a ministry based on scriptures and the power of positive thinking for single moms and their unique parenting issues. They meet every Sunday morning at 10:45, and have several events through the year.
