Furniture Design Project

Class, its time to get creative! Is there something you want or feel is missing in your home? Design it. For this project I am asking you to dig deep into your imagination to create a piece of furniture that (1) reflects your personality and (2) is something that you think is necessary in a home. This does not restrict you from inventing your own type of furniture that you feel people could benefit from owning. Students will draw their desired furniture with proper dimensions and create perspective in their drawing by using color/s of their choice. After you have drawn out your piece of furniture, write a one-page description of your furniture including the inspiration of your piece, how you chose the dimensions, and the materials you would use to make your design. Be ready to present your masterpiece in class on Monday! Have fun!

Claire Greenlee FACS 381 Assessment Philosophy

I researched several philosophies pertaining to assessment and rather than follow a definition and guideline of assessment, I feel like mine is a combination of multiple philosophies. In order to truly assess what you have taught and what the students have learned, teachers should be eccentric in their ways of teaching and assessments. Use your objectives as you would in authentic assessment but do not always teach towards a test and explore other creative options. There are so many resources that I have already found in my research to help fuel creativity which makes creating lessons fun as well as challenging. I want my students to come into class and never be able to predict what things I might have up my sleeve. With that said, I do want to follow curriculum in order for the students to succeed and have focus but that does not necessarily mean regular discussion boards, quizzes, and projects. I believe that students learn through interaction and socialization more than anything and as a teacher I want to be that provider of opportunity. I have been fortunate to have had positive and negative experiences with student and teacher relationships so that I could learn what makes a good teacher and what kind of teacher I dont want to be. Assessments should not be consistently in the form of papers and scantrons because not all people have that type of intellect and are suffering from that type of assessment. In order to be fair and an effective teacher, I must work harder to create a range of assessments that exemplify the strengths and learning of my students.
