What is an EASA Part-66 B Licence?
From 28 September 2006, for aircraft above 5700 kg, and 28 September 2008 for all aircraft, the only Licence acceptable for use in Europe for signing an aircrafts Certificates of Release to Service will be the EASA Part-66 Licence. The EASA B Licence comes in several categories depending on the aircraft type and equipment fitted. An EASA Part-66 B Licence is valid throughout the EU and those countries still affiliated with the Joint Aviation Authorities (JAA). In addition, many other countries around the world recognise the Part-66 Licence or have their own version of it. Currently, 30% of UK Licensed Engineers work overseas, where their experience and qualifications are in great demand.

About the course

The University of Glamorgan and the International Centre for Aerospace Training (Cardiff and Vale College, situated at Cardiff Airport) jointly offer this innovative Part-66 B Licence and Honours Degree programme. In order to gain a Part-66 B Licence you will need a minimum of 5 years experience within a Part-145 organisation, but this may be supplemented by a recognised apprenticeship or military service, at the discretion of EASA. This course has been designed to be flexible and so has been broken down into four (4) stages, with the Part-66 elements making up the first three (3) stages. Once you have completed a stage you will be able to move onto the next one when you feel ready, allowing you to advance through the programme at your own pace. In addition, there is no fixed start date to your studies, allowing you to join the programme at any time. All this without breaking your work schedule. You would be expected to complete 80 credits at stages 1 to 3 and 120 credits at stage 4. As a guide, each credit should take you about 10 hours of study time to achieve.

What will I study?

At Stages 1 to 3 the modules you study will vary slightly depending on the type of B licence that you are aiming for. All B licences cover the 10 core modules: 1. Maths 2. Physics 3. Electrical Fundamentals 4. Electronic Fundamentals 5.  Digital Techniques/Electronic Instrument Displays 6. Materials & Hardware 7. Maintenance Practice 8. Basic Aerodynamics 9. Human Factors 10. Aviation Legislation The remaining 2 or 3 modules will be specific to the Licence category you wish to take. Each module consists of a Part-66 Examination and a University assignment element. Personal Development Plan* 3. Management & Sustainability 4. Management 5. Project Management 6. Project (Can be work based) * Students may be exempt these modules if they can demonstrate prior learning These modules have 2 associated examinations and 12 assignments.

What is an EASA Part-66 C Licence?

With this programmes BSc (Hons) element, you will meet the academic qualification requirement for an EASA Part-66 C Licence. This Licence is required in large Part-145 Maintenance Organisations where multiple Licensed Engineers work on aircraft. It allows the holder to sign off the aircrafts final Certificate of Release to Service after a significant period of maintenance. With a BSc (Hons) Degree, the experience requirement for this Licence is reduced by several years.

Who should join this course?

This course is designed for civilian aircraft mechanics and technicians, HM Forces personnel with 1st or 2nd line experience and other engineers or technicians with a recognised apprenticeship intending to move into the industry. This course is not suitable for those with no practical experience.

HM Forces Aircraft Technicians

A range of online resources have been created to aid your examination preparation. Study Plans are available to help you plan your study in preparation for Revision Tutorials. Expert tutors are available to answer any queries you may have regarding the material that you are studying. Practice Questions on each topic help you consolidate each area and Progress Indicators allow you to test yourself against the clock. The programme provides the opportunity to visit our modern facilities for Revision Tutorials before sitting your Part-66 examinations. The classroom based revision tutorials held at ICAT are designed to boost your knowledge in the days prior to an examination. Expert tutors reinforce your learning, resolve problems and to help you prepare for the exam. Planning your studies and attending the revision tutorials will maximise your chances of success in each module, whilst keeping stresses of studying and examinations to a minimum. As ICAT has Part-147 Approval, examinations are set and marked in house, but you can sit examinations at any Part-147 centre. Part-66 examinations have a 75% pass mark. The number of questions will vary from module to module, but each examination will consist of a multiple choice paper where each question has three possible answers. Three modules will also have additional essay papers. Certificates will be issued on successful completion of each examination. The University Assignments have a pass mark of 40% and will be based around the module that you are studying. You will be expected to research outside the Part-66 syllabus to gain high marks, which will then determine your degree classification. From the start, you will be put in touch with an allocated course tutor, as a dedicated point of contact to offer guidance and support. Learning material will be provided in textbook and online formats. Textbooks are full colour; whilst the specially developed online learning interface allows quick and easy navigation within the module and include interactive diagrams. For regular feedback, each module contains Self Assessment Questions (SAQs). You can set your own timetable, but it doesnt mean that you are alone.
