Teachers Professionalism in Teaching

Teachers professionalism is a crucial component as one important parts in education. Professionalism is important for teacher because it can control outcomes of students. However, students learn many things from their teacher and teacher is a role model and example for their students. A good teacher is not only they who have good knowledge and good in teaching inside the class, but also they who can build students character by showing good behavior as role model for students. Consequently, to create good students for next generation and next leader, Indonesia must create professional teacher first. The teachers professionalism in teaching is indicated by their role model include their behavior, have academic qualification showed by university certificate, and also their teaching performanceas quality of teacher. The first aspect is role model. Role model is important as a teacher especially teacher of elementary school and junior high school. However, students of elementary and junior high school need it for build their character because they will follow some behaviors even habitual of their teachers as their parents in school. They learn many things in this age, it is not only knowledge, but also attitude. As an example, if their teacher always come late, then they will think that being punctual is not important. Then, the very bad effect is Indonesia will always lack of punctual person because Jam Karet will always stand as our culture which be heired from one to the next generation. Based on data from some junior high school students in Gorontalo, it is about 75,7% students stated that their teacher do not come on time to the class. The second is teacher qualification. Based on UU No.14 year 2005 in (Guza: 2008) about teacher and lecturer: Pasal 2 ayat 1 : professional teacher means that teaching is only done by people who have qualification in academic, competence and teacher certificate as a

requirements for every level of education. Teacher must have certificate of university first before they come in real class and teach their students. In fact, many teachers teach their students before they have certificate. Muhammad Zuhdan as education observer in Indonesia stated that, Indonesia has 2,92teachers, and 1,44 of them have not gotten education in Strata 1 (S-1) yet. It equals with 49,3% of teachersfrom total numbers of teachers Indonesia (kampus.okezone.com) The third is teachers quality. Teachers quality have relation with teacher competence. Teachers have to know how to control their class, using appropriate method in teaching and even using games or humor to avoid students boredom. Based on data collecting in Gorontalo, some of teachers (33,8%)teach by explaining the lesson from start until the class finish. In my point of view, it will be better for teacher to keep students interest by using games or humor to motivate students to learn, if students love to learn it is easy for teacher to achieve learning goal. So, to create Indonesia great generation in future, create good students by being good and professional teacher.
