Assignment #1
Issue date: 03-03-2008 Due date: 17-03-2008 Marks: 60 Question 1 The crank OB rotates at the constant angular speed 0 (Figure Q1). (a) Derive an expression for the velocity vA of the slider as a function of the crank angle [9]. (b) Plot vA against (in spreadsheet such MS Excel, Lotus 123 etc) and estimate the largest value of vA and the corresponding value of [6].

Figure Q1. Question 2 The Geneva wheel is a mechanism for producing intermittent rotation (Figure Q2). Pin P is the integral unit of wheel A and locking plate B engages the radial slots in wheel C thus turning wheel C one-fourth of a revolution for each revolution of the pin. At the engagement position shown, = 45 . (a) For a constant angular velocity 1 = 2 rad/s of wheel A, determine (by absolute velocity principles) the corresponding CCW angular velocity 2 of wheel C for = 20 . (Note that the motion during engagement is governed by the geometry of triangle O1O2P with changing ) [9]. (b) By relative motion principles determine the angular velocity 2 of wheel C for = 20 (1 = 2 rad/s) [8].

Figure Q2. Question 3 The motion of a roller A against its restraining spring is controlled by the downward motion of the plunger E (Figure Q3). For an interval of motion the velocity of E is v = 0.2 m/s. Determine the velocity of A when becomes 90 , using the instant centre approach [8].

Question 4
The elements of the mechanism for deployment of a spacecraft magnetometer boom are shown (Figure Q4). (a) Determine the angular velocity of the boom when the driving link OB crosses the yaxis with an angular velocity OB = 0.5 rad/s if tan = 4/3 at this instant. Express this angular velocity in vector notation [10]. (b) Determine the angular acceleration CA of the boom for this position when tan = 4/3 [10].
